Pine needle tea is a favorite of mine in winter. More vitamin C than oranges and like sweet gum balls, has Shekimic acid which is basically natural Tamiflu.

Great talk. As far as eating critters, I've got a friend whose son came back from Iraq and said he was treated to a very fancy going-away feast provided by a local tribal leader. The centerpiece was a whole cut of meat adorned with almonds and raisins, which he said was absolutely delicious. After he badgered the host enough, he admitted it was dog. As far as food allergies, your advice should be heeded. I'm known as a forager, and got in a habit of gifting acquaintances with my surplus of pawpaws, especially. Kind of like a Johnny Appleseed type ambassador of wild eats. A few years back, a friend's wife had a bad reaction to one of the pawpaws I'd given them - she'd never had one - and broke out in a severe rash. Kind of makes me more leery these days about sharing God's bounty.
@baileybrunson422 ай бұрын
You know TDC, sharing your knowledge and God's bounty is a good thing.. I have no doubt that your gifting your friend and his wife wasn't malicious. That your intentions were good. I'm sorry too that she had the bad reaction. I wish you were somewhere close by. I would really like to learn the "tricks and trade" of a really good forager.. 🐻

I was I could remember all the secrets I have stored in my head. As the old man creeps in its harder than ever to recall things that you’ve filed away. That is one reason these conversations with Bear and Blackie are so important. They get us old guys to thinking and remembering things we’ve stored away and not used in a while. Today’s conversation got me to thinking about small game hunts with my grandpaw and uncle. Single shot shotguns and lots of squirrel or rabbits. They used a single shot H&R 12-gauge shotgun. My first gun was a H&R Pardner 20-gauge single shot. Still use it today, has many memories of good time with family in the woods. Thanks to Bear and Blackie for this conversation about the Old Wayz as they continue to stack great memories for me. - Tennessee Smoky

spot on sir! love these old ways vids! ... was it a single shot pardner or was it a topper model 088? I had a topper 88 in 20g in 1982. recently I found its big brother a 12g model 058, in pristine condition for $169 on the used rack, double its brand new price, had to snatch 'er up and add to the 20!

Love hearing you guys and the wisdom you share. Thank you for sharing. Sadley all my Grandparents and Great Grandparents have passed on. I used to love hearing about their life's experiences especially in simpler times. It might have been harder however they spoke of it fondly because everything meant so much more. I have heard talk of people night hunting back in the day with 22 calibers. I also have heard that it never happened., Have either of you ever heard the older generation speak of filling the table that way in the simpler days? Thank you

My favorite sidearm is my Sig 1911, the first gen square slide. That thing is a brick and shoots so well. Heavy enough that if I run out of ammo I can use it as a club😂 Here in East Tennessee all summer I have seen turkey by the load full in the woods, all of them with little ones. It’s a bumper crop this year. We have had a lot of coyote but seems like they aren’t wiping out any of the ground birds, lots of thunder chickens in the woods too. (If you know what a thunder chicken is, you know😂)

Nice talk guys. I remember back quite a few years ago, when they used to have regular local gun & knife shows. I seen some Springfield Armory 1911's and if I remember correctly, they had 3 different sizes. They were a military OD green with a brown wood checkered grip. I really wanted to get one but couldn't afford it at the time. I would still like to find one. I don't think they make them anymore. Probably like the Holy Grail now...

Had a close friend of mine put a bullet through the floor board of a car after releasing the slide of his 1911 on a loaded magazine; his firing pin spring had weakened, allowing forward momentum of the firing pin to fire the cartridge. But, other than the grip angle (which makes it an unnatural pointer for me), I really like the 1911 design.
@baileybrunson422 ай бұрын
I know nothing can be all things to all people.. but IMHO the 1911 is about as close to perfection as I've come across.. there has to be reason it's been in production more than a century and is basically unchanged.. the 1873 SSA is the same way.. 🐻

Good BS session. The drives in the north have gone away. I think everyone who shoots deer uses a stand. There are guys that hunt but their butts don't leave the atv seat. They come out with a radio blaring to cover the sound of the atv. They sit and have a couple of cans of beer and then head back home. You hope they are not near your stand. Grouse hunting is fun as it is hard but you get a lot of woods walking. Never cared for game farm hunting as my dad would say you might as well shoot fish in a barrel. I feel the same about going out on a charter boat. You pick cards to basically reel in a fish. That's the same, probably like dude ranching. Blackie needs a monical that he can sight close and then let it drop. I wear contacts but in reality only wear one. One for distance in my right eye and nothing in my left for up close. You two should head out to Nebraska or the Dakotas for a pheasant hunt. By the way a grouse goes up like a duck but will try to hide until it can scare the snot out of you. Had them come out under or beside a horse. Now that is a ride. Should be a rodeo event.
@baileybrunson422 ай бұрын
That pheasant hunt sounds like a great idea Willys.. never hunted them or grouse (I guess quail are in that same family group). A lot of folks down here have stopped hunting with dogs in drives. My guess is the upkeep expenses and the time spent hunting for the dogs.. 🐻
@57WillysCJ2 ай бұрын
@@baileybrunson42 I believe they are grouped with the prairie chicken. The ruffed grouse goes down to the top of your state. We have those and the sharp-tailed. Sadly loss of habitat as well as west nile is effecting all of them. In the 19th century the greater prairie chicken number in the millions in Illinois. As of 2019 there were only 200 left. I should say it's habitat but the increase in racoon, skunk and coyote is messing with all ground nesting birds. Definately a reason to support trappers.

You gentlemen have reminded me of one of the stupidest things I’ve ever done. Long ago, I bought a Series 70 nickel plated .45. Had a bulged barrel so I got it cheap. While new barrel and micro bushing was on order, the gunsmith loaned me a parkerized GI barrel and bushing to use. That particular combo was THE most accurate I’ve ever seen. And I returned it when my custom fit stuff came in which wasn’t nearly as good. I should have bought that loaner set and just ate the cost of the other! Always regretted that one!🥲
