Just installed a new hot water heater. My old one exploded out of the top. Like a fountain.. from the exhaust hole. A real leaker... Lucky I walked down to the basement to switch the laundry probably less than a minute after it exploded. A dozen towels cleaned up the mess... Lucky it didn't happen at night while we were asleep. Definitely getting a water alarm after that happened.

Hi Steve. I have a Utica similar but with 4 tubes. I had to order a new pilot assembly because I destroyed the old one trying to change the thermocouple. Seems like the heat in that area seizes up threads. Got a good pilot flame now, 30 years and still running.

Just helped me get the heat back on tonight with a real feel of 13. Thanks, guy!

Pull a single wire out of your wire brush. It fits the orifice in the pilot perfectly. Just push it in and your clean.

You don't have rocket science there, you have rust science.

Is that foil and fleece under the burners essential? I pulled it and dumped the rust and lost most of the fleece.

I have that same heater...I just changed from the large old style expansion tank to the new bladder style. used one of you old video's to help me. If my heater goes...I'm going to hate to get a new one because nothing today last long. thanks for your video's ...i wish you where in NJ. you would be my plumber.

I remain convinced that running a dehumidifier in an old basement saves money in the long run because of the corrosion it prevents.

I got 2 after the 1st summer in this house realizing how rusty some tools got. I keep the dehumidifiers off Nov-April but I must of saved my boiler and air handler from rust.
@Bob.W.2 жыл бұрын
Not to mention guns as well as other tools (guns are tools). No way I could subject them to spring and summer basement humidity. Anyway, my steam boiler stays nice and dry during its off season. When that runs everything is warm and dry.
@ohioplayer-bl9em2 жыл бұрын
I keep one running year around. Set it at 65% some would say that's to high and I should set it lower. 65% is much better than nothing.. seems to keep the basement smell away and also keep my electric bill from being stupid. I also have a vent in the basement that keeps the air moving.

Good Theory on the calculating the size of the piping . You need to teach from the old school and show some of these wannabe plumbers how to pour a horizontal lead joint on some cast iron piping and show how to use a joint runner and the tech tips when doing this type work. Do you do plumbing drawings ?

What kind of truck is that he drives. Looks pretty large almost like a tractor trailer cab only in the form of a very large van like an RV or something. Mostly large vans like that have overhead windshield wipers

Those vent dampers are notorious, but they don't fail it's bi-metal they were all over philthydelphia! You should carry a couple different pilot assembles so you can just pop um in. Thanks again for the videos. 🥃🥃🍺🍺🍺🎯🏌🏻♀️ Stay safe. Retired (werk'n)keyboard super tech. Wear your safety glasses!

That damper is scary. I say like you, get that out of there. A new boiler properly installed is needed.

I used to carry a safety pin for cleaning pilot orifice, take the burner apart, clean it, and be done. If ya come across one of those dampers in the flue pipe, take it out !
@rustyshakleford52302 жыл бұрын
Might have a tiny leak the cast when the boilers hot rusting that shit out. Moisture in the gas. More likely just lack of having it serviced.

You might try using a meter on the output of the pilot before you break things.

Disconnect the pilot line at gas valve and blow air through that end, cleans oriface and all. That damper is illegal and scary. Your the last man working on it don’t leave yourself exposed for liability.

Should have pressed the fitting for that thermocouple into the brass housing.
@bassman345162 жыл бұрын
That vent is dangerous no safety mechanism to interrupt power to the gas valve in case it fails to open. It’ll just dump exhaust gasses and co right into the house

Yes, this is just one of the reasons we are called "Massholes" we are kind of crass I guess. It gets cold up here, no time for gentries, say what ya gotta say fast or your lips and teeth will freeze. LOL But we do have our good points. My ex Boyfriend was from washington DC, he told me he got stuck on a highway out there an hundreds of people drove by and no one helped him. No one even enquired to what his problem was. He had to walk off the next exit to find a phone to call for professional help. Then he mentioned when his car broke down here in Mass, within minutes some one stopped by and helped him get going again. A lot of times we get the reputation that we are not open, friendly people, we seem standoffish. Yeah, that can be a factor, but once the ice is broken things are fine. My ex also remarked us New Englanders smoke and drink coffee a lot! I told him, "Hey, it gets cold here. You gotta do something to keep you going." I dont do either though, but there are plenty who do both or just one or the other.

those bimetallic passive flu dampers used to be hot shit sold by all the hvac guys back in the mid eighties. some have the solid piece and others had the fingers of metal arranged in a circle. we call that, gas fired circulated hot water, after all the water should never actually boil. we call that a steam boiler

My thermostat stopped working and I saw online I need a thermocouple. I need you to give me a price for a new thermocouple over the phone. I saw online they are only $15 on Amazon... You are ripping me off charging me $140 to replace a $20 part!! This is the shit homeowners don't realize. I rusted nut turns into a broken drill bit and a 10 minute job turns into a shit show.
