"Hey folks. Alcaras here with another quick video..." *looks at video length...* Love your content BTW.

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I didn't expect it to go so long when I started recording. (and in theory, it could have been 15m long had I just kept it to how to build UUs without going to each one)

There is a major lack of decent explanatory videos for aspects of this game, I also love the content and it is helping me a lot, thanks!

Played this game for about 100 hours, learned more in the first five minutes of this video than I have on my own, thanks.

Appreciate all your work and guide. Can you please do a religion tutorial? I want to see if it is a viable play or not worth considering

Carthage/Elephants: The more I play with Panic the more I appreciate it's versatility. You can temporarily occupy space to force the stun or even movement to a specific tile. Especially strong if there's a few key units around. Str6 Elephants stun str8 or str10 units just fine. Force movement to cancel unlibered (stun doesn't) or fortified. Moving a unit off a fort, out of cover, breaking Commander/Hoplite/Phalangite formation or pushing a unit into a space to allow a rout chain to continue. There's so much you can do with it if you pay close attention. Persia: Their UU are actually cheaper in up front cost because the ranged unit cost reduction to 75%. Another thing that bears mentioning is that rout only triggers when killing adjacent units but does so even when further targets are only 2+ tiles away. This makes it far easier to get rout attacks from every kill even if it's not one big rout chain.

Yeah, Carthage Elephants are quite strong but are probably the hardest to use well? Yeah, I should have mentioned the Ranged unit cost reduction applying to the UU.

If you use the premade maps, carthage has zero issues with getting elephants. Agreed on it being situational in random maps and more or less mandating Barcid family.
@vladimirshapran72862 жыл бұрын
Persia also get -25% ranged discount, and their UU is ranged!

Excellent point!

Note on Persia UU -- it benefits from the Persian nation trait that Ranged units cost 25% less. So it costs 75 iron and 37.5 food for the 6 STR version and 75 iron and 75 food for the 8 STR unit. It's cheaper than it appears in the video, in other words :D Thanks to several commenters (festifk, Vladimir Shapran) for pointing this out!

Your "barracks layout" in the game manual really changed my understanding of the game! Trying to optimize like that for the main order producing buildings really helped me take on the harder difficulties. This and understanding the 4/7 law threshold elevated my game. Great content!

Rhetoric Law Choice (Epics vs. Exploration): Reflecting on this a bit more, I think I'm inclined to try Exploration over Epics, since the Neutral Movement bonus along Rivers is really quite strong, especially in the later game (whereas the Epics culture bonus sort of falls off in utility as the game goes longer). Both are great choices though.

A good strategy note about Babylonia They are somewhat luck-based terrain-wise. They are best (yeah that'll sound unusual) in thick forests with Tactician Leaders. The strat is to actually rush citadel and prepare a Tactician heir to hide akkadian/cimmerian archers in thick forests for surprise attacks. Even if the enemies are in forest tiles, they still do enough damage to leave a big rout chain for horses to charge in.

Superb video! Succinct and well-paced delivery of a wealth of information that would otherwise be difficult to master.

What are your thoughts on the +25% splash damage promotion for the Akkadian/Cimmerian archers? I think that Eagle Eye/Marksman/Highlander are higher priorities than it, but would it be worth taking over something like Focus?
@alcaras2 жыл бұрын
Situational, depending on what you're facing. If there's a lot of clumped enemy units (e.g. late game density) the Splash might be nice. If not, probably Focus.

Oh heck, I have over 400 hours played of Old World and somehow never noticed that each city has a blue culture bar as their name on the map! 🤦♂ And you can mouse over it for full details. sigh

Tons of little UI things in this game -- it's a great UI but has a bit of a learning curve. The manual is a great read in pointing all of these out!

I'm so confused by rout... are there units that disable Rout? Iv gotten so many kills with Rout units and they don't get another move. Am I missing something?
@alcaras2 жыл бұрын
Polearm-class units (Spearmen, Hoplites/Phalangites, Pikemen, and Conscripts) will not trigger Rout when they die.
@user-aymanzone Жыл бұрын
vid 39:38 did you say "horse melee units that aren't infantry"? I thought infinitary and melee mean the same thing basically
@alcaras Жыл бұрын
infantry = units that walk around on their own feet (swords, archers, etc.), e.g. non-horse, non-siege units melee = not ranged

I think that the siege units like onager are much too weak. Youi get them around 100y and everybody has a wall. Even if you have twelve onagers and 8 crossbows, it takes FOREVER to raid a city. Not so in Civilization. Why have a unit that you have to wait 100moves to upgrade to something that actually does SOMETHING!!????
@alcaras2 жыл бұрын
I'd expect to get Onagers way earlier than t100 -- cities aren't strong and they are quite effective because once they're set up, they have huge range and no ranged damage fall off. For late game, i.e. t100 and beyond, you want Mangonels.

1) Why do Phalangites look MORE Roman than the roman units? 2) The Hastati unit replaces the better Mace men unit but uses...spears? 3) Roman Legionary are worse than Swords men but Swords men visually look more Roman than Legionary? W T F?
@jacklu16116 ай бұрын
yeah, I feel the weakest aspect of the game is the appearances of the units. They could have used macedonian pikemen or spartans as a model for phalangites, and made the icon for the legionary look like anything other than a barbarian shield. Also, waiting day & night for the devs to provide distinct unit appearances for each civ. Really throws off the role play when everybody's warriors look like Roman auxilia & spearmen look like greek hoplites :(.
