I think the biggest reason harley guys are getting a bad rap right now are all the Sons of Anarchy scene kids. Sure, it brought a lot of new riders in, but they didn't last long. Hell, we had one guy at work sell his after doing all these customization to it because " he couldn't ever find time to ride"... while I was riding to work every day.

A real biker worth his salt, cares less what anybody else rides. Those who do are insecure and driven by ego. A man and his bike have a relationship similar to marriage. Who cares if the next man likes blonds, burnettes, tall, short, plus sizes or slim? It's the inexperienced whom are defined by someone elses opinion. This is truth- solid gold wisdom.

My Brother just got his Motorrcycle a few weeks ago. Its a Black Yamaha and his helmet is like Yello white black (really ugly in my opinion and he seems to think that too) where we life you have to get full gear if you want to start youre practical lessons. So he bought his helmet before he got his driving licences and he didn't knew what kind of bike he would have. Im making my drivers licence right know and i have a Black helmet. So now he is alway taking mine insteat of his because mine fits better to his bike. And frankliy its pissing me off a little. Im only letting him take my helmet because i wouldn't be allowed to ride with him otherwise. New School riders are very mutch concerned with aesthetics.

As a new rider, i like the wave concept, but because i'm new, often times i'm not comfortable taking a hand off the handlebar to execute a wave. In most cases when those times happen, i will nod my head. I don't overthink the wave. Usually when I wave, I'm saying "Happy to see you on the road, be safe." I don't limit my waves to bikers, or bikers riding my favorite brand or style of bike, either. I've waved at 3-wheelers, amish buggies, old timey cars, and cars that have demonstrated a healthy respect for bikers. If i pass a biker who doesnt return my wave, i don't try to take it personally. I jyst assume the rider is busy shifting, or negotiating a rough patch of road, or going too fast to take their hand off the handle bars. By assigning a positive rather than a negative, i have a better riding experience and even if the rider made a concious decision not to wave because of some prejudice, chances are, im never going to see them on the road again anyway. Bottom line, spread the love, don't overthink/judge, be safe, and assume a positive.

Me, 1990, age 26. I was nearly broke and needed transportation. I had nothing and nothing to lose. I bought a beat-up, 8-year-old Magna V45 and rode that thing everywhere! Up coast, down coast, state to state, Mexico desert, in rain, shine, wind, dust, traffic, snow and through Death Valley on the 4th of July. I never rode with others. It was a lonely life, but I remember it as mostly positive. I was a young, self-taught, old-school rider, by your definition. My gear: Helmet, gloves, boots. Fast forward to 2021. I'm 57, married with kids, and have much to lose. It's been over two decades since I've ridden a motorcycle. I'm signed up with my 18-year-old daughter to take the MSF class later this month. I'm learning all this stuff on-line from Yammie and F9. Thinking of a dual sport and all the gear this time. Older people can learn.

He rode a Morgan: " Albert Ball, VC, DSO & Two Bars, MC (14 August 1896 - 7 May 1917) was an English fighter pilot during the First World War. At the time of his death he was the United Kingdom's leading flying ace, with 44 victories, and remained its fourth-highest scorer behind Edward Mannock, James McCudden, and George McElroy.[1] Born and raised in Nottingham, Ball joined the Sherwood Foresters at the outbreak of the First World War and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in October 1914. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) the following year, and gained his pilot's wings on 26 January 1916. Joining No. 13 Squadron RFC in France, he flew reconnaissance missions before being posted in May to No. 11 Squadron, a fighter unit. From then until his return to England on leave in October, he accrued many aerial victories, earning two Distinguished Service Orders and the Military Cross. He was the first ace to become a British national hero. After a period on home establishment, Ball was posted to No. 56 Squadron, which deployed to the Western Front in April 1917. He crashed to his death in a field in France on 7 May, sparking a wave of national mourning and posthumous recognition, which included the award of the Victoria Cross for his actions during his final tour of duty. The famous German flying ace Manfred von Richthofen, remarked upon hearing of Ball's death that he was "by far the best English flying man". "

