Yeah the beginning of KHII is slow. But I've played it enough times that I sort of pick up on what they're trying to do. And I need to admit that the line "Well, looks like my summer vacation is over" always makes me tear up. Especially since playing KHII was a tradition of ending summer during my school years. It's too long, but I think it helps drive the message home that, not only is Roxas' mundane daily life that he was happy with gone, but so is his privilege to even be an autonomous person. It's pretty upsetting. And then he is a great introduction to the plight of all Nobodies.

That Driver one is so real... Me and my sister hated it and we didn't understand some of the moves since we didn't know car stunts, like Slalom. We had no memory card so we had to do it EVERY time if we wanted to get the "other" cars. We stuck with the free drive mostly though. :(

Honestly the way to look at the tutorial for Driver is to not look at it as a tutorial, because it isn't. As far as Undercover mode is concerned, it is a test of skill. You're the _driver._ You're supposed to know this stuff as if it were your password.

For Kingdom Hearts 2, while I don't hate it, I can completely understand people not liking it. And for those defending it because of 379.5/2-348 months, just remember that there was a sizable gap between the two games, so the damage was pretty much done by then.

The intro can be finished in 20 minutes or less depending if you're a speed running but from the perspective he's speaking from, it could be a turn off to casuals playing the game casually depending on how patient you are

The Soe That game has a serious problem of reminding someone what to do next. I gave up on the game when I forgot where I was going or even doing. Also, the overall drabness and mute colors got tiring to look at.

Skyward Sword is a bit slow too but at least it actually introduces elements that are relevant throughout the game such as Zelda, Groose and also the Loftwing riding. But Twilight Princess, let's just herd some fucking goats

The opening to Twilight Princess immediately comes to mind honestly. Imagine all of the problems you mentioned with KH2's opening, except without ANY sort of mystery or intrigue until the twilight realm hits...and even then you have to fight your way through a Tears of Light fetch quest before the game actually gets good. It's kind of awful. (Personally though I do love KH2's opening but that's just me.)

I don't think there is anyone that likes the KH2 opening as an opening. It's just that once KH fans play or watch 358/2 days and see all the depressing shit Roxas went through to get to the opening segment, it makes some people have a fond emotional attachment to it as it is an integral part of his story. They misinterpret their love for the character as love for the opening.

RodniDemental Well as a tutorial, yeah. With all of this time they have leading you through this world and story, they could have implemented a basic understanding of game mechanics far better than they did. They certainly tried, but it was a disjointed and awkward effort.

Pokemon Sun and Moon. Very obvious choice, I know, but the opening of these games is just so freaking slow. It's one massive tutorial, roadblocked by constant pointless diversions (like the Trainer School segment and hunting for Nebby in Melemele Meadow) and long cutscenes.

Really interesting, Caddy; it's neat to see another opinion on KH2. It's weird because we usually align with a lot of tastes (both grew up on Crash and Spyro), yet we couldn't be further apart here. Kingdom Hearts 2 is my favorite video game, and in my favorite franchise, and I think that opening bit may be my favorite opening to any video game. It's not really something to argue though, as it sounds like a matter of taste. All those things you said that would improve the opening are things that I'm really grateful are not in there, as I see it as spoiling the experience; to me, it's the perfect opening to any game, but I guess that's because I'm totally entwined in everything that franchise aims for. To each their own, and thanks for another intriguing video.

Oh I love KH2 but yeah that entire intro sequence was boring af. For me it was exciting to just be playing KH2 after waiting so long for it but yeah replaying the game is a chore because of that intro. At least they leaned from that and haven't really done it since then, you can see they listened to the criticism in the more recent ones.

The KH2 Opening was the reason why my sister put the game down and ignored it until I got curious and play the game myself. It's really my sister's game, but I remember her telling me when I asked her about it, she hated how slow the beginning was. I understood what she meant without a single thought.

Driver's tutorial is so ridiculous that I was never even able to get past it and play the rest of the game! Jet Set Radio has a really difficult tutorial as well, but at least it's not mandatory!

I’d say Skyward Sword was worse. It takes well over an hour to get to the first area and it did not take nearly that long in TP. I don’t really even like sitting around in Clock Town in MM all that much either. I just sit and grind rupees for most of the time because you get all you need to get done within the first day if you know what you’re doing. Really sucks on repeat play throughs.

When replaying KH2 last year, my brother [who was playing through the game with me after coming from KH1] asked me "Who's this *nobody*? I want Sora." during the intro where it showed Roxas. I lost my shit laughing and he didn't understand why. Also yes KH2's opening is much too long.
