some of the critiques in this are very strange. like the levels. I get what you're trying to say that NSMB doesnt have many if any innovations on the formula, but we have to remember that the game is a side scroller. there isnt much that could be made without entirely changing the formula. and if that happened it just wouldnt be mario anymore. so rather than talking about what it adds cause honestly thats unimportant, what SHOULD be talked about is structure and design. how each level differs and feels unique and gives you a challenge. and in that department, NSMB series wins cause it always has unique interesting levels that never feel like they overlap. the level design is consistently different and the difficulty curve is always a steady pace. there are times the difficulty curve in the old mario games would be erratic and alot of levels from the old series tend to feel the same or overlap. not to mention yes yoshi was missing but they still had him in baby form with 3 unique ways to play that COULD carry over from stages. and while grab blocks arent really in the game specifically, there are tons of grabbable objects in the game that mario can throw even some other kinds of blocks. overall i think there is abit of misrepresentation with this video and i wanted to use that point about levels as an example. there should have been some better set rules for context, it really just kinda souns that other than bosses and moves. nsmb doesnt do anything as good or better, which just isnt true at all. there's more points i'd like to weigh in on too. innovations isnt the only thing that matters, whats most important is execution. and NSMB does that very well

ZeoLightning Many levels in NSMB are unique, but there are still many that are not. Also, ip even though they are unique, I still don't think the levels are designed as well as some in the, "old," Super Mario Bros. Not only were they better designed, but in each game they were also unique, such as the sunken ship in Super Mario World, or the tower you had to take to the clouds in Super Mario Bros. 3. Anyways, that's what I think...

Yeah, the first super Mario bros game had levels that were very similar. The first game had a level that was literally the same thing as 1-3 except there were Bullet Bills! I thing NSMB Is Better!

ZeoLightning There are ways to change up levels in sidescrollers. Donkey Kong Country Returns / Tropical Freeze and Rayman Origins / Legends are proof of that. But 2D Mario keeps it simple, which also has its charm.

I think his problem stems from the fact that he was essentially comparing NSMBDS to all the games that came before it, up until the bosses section. 1v6 is not a fair fight. IMO, NSMBU is basically the NSMB version of SMW, which did so much with the existing formula. If he were to compare just those two games, and how much they took and did differently from their respective subserieses, this might have been a fair fight.

Don't forget that NSMBWii added a ton of new moves as well as NSMBDS. The New Series has wall jumps, triple jumps, double jumps, crouch jumps, spin jumps, twirl jumps, ground pounds, super ground pounds, 4-player jumps, belly slides, shell slides, wall-sticking, wall-climbing, water walking, barrel-throwing, player-grabbing, and the list goes on. No new power-ups?! The New Soups have those in SPADES. And don't even get me started on the amazingly fun and challenging level design in these games. Star coins and hidden walls galore.

I think this video would have been better if it was an actual comparison. Why are the old games good, why are the new games good, why are the old bad, why are the new bad. Then compare the two. That would have been better than what you seem to be doing which is: why are the old games good? What have the new games added? You’re judging them on different scales and it seems kind of weird to compare them in this way.

This video really felt strawmaned. Like....from all your evolution of videos, it's already kinda clear you have a MAJOR bias for the original games being better than the new ones. I'm not saying the new games are better, cause even I'm not so sure, but it feels like you don't even try to give NSMB any credit here by just instantly going "they did a thing, but it wasn't interesting". At least go into detail on WHY the changes they made weren't interesting or something. It also felt almost desperate that in ONE category, you bring in the side series of Mario Land just to get things to a tie; just compare the 4.5 NSMB games with the 4.5 classic games, right now things stand in an even total, so it's a perfect comparison. End of the day I know this is still a super subjective topic, and I'm not here to dis your opinion, mostly just saying that the video itself felt kinda rushed and thoughtless, and your content is usually much better made than this, hence why you're still one of the only youtubers I always watch when you hit my sub box. Not meaning to come off rude or whatever, just trying to throw out some feedback.

I know, for example, sometimes, he'd use one NSMB game as inferior to one of the old games in some aspect, even though another in NSMB does have those improvements. For example, in powerups, the NSMB series introduces: The Ice flower, the Penguin Suit, the Propeller hat, the shell suit, the Gold flower, the Gold Coin box, the Super Giant Mushroom, the mini shroom, and the squirell suit. Not to mention, Yoshi variations were introduced and he dinged NSMB because they didn't appear as often as in World, even thouhg Yoshi was that games gimmick, so it'd be like complaining that the old games didn't have 4 player co-op

Why got the older games a point for the bosses? These bosses were goddamn easy! In the NSMB-series were so many challenging bosses and they had extrem good ideas with the bosses. Throughout the video you're looking only on Super Mario World and Super Mario Land 2. There were also bad decisions in the older games made.

The Ice Flower adds far more platforming potential than the Fire Flower. Especially introduced in NSMBWii, a game that innovated gameplay physics a lot, the moveset potential of ice balls is highly underrated. I prefer it to the Fire Flower.

