This test is in Europe and Toyota over there didn’t have air bags but in the us air bags where demanded in 1994 and if you don’t have a front airbag you can’t sell the vehicle

My first car was a 1994 BMW 740iL. No airbags at all, but it was a tank. Volvo was one of the few companies using airbags before they were mandatory.

The reason its like that is because new cars are designed to crumple partially. If not, all the momentum from the car will go to you, so even with a seatbelt, yould go flying.

@theman5893 Yes. That solid steel bumper can do a lot. I once slid an 83 Oldsmobile Brougham Regency 98 into a dirt ditch at about 20 mph. The car bounced back on the road and kept going like nothing had happened. Do that in today's cars, not an SUV/Truck, and you would have major body damage, and if the airbags deploy, the car is considered totaled by the insurance company.

⁠@@nonyabusiness4151I’ll explain why modern cars are “weak” and can’t survive hitting a deer. Older cars were often made from high quality materials and because of that they weren’t deforming as easily. There is a problem with car being as solid as a rock though. In case you crash into something a lot of kinetic energy will be absorbed by your body leading to worse injuries and overall more physical damage to your body. Modern cars are designed to be more deformable which means they will absorb more of that kinetic energy and expose occupants to lower g forces during an impact. This is what saves people in crashes. Basically that metal that gets crushed and bent is supposed to act as sort of a cushion to hopefully help you walk away with ideally no injuries. It’s all because of safety. And while I understand your point I am glad that cars are made to protect their occupants.

You wouldn’t die fast if it’s a low-speed accident, which would leave you potentially paralyzed (in the old car) instead of mildly injured (in the new car).

To be fair to the 98’ Camry, it just got hit by a much bigger, heavier and stronger modern car, so of course it was going to be destroyed. Had it been hit by another car of the same age it probably would’ve faired better.

In our country it’s the opposite, the new cars gets destroyed more than the old cars, one time my grandma’s Renault Megan failed break and it front rended a 19’s red fiat well my grandma’s car’s back bumper was dented and the back left headlight was cracked, but nothing happend to the fiat only some paint that got on my grandma’s car paint, Btw hopefully u understand me cuz I’m not very well at English and also the fiat looks like a fiat uno

Newer cars are actually safer because of being more fragile. They have crumple zones - areas including the trunk and engine bay which are designed to crumple and absorb as much of the impact as possible.

If the world just drove safe, without any car to inorganic obstacle collisions, I doubt youwould ever have to worry. Even in a speedy rust bucket, you won't die just from coming into contact with any unexpected wildlife, at night.

The Cybertruck has no crumple zones and absolutely shit build quality. I’m willing to bet if you put a 90s pickup truck of a similar weight, it wouldn’t fare worse.
