Wow, I have the same boat as you do. Was looking to install a drain plug on it.

I also have a 1977 Sport boat . I am going to drill a 1 inch hole and use the Moeller kit that has the flared tube ,o ring and 2 collars that fit over tube . Also bought the flaring tool off ebay . My question you think it would help to drain it better if a couple 1/4 holes were drilled at the bottom in that triangular support in the middle ?

I don't think additional holes are necessary. 1/4" holes are also likely to plug with leaves or dirt. I don't have any problem letting accumulated rain water or the water carried in from wet dogs or people with the drain plug set up I have. The only time I remove the plug is when the boat is on the trailer for the trip home. Thank you for asking.

I just bought my first Grumman Sport boat, brought it home and replaced the transom with some left over plywood I had, it will do me for now until next year when I get better wood for it. I mounted a 6hp 1987 Johnson and will be ready to hit the water in the morning. I do have a question? Mine has the plate where the base of the mast is positioned but It also has a small eye on the outside of the transom (on your video it's just above the drain plug) and there is also has a small hole in the top edge of the transom. I'm guessing it's where the Rutter is mounted. Correct me on what this is for? Gracias for your videos.

Yes, your Sportboat has the mounting points for the sail rig, including mast and rudder.

Why didn't you drill and tap the aluminum saw the screws with thread into it don't get me wrong I like the idea I'll probably do the same thanks for the idea project

I didn't have a tap handy and wanted the security a nylock nut provides. Thank you for asking.

Use WD-40 as a lubricant when machining aluminum, works great keeps the tools from loading up with aluminum slag, just fabbed up a bow cap for my Espadon 12ft Aluminum boat out of aluminum checker plate, before I filed the edges clean, I coated my file with WD40, when it loaded up I wire brushed the aluminum bits from it.

Thanks for the information. I'll try WD-40 next time.

You should mention that brass should never be used in salt water. The zinc in brass eats away from electrolysis. Always use bronze in salt water!

Brass and aluminum do not mix. The brass will erode the aluminum . The two metals make a chemical reaction against each other. This is the same reason why you shouldn't use bottom paint with copper on your aluminum boat.✌️

Good video thanks. Do you have any problems with water leaking in from the screw holes?
@OldGuyDIY5 жыл бұрын
No, the E6000 makes a waterproof, flexible seal.

You could also use butyl tape, it’s like a sticky gummy tape you normally use for weather seal on travel trailers around vents and lights. Would work here as well.
