39:42 The Allies figured this out pretty fast, hence why their main tanks, the Sherman and Churchill, were medium tanks. The British were also the first nation to come up with the idea of the Main Battle Tank: essentially an up-armoured medium tank with a heavy tank's gun. This turned into the Centurion.
@Crazyfrog41
@Crazyfrog41 Жыл бұрын
The Churchill is NOT a medium tank... it was originally designed as an infantry support tank... and got reclassified as a heavy tank... thus, why it has more armor, and is significantly slower than the Tiger 1
@anzaca1

@@Crazyfrog41 It was far better, though. And it had the best cross-country performance.

@@anzaca1 true... But it's still not a MEDIUM tank... It's a heavy tank.... Unless you are talking about the Cromwell tank, which WAS a medium tank, and is probably my favorit British tank In the war

Ok possibly weird connection on the MBT but that sounds a bit like the mentality behind a Battlecruiser take the big gun and put it on a medium tank/cruiser with a little bit more armour than normal and if so that would actually make a bit of sense why the British had the first design as they were one of the few still using Battlecruisers so it would probably be easier for the mentality to translate over

If I'm not mistaken I think that he came to the conclusion that no tank was "the best"™ The successful tanks severed their purpose well in their role. The most versatile and survivable, in his opinion, and mine ,was the Sherman.

45:30 I mean, indirectly, he kind of think Sherman is overall the best tank of WW2. However, as Lazerpig arrested many time, tanks are not simple tool of war to execute one or few tasks. There are way too many hard and soft factors. And yet, by far, Sherman was the closest to title of the best tank.

Eh, that was the main thing with Germany in WW2. They had loads of prototypes and new things... but very little in reliable, steady things. Prototypes are great... but you can't really keep up with them or create infrastructure for them at the snap of a finger.

I did like one part of a military science fiction story I wrote where a tank commander (Actually a divisional and later basically army group commander), when asked what gave her the largest advantage over her foes, was the fact she installed a mini-fridge to cool vodka. She said "Yes, the tank has the most advanced gun ever designed, it has a fast turret speed, it has two feet of solid titanium armor. But the biggest advantage when I'm fighting Abrams and T-90s is that I have a well disciplined crew who can work with the vehicle. Even the 75mm PGM 2014 can't tell the difference between 10mm of steel and 1000mm of steel. The fast turret speed means nothing when I'm shot first. My armor means nothing when a mortar hits the engine deck. The fact my vehicle is designed competently, built competently and run competently in non-numerical stats such as crew comfort, space, lighting, markings, and simplicity make it significantly more deadly than our contemporaries. Yes, a 120mm railgun against an Abrams isn't a fair fight. But I'm not going to really want to put to test a 120mm APFSDS round against my tank unless I absolutely have to." I took lessons from Lazerpig and others when writing this ever evolving story and this is one lesson I did like a lot.

While the Tiger had its good and bad points as Lazerpig pointed out, the situation that the Germans found themselves in was not kind to it either. It was built to make breakthroughs in enemy lines and thus the reliability issues and how difficult it was to repair were considered acceptable because it was expected that it would not see long, uninterrupted periods of use. Unfortunately for them, it was increasingly used as a frontline fighter due to the situation that Germany found itself in.

I’d argue best tank from just a very middle of the road point of view would have to be the Sherman, it was reliable, built en mass, mass production of parts, decently fast, well armored against small arms and grenades, moderately powered gun that was quick to reload and was light and small enough that it could navigate tight streets of cities, and utilize roads and bridges without collapsing the infrastructure under its weight, not to mention the kits designed to make it amphibious for beach landings. Sure there’s still an argument to be made about it’s short comings, however it did it’s job very well and was often punching out of its weight class and still being able to leave the fight under its own power.

It all comes down to the fundamental problem Germany had. No time. The economic crisis the Nazis stopped, which was one of the major problems coming out of WW1 and the great depression and what got them a lot of support, was stopped by basically committing to war from the get go. The only way for the big mustache man to actually keep his promises on the surface was that he always calculated with being able to make up for shortages of money or resources by simply conquering another country, taking all their stuff and making up for his own deficits. That meant he needed war to come pretty quick and he had to succeed at every step of the way. So anything that could seemingly overwhelm an enemy and placate his supporters was pursued. Going from zero to trying to take over Europe within a few years is just not an environment that allows one to carefuly test and improve upon things. If you can't afford to lose ever, you have to make big bets.....it works for a while but not forever and that is why Germany lost. They couldn't possibly make up for the shortage of ressources that they never had the time to accumulate and build upon. Of course there is more that goes into it but that is one of the most fundamental problems that made victory unlikely at best from the get go.

So i gotta call out LP on the T-34 , many and most things about it were ADDRESSED and FIXED! The big one and the most important one not being mechanical but that of crew training WHICH THEY FIXED during 42 going into 43 by literally rotating all of their veteran and new tank crews out to factories and having them study tank design and maintenance right there were their tanks were being made. After that the loses from mechanical breakdowns of the T-34 and other tanks became almost non existent other then the average that most similar machines like the sherman had , thats just one of the insane things the USSR managed to do in the middle of a damn war and it doesn't get nearly enough credit or is outright ignored by pseudohistorians like LP.
@intlon4299
@intlon4299 Жыл бұрын
What about its heat treating issues and that it was very susceptible to getting stuck in the mud? The T34 was a quite good tank for its time by the end of the war, but it still had many issues as LP pointed out.
