I had a little Jewish Professor, in college, who taught history. His first day, he said I am NOT going to talk about religion! He then proceeded to explain how the various religions shaped society, culture, and the history of the world. Best damn history class & Professor, I ever had! 👍👍😊 So History is history. Whether a person likes religion or not!? Religion is what binds communities together!

Well, Santee, this one hits close to home since my father was a Baptist preacher and my nickname, Deacon, is because of my friendship with another Baptist preacher, Preacher Killen. Also one of my first construction jobs was the reconstruction of Mission San Jose, which was in Freemont, CA. It is probably the best job I will ever have. In places the walls are over ten feet thick, modern adobe, not the classic mud and straw, and the doors and staircase to the bell tower were built by a Mexican artist who did the whole enterprise with dowels, not one single nail. Part of the original building survived the earthquake that destroyed the original mission and you can see how it was built, with clay and boulders for the foundation and adobe bricks made of mud and straw covered by a mortar to make it waterproof. Of course it is surrounded by a cemetery including inside the building. I would love to show it to you if you ever mosey on down to San Francisco. Actually don't go to San Francisco. If you ever come to the area stay in Santa Cruz, God's country, so to speak.

In my opinion, I don’t feel like churches receive enough praise for their impact when it came to settling and "taming" the Old West. Churches really helped establish a healthy community and keep said community together (they still do today in many parts of the world). Churches are what allowed what would otherwise be total strangers towards each other to become friends/acquaintances. How many couples who became married and started families met through their church? Finally, the amount of work a church would contribute towards a community (and still do to this day) cannot be overstated (e.g. like how you mentioned churches functioning as hospitals or schools). As always, great video. Thank you for taking the time and effort to put this together.

It is a rather small Methodist church, but i hear the church bell every sunday as i walk into my own church, which is down the road from that one. Did a bit of Googling on it; apparently, it is one of either two or three octagonal buildings left in America built during that period. McBee United Methodist Church in Conestee, SC. If you're ever down around San Antonio, a visit to the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park is a must. They're not part of the Alamo (today.) The Alamo is run by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the other missions are overlooked by the National Park Service. They are part of Alamo in the sense that the Spanish built 'em, but the SA Missions are more original and less commercial. All are still working Catholic Churches, but everything is open to the public. Pretty amazing exploring buildings and surrounding lands built before *any* modern convenience, and built before the US was the US...

Built in the 1850's and possibly a stop on the underground railroad. Recently some no good miscreants set fire to it back in 06, but in two years and with like 75% of the logs it was built with intact it was rebuilt!
