Used to work on CV880's in the '70's. After a high power engine run up the tarmac behind each engine was coated with a layer of soot which clearly showed up mechanics footprints or vehicle tracks that passed over it. A great exercise in turning fuel into noise and smoke but with limited power!

In America you see this much more than in Europe or anywhere else in the world. The PW4000 is known for its smoke, but it is almost only seen this bad in the USA. Other planes that don't produce smoke also smoke in America. The N775UA has also been in Zurich and the smoke was not as massive there, even though it takes off with more power in Zurich. I think it also has something to do with the quality of the fuel.