I think it's obvious that he wanted the older games to win, so he tried to make the NSMB - Games to look bad on purpose. He even says NSMB has "a Ton of power ups", but gives the point to the older games. He says NSMB has the better bosses, but gives a point to both. This is a common problem in Wily's "vs" - videos. Even though I like the older ones better, that doesn't mean I agree with this video. Think about this for a minute. Just because the New games did things very similar to the older ones, does it really automatically mean that the originals are better? They actually tried to expand on everything the older games did and I think they did a good job on that. Each New game had much more variety in worlds than the older ones and a lot of the levels were very fun to play. There was a lot of secrets u can go find in the new games too, especially in NSMB2 which had a lot more secret levels than Super Mario World. As for powerups, a lot of powerups were added in the New games that could actually be used in levels. As for the old ones, at least in SMB3, a lot of them were simply used to effect the level select in some way and not the levels themselves. The other games cannot beat the amount of items that the New series had. Finally, for enemies, there was still a lot of more enemies in the New series that felt very fun to play. In the older games, they really didn't make new enemies, but they expanded on them instead. The new series wins on variety, so objectively, the new series wins without a doubt. The problem with this video is that u were very biased about it and that isn't how comparisons like this should work. U barely did research and u just picked what u liked better for most of them. But, just do u man. I'm not going to change how u do things. I'm just one person saying this.

Besides DS and Wii to some extent, the new smb series haven't expanded what the older ones did. The lack of innovation is very clear. The older ones have an identity. They have basically the same formula but feel distinct from one another. The new smb games are just upgraded versions of the DS game.

I think the new ones are better, you should look deeper into the themes of the new games, each level has it’s own theme. An example is world 6-4 (or 5) in new super mario bros wii when you are in a flooded cave and you get to control the light of a raft and shine it in different places to uncover places, so for me the new games win!

I agree with this statement except in the case of Super Mario world. Super Mario World (SMW) is Super good. It gives the player limitations in world one to teach them the mechanics of the game, then using the cape feather opens up a ton of freedom that requires skill and knowledge of the game to truly utilize. The game keeps freedom as main element of the game, with great levels (although not as good as the modern games) and allows the player to super easily just pick up and play the game however they like. They can search for secrets, beat all the levels, or beat bowser in about 20 minutes. There is so many more options and freedoms in SMW you don’t really get in other Mario games. Edit:Remember when I said I liked the way the modern games design individual levels? Well, the SMW utilizes a similar formula, but upscaled to the entire game rather than individual levels. After you learn to play the game in world 1, it introduces the freedoms the game gives you, and if you know how to use them, you can finish the game much faster, or use it to see and play some more great levels. Edit 2: I do agree that there is some bias with him, but I believe that SMW is the best 2D Mario game.

I choose the new super mario tiltle over the older ones on 3 reasons 1. The music and level design are way happyer and fun then the older ones (though super mario world is super close i loved that one too) 2.the variant of powerups theur are so many combenations and can be used to get to new secret places if you use them right and their way more fun. 3. The bosses while the bosses in the forttresses in new supermario were pale i LOVED the diffrent bosses from the game, the old mario bros bosses were pale and borring after a while so i injoyed them less. The old ones are definitely better and ironically I think nostalgia marketing towards people of my generation is what's making Nintendo lose some of its magic. I like the new games though, but the old ones are a million times better. Nintendo games used to be groundbreaking and revolutionizing gaming but now they seem too caught up in their own nostalgia, I mean, imagine if instead of Super Mario 64 we got a dumbed down rehash of the original Mario Bros game or something. I dunno, it's hard to make a comparison. But I think Nintendo misunderstood what we meant when we said that we wanted Nintendo games to recapture the magic they used to have. We meant we wanted them to keep breaking new ground, pushing the envelope and keep the spirit of the challenging Mario games alive for Generation Z and whatever generation comes after them. Instead we get decent to kinda good remakes but no epic groundbreaking adventures that push the limits of the technology of the day. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the "New Super Mario Bros" series and am always glad I bought one after I do, but it's just not the same. And I don't think it's just because I'm 25, either.

I have to disagree with the levels being better in the old games because in SMB Wii there are many different level ideas that weren’t in the old games also the puzzles in the SMBU ghost houses are way better than the ones in SMW

I love them all but I do like the new ones more. They take everything from the old ones and improved on them and that was the point of the new ones anyway. Plus it’s more 2d MARIO so how can I not love them.

This is so innacurate. Earned my dislike. For the Items and power ups, at 4:11 you literally said they had a ton of power ups, but then you acted like there was only 2. Also, for the levels, WTF?!?! The levels have improved SO much! In World 8 of New Super Mario Brothers, they had tilting platforms, meteors, Bone rides, lava shooting out of the ground! The other worlds also had improvements to, like the spinning ground thing and that dark cave where you had the light block in New Super Mario Brothers wii. For the enimies, there were many new enemies in the New Super Mario Brothers games. Those fish guys that throw rocks at you, spiders, those snow guys, bats, and more. I like some of your other videos, but this is trash.