Something important to note; When you see an "oldschool rider" don't immediately assume that they've ridden all of their lives and have vast experience and wisdom to share. More common today are guys in their 50's who began riding three years ago after the kids left home because it was something they'd always wanted to do. Another group are those that rode for a handful of years in their teens and early twenties then quit, only returning to bikes in three years ago aged 55. The negative and disparaging attitudes mentioned in this video will likely come from riders meeting either of the above descriptions as they seek to affirm their "bikerness" while wearing the traditional "biker" costume and riding their traditional "biker" motorcycle. The third group of "oldschool" riders are those of us who started young and have never stopped riding. Thus, having survived this long, we have very little to prove and (i would hope) are more likely to be friendly and helpful to new riders. Myself? 52yrs old currently riding a GSXR750 or VTR1000 subject to how I feel on the given day. I wave to everyone :)

Papa Yam, as always I love and enjoy your videos. One point I would respectfully disagree with you on is the point of trikes. I have nothing but 100% respect when I see some dude on a trike and crutches on the back. This means he somehow loves biking so much that even with what could be seen as a disability that he has made motorcycling work.

My newbie experience has been different. I wear full gear and a full face helmet. Whenever I talk with random "old school" bikers in their half helmets they all praise me for wearing full gear and then go on to tell me about all the stupid injuries they've gotten from not wearing full gear. However, like you said, they just accept it because they seem to be more concerned with the look then the safety. One thing that's great about the old school riders is they are a wealth of information about how to ride safe. They have all sorts of stories of accidents they've been in and tell me how to avoid those situations. I think in the end they are just happy to see a new generation taking up the mantle and keeping motorcycle riding alive.

Interesting take on attitude.I have been riding for over 20 years, all cruisers, last three have been Harleys. I do use channels like yours to help me improve my skill set as I have gotten older. The new skills help offset the slowdown (minimal :-) in my reaction time. Also, the "new" safety technology like riding gear with kevlar armor is nice and i use it.I REALLY love D3O. LOL I HAVE traded my harness boots and leather jacket for new gear.I still have them because I just cannot part with them, but they don't hold a candle, safety wise, to the new stuff.Plus, looking all armored up is groovy,in my opinion.I ride with guys who love their leather, and I get what you're saying, just know know that some of us dinosaurs do change with the times. :-) I put about 15-20 thousand miles a year on my bike as it is my daily driver and anything that helps keep me out of the skin graft ward is great.I enjoy your channel, keep up the good work

Hi Yammi, from watching your video there must be a difference in mindsets between US and UK riders (old and new). I am 56 and been riding since I was 16. For me the difference between ‘old’ and ‘new’ school riders, I went as far as becoming an Advanced Motorcycle Instructor and my friends laughed at me, I am still here a good few of my friends are not! Any way for me Old School looked out and acknowledged fellow riders an helped riders in trouble, it did not matter if you wore cuts or not. New school just get on with it while they blast up the tarmac. Ride Safe.

Just getting back into riding after a 20 years of no riding. It’s interesting to hear your perspective. I’ve been watching a lot of riding vids on KZbin and seen a lot of new school riders saying that your not a good rider if you don’t wear full riding gear and just talking a lot about what people are wearing while they ride in general. So from my perspective it’s the new school riders that are all about the image they project while riding. I don’t know where your from, but all riders wave to each other on the streets that I ride on.

Been ridin' Harley's most of my life. Had a Kaw Classic once, good bike but missed the Harley. The thing I've noticed more than anything else is the speed that the younger rider rides at. They don't cruise, they flat out ride hard, and they get into real bad accidents because of it. I noticed watching your video that you ride fast, nothing wrong with that unless the cager pulling out does not see you....I've laid a couple down over the years, always a low side slide, never a hard hit or over the bars. I guess the term "cruiser" fits the Harley crowd and the sport bikers live for the speed that their bikes can get them to.

Again, it’s a house divided in my home. My husband is an old school rider, Harley and all, while I’m a new school driver. When he came home with his bike, with having spent hundreds of dollars on gear, without a helmet I was blown away and obviously upset. He got me riding but I had researched to the max and went with keeping my beautiful face with a full face helmet. I’m in a unique position because not only did he support me in my Honda driving, new school mentality, but he also bought my gear for me. Also, despite being a Honda riding, helmet wearing, new schooler, his Harley pals still embrace me as their own. Maybe it’s just because I’m the wife that chooses to ride beside her husband instead of behind him. (Keep in mind that I’m 5 months older and we’re 22) I do have to say, though, that there was nowhere else I was going to get riding boots than Harley.

