I feel like each gen of RPGs has its ups and downs but if I had to choose, the SNES gen was probably peak design for RPGs. Nice graphics, decent length, a bit less grindy than the previous gen, and stories that usually arent too convoluted and long. This is coming from a someone who's not an RPG fan though, haha

Peak indeed. I’m more of a monster tamer type of fan though given the SMT love. Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy are great but I love having a huge party to whittle down based on personal preference and power.

Personally no but I have watched a lot of Ni No Kuni 2 played through. Have you?

@@Majora_T I started it but never finished. It's like real-time pokemon where you need to control three trainers at once. It was a bit too much for me. From what i can tell it's pretty different from the second game.

@@Majora_T I don't think it's a matter of modern JRPGs "doing it better", the reasons to enjoy classic JRPGs compared modern ones are very different, so I don't find the comparison altogether too productive, at least within this specific framework.

Not really. I play a modern JRPG looking for that same sense of adventure, exploration and fulfilling grinding. Some deliver, many don’t. In that respect, I personally find that modern JRPGs miss the mark.

Not gonna lie Sounds like you didn't want linear rpgs you want dungeon crawler or open world games as a ton of taking is inherently party of an rpg since the days of pen and paper. Like the moment the genre got the power to have a crap ton of story they did with SNES on consoles already.

Yes, somewhat. It’s not that I want 0 talking. I just want meaningful, concise conversation. Even SNES RPGs adhered to that principle.

I share a completely different perspective and is one of the reasons why I love modern RPGs and cannot stand those convoluted, boring, time wasting monotonous adventures known as classic RPGs. No story no character no thank you…. But I enjoyed your takes 🤣.

@@Majora_T Story, Combat, Exploration, Controls, Gameplay, Platforming, Level Design, Graphics, Voice Acting, Sound Design, …. Music is debatable but that’s about it 😂…. ( I’m sure I forgot some characteristics, oh well🤣).

Story when it’s done right can be great. I think of SMT4 or Fire Emblem Awakening. But those are so few and far between. When the story is too dull, it basically breaks the whole experience. That’s not a problem old RPGs need to worry about. Gameplay got better… to a point. I could see that argument working in favor of modern JRPGs. Where Id disagree is that the lengthy stories interfere with the engaging gameplay. Everything else are fine touches but it’s okay, we don’t need to share perspectives 👍

@@Majora_T great points, but I still stand on the side of modern RPGs, it’s actually good to share different perspectives as it makes for healthy debate, I mean sharing the same perspective would be boring …… kind of like classic RPGs 😂
