1996 was my Lolla. The more time goes by, the more special it feels to have seen Devo, the Ramones, Soundgarden and the Screaming Trees on the same day.

Glad I found this - I was at the 1996 Rockford Illinois Lollapalooza with Cheap Trick as a surprise band. It was sweltering hot and it was taking a long time for Metallica to start so the audience started throwing hundreds (thousands?) of empty water bottles around the mosh pit and main stage.

I went to 3 different La La’s in the 1990s with my high school buddies, I must say I was probably to old, my early 30s to really enjoy the Festival. I will say that Ministry was the loudest band I have ever heard in my life, my ears rang for 3 days. I left the Rockingham Festival early, the heat was unbearable, and I could see that the Festival had run its course. I am glad Chicago picked it up. I am not sure how many of those bands are still together today, in 2025. The music for me was a live in the moment style of who could be more insane and loudest, perhaps the Chili Peppers and Green Day are the only bands still on the road. Each decade seems to have its own music experience. Good times but this traveling circus could not continue. Too much of everything. Great video a nice snapshot of a period of time when music festivals were over the top. Cheers 🍻

Some where around the 19:00 mark. Bands saying they weren’t going to do it because it’s not alternative anymore “Metallica is headlining. “ “oh ok, sure count us in.” Yeah with Metallica headlining that in 1996 it had been a good two or three years since Metallica toward North America. I think they did this even before they went on their own tour. Metallica headlining lollapalooza meant a lot of concert tickets being sold.

Going to concerts in the 90’s was just a different experience. I don’t really care for these big super three day festivals where they have 500 bands in a quarter of 1 million people. I don’t need to be around a quarter of 1 million people ever in my life. That and 90% of them aren’t even living in the moment there just out there with their cell phones recording it. Whatever happened to just getting fucked up and experiencing live music?
