Thanks so much for highlighting this model. I owned an all black 1990 Formula (short model year run) for 10 years and wish I still had it. Mine was the 5.0 TPI 5 speed model which made it even more rare. The great thing about the TPI/5 speed option was that it included the N10 dual cat exhaust, GU6/G80 3.42 limited slip rear, KC4 engine oil cooler, and J65 4 wheel disk brakes. And of course it had the awesome WS6 handling package like all Formulas. These cars were capable of high 14 quarter mile times right out of the box. Mine had a lot of popular bolt ons at the time and ran a 14 flat at almost 100 mph. It was truly an LX 5.0 fighter and a great looking car.

We love these cars because they are fun in cool looking, not because they are the fasted cars made. I have a 80's Trans Am in excellent condition and I get so many looks and questions when I drive it. So many people don't even know what it is and since it is in great condition, they don't realize it's an old car. A lot of people think it's an expensive, exotic foreign car. People forget that in the 80's/90's, 0-60 in 8 seconds was considered quick, and anything under 7 seconds was considered a real screamer. Nowadays there are pickup trucks and even Tauruses that will hit 0-60 in around 6 seconds. In it's day, the Formula was highly respected.

Keep in mind these cars were about torque. They only had around 240hp, but they were very lively and good light to light. I had a '91 Formula 350 1LE and it was pretty quick, but we're talking very low 14s here around 96mph. It also was about 150lbs lighter than a regular Formula. A Cobalt SS could beat that more than a few years ago. Nevertheless, for its time it was fast, got good mileage, and was fun to drive.

I bought an '87 Formula 350 brand new. I went from a '79 10th Anniversary T/A with a 400/4 speed to the Formula. My other car was a '69 GTO with a '70 455 that was built. I still have the GTO. I guess it's all about perspective but I was truly disappointed with the 350 TPI. I got beat by every 5.0 Mustang and Buick GN I came up against. I even raced my buddy with his '87 IROC 305 and we stayed neck and neck from 20 to about 80. The engine looked really impressive and I guess for a small block maybe it was torquey, but I always wanted more out of it than I got. It did handle and brake excellently and for a 19 year old kid it was a really great car. A drunk driver rear ended it in December of 1989 and totaled it. It had 21k miles and was in perfect condition. I would even wash the undercarriage at the carwash every week and kept it immaculate. I wish I had it back pre-wreck but I wish even more I had the 10th Anniversary T/A back.

Actually the original Formula in 1970 was marketed as the straight line performance version of the Firebird. It had all of the Trans Am engines available and a fiberglass hood to reduce front end weight and a softer standard suspension. It was marketed that way all throughout the 2nd generation. The '87 up Formulas had the WS6 suspension standard and we all know it was the king of the twisty turnies. I think you are right that it was more marketed as cheaper Trans Am and not a drag Firebird. I would buy another '87 Formula today in a heartbeat if I found a really nice one. I don't care about being the fastest car on the road anymore and they were performance cars and fun to drive anyway.

@carrsllccarrillo65074 жыл бұрын
@@sbf_fox2434 I agree with you on the straight line. The mustang was designed better for straight line duties. I believe it's due to the shorter wheel base and body length. Plus the location of the engine was probably more closer to the firewall to help distribute weight. The formula was originally to combat the mustang at the strip while the trans am was the road course expert. What made the 3rd gen bird (and 'maro) line interesting was that the strut towers were adjustable for camber setups. Making the f body car a natural selection for racing either at the strip or at the road courses.

I had a 1990 Trans Am GTA. Driving it always brought a smile to my face but I definitely had a Lemon. The heater core was replaced along with the carpet. Drivers seat leather completely cracked and peeled in the first year-also replaced. Computer crapped out-replaced. Lots of squeaks and rattles. Missing rear suspension parts(sway bar) Car spent a lot of its first year in the shop.

It amazes me it has been his daily car since senior year in High School. I have know idea how many miles it has, but he takes care of it, never wrecked, its been broken into just to steal the stereo thats about it and it still rides like a new car, so smooth and powerful 350 5.7 V8 is bullet proof

You bought the LX Mustang notchback with the 5 liter for Police use or to turn into a dragstrip car. You still see lots of those on the strip. Not too many people were willing to tear out all the sound deadening, interior and options of a Formula Firebird or a fully loaded GT stang for racing purposes. The major problem with the Formula and the GT were the higher insurance rates - you didn't get that higher rate with a Mustang LX even with the 5 liter. You could also get the Buick Regal with the turbo V6 without any performance stickers and fake scoops. A little tweaking here and there and you're running with the big dogs of the day. Also could get a turbo Dodge Daytona hatchback without the stickers and fake scoops for pretty cheap - a little tweaking and you're running 7 seconds zero to sixty easy.

I love the gen 3 F bodies. I liked the trans am and Z28. The formula holds a special place though, because they aren't trans ams. Formula sounds cool as a word. The gen 2 had the cool hoods, the gen 3 had that greasy slick look. I stopped looking at 130 mph in a 95 formula.

What a wonderful video (as per usual from you). Great details about this great late '80's/early 90's 'pony' car. Thank you. The Formula was a gem...I actually owned a loaded, all black, '87, 5.0l TPI, 5 spd. (bought it used in 1993). I MUCH preferred the subtle looks of the Formula (compared to the over-the-top looks of the Trans Am). I really enjoyed it. Watching your video made me miss it all the more.

You know what GM car had awful looking wheels back then … Grand National. They look like Buick Riviera wheels. The T-Type wheels were better looking. Also the early Monte SS wheels were nothing to look at, but the later alloy wheels that looked like late 2nd generation Camaro wheels were decent. The 1987-1990 Mustang GT turbine wheels were pretty awful too.

It's a common mistake but Ws6 did not put rear disk on the 1989 L03 formula. You needed 1LE for rear disks. Also two tone was the standard formula package, you had to order it with the two tone delete. I have a 89 formula that I have owned since mid 90s that is Ws6 with drums and that is on the build sheet and rpo sticker.

I told him nicely that his Dad could test drive it, but not the kid... I took them for a ride around town, and the kid was orgasmic, lol... His first question was... "Will it do a big burnout?"... Some other performance goodies included an aluminum driveshaft and limited slip differential, however there is some debate on whether the updated limited slip 7.6 28 spline 10 bolt could handle the power as well as the earlier 7.75 28 spline 9 bolts from Australia's Borg Warner company, since the 9 bolts had much fatter drive axles, bearing retainer plates instead of relying on C clips, and 4 pinion carriers, making them towing worthy if one was so inclined.
@MidnightMechanic6 жыл бұрын
@William Schwartz Did you check how many bolts it's got? Borg Warners came in very unique gear ratios for Camaros, 2.77, 3.27, and 3.45, a 3.23 would denote a 10 bolt. Most likely you have a 3.27 if it's a 9 bolt, which most likely it is since they carried 9 bolts as performance rear ends until the limited slip 28 spline 10 bolt was released. I get what you mean though, a 3 series carrier bolted to a lightweight aluminum driveshaft, and the first gear in a 4L60 being 3.06, that's well over 9 rotations of torque multiplication, 3rd gen F bodies are burnout kings!

My first car was an '86 Fiero GT. I'll come clean, for a long time I had my heart set on an MR2. My dad ultimately convinced me to go with Pontiac (it may have had something to do with him helping me secure my financing). I loved the car but it did eventually kill me financially to keep it running into the early '90s. A lot of fantastic memories nevertheless.