Ok. Where to start. 1, I am 77 and was able to ride for 55 of those years. I am as old school as you can get. I would still be riding if not some short circuit between my ears that makes me fall down; a lot. I started on a 50cc scooter and ended with a 1400cc Kawasaki. I found out at an early age that stepping off at 50mph hurts. I always bought the very best gear that I could afford. And I have a collection of broken helmets. My preferred style of ride was sport turing. And I found a lot of riders just like me over the years. A hell of a lot more than the type you showed as being old school. You know nothing. Those guys were old men, not old school. 2, I also learned that 2 wheels down is much better than 1 wheel up(New School). And that fucking around in traffic is a very good way of getting very bad things to happen (New School). You want to race(New School)? Take it to a track. Or are you afraid that a real rider wil hand your ass to you?

I have a 80s nighthawk 450 SC. It is kind of styled like a rocket but more like a sport cruiser. I love the fact that I can ride it leaning forward, back, or upright. It's versatile and I absolutely love it. I use to ride a suped up tomos moped. I came off it going about 40mph and I was extremely glad to be wearing a full face helmet. Ever since I have been a firm believer of the right gear. The same helmet saved my life twice. So it doesn't matter if it matches the bike or even remotely looks cool. It's full face all the way for me. Nothing beats a old 80s real leather jacket to block the wind. And I bet it would save a arm from road rash easily. I'm in the partial for looks primarily for function crowd. I don't care what people think as long as I enjoy my ride and get to keep riding another day.

I don't think I'm either old school nor new school rider,I think I'm somewhere in between. I'm 26 years old,and my bike is a European-made metric cruiser.I like all the cruiser bikes,American, European and Japanese-made,and I respect and appreciate all bikes for their intended purposes (I bought a cruiser because that's the type of bike I like the most, and I chose my bike specifically because it was very cheap and was in good shape for a bike that's over 20 years old).I also have friends who have,or have had in the past, various different bikes, from cruisers to sports bikes to naked bikes to dirt bikes to even scooters, and I wave to all bikers, from those on 50 cc bikes to those on a Boss Hoss, and even to scooter riders if I know the rider or if they wave at me first. As for the gear,it's a mix.I wear a matte black Nolan N104 flip up helmet, a Schott Perfecto-looking old school leather biker jacket, and also regular jeans, leather fingerless gloves and regular boots, but I do plan to get kevlar jeans with knee pads, and maybe better gloves and proper biker boots, when my financial situation improves. Wtf was this rant really about? You basically just segregated bike types. My experience since 1994 in Australia; New school rider: Wears matching leathers to bike, is now safe enough to do whatever speed he or she likes, knows everything about bikes and riding, refuses to wave to dissimilar riders. Old school rider: Knows from experience, doesnt have anything to prove, will wave to anyone except trikes and mopeds. Not bike specific. We were all young and stupid once, including myself. It's not the internet that causes this, it's simply new rider mentality, whether they ride race bike or cruiser, doesnt matter. After you've been riding long enough, you become old school because TIME causes this. Simple.

Guys (and girls) that typically weigh 100-130lbs but carry 100 lbs of gear and more concerned with acceleration and speed, but only gets to ride for an hour after work or few hours during the weekend, so they speed as much as possible.

Most of the new school dudes dont care about the riding of a bike, they just care about looking cool and getting some attention. Most of the old school dudes ride because they love sitting on a motorcycle and riding, not because attention or getting form point A-B

The club I belong to started in 1919. Not brand specific but there is a lot of Harley guys. A motorcycle safety course was offered to our members. They jumped at the chance. We had a lot of fun and learned from it.

Stopped today for a biker who needed help with his ride. Lucky i carry a basic set of tools around on my Kawasaki, so he could looses a screw here and there to at least drive home. He told me usually only old school riders stop for others, and i'm happy to break the mold.

I'm almost at 1/2 of my expiration date (i.e. almost 50), but I commute daily full gear + closed modular on a 800lb full dress K-bike and I'm not a shy rider either. I rarely get hand greets or nods back from V-twiners (some much younger than me), and almost always from "all others", almost makes me think the "V2's" don't like us. I advocate full gear always (including ear-plugs) and safety classes. I do my slow/narrow 8's, both ways U-turns and slalom practice every morning in the parking lot before I have my coffee. Every single day on the 11 mile stretch I encounter stupid canners/cagers that are endangering motorcyclists, but I feel much safer due to the practice and full gear on. And no, "just ride the bike" won't teach you everything. As my (Road King owning) bike instructor always says: every idiot can ride straight.

I don’t like to wave, I’m more focussed on the idiot beside me that usually turns into me without signalling or looking.
