Incredible tool restoration or a rusty old hand drill I found at the thrift store with several other hand tools. While cleaning it up I discovered it is a Millers Falls Tools No. 77, made in the U.S.A..

Great job " I've just restored a Fleetway clipper chest hand drill from 1951 ex mod military issue. I get hand tools and restore, using them is the ultimate in any restoration as I prefer the old ways when I was a apprentice many years ago!

I did a partial restoration on my North Brothers 1545. I disassembled it cleaned it thoroughly with wire brush on the bench grinder. Straightened a few parts, made a side handle out of a file handle and did everything accept paint it. It works like brand new. I store several screwdriver bits in the handle as well as a quarter inch drive adapter to use as a nut driver. I have several other antique bit drivers that I love and use that I've also cleaned up and lubricated and left in fairly original condition. They are part of my cordless tool collection.

I like the 'radish' look the oil gave the handles. gave it a "well used, but taken care of" look. my favorite video so far. awesome job.

I’m actually mid restoring it right now. Mines a little different but I’m restoring all the tools from my grandfather, I only got a drill, and a few screwdrivers but they all look really good so far and I’m happy with how it’s coming along

Thanks for this video. I really needed some idea on restoring hand drills. My grandfather passed away before I was born. My father passed away last year, so I have inherited some of my father’s and all of my grandfathers tools. They are nice and rusty. After watching your video, I definitely have a starting place on restoring them. Thanks!

Just began restoration on a very similar hand drill (Miller Falls Tools No. 315). The chuck looks almost identical to mine; it's a two part chuck, with a seam right at the bottom of the knurling. If you clamp it in a vice and use the "slots" to get good torque on it (using a file, or similar long bar), it should break loose. The internal mechanism in mine was very simple, easy to re-assemble.

Nice project. I purchased the very same drill at the local swap meet for a few bucks last week for a similar restore. It's in pretty good shape and it was nice to see the disassemble to prep for doing mine. I agree on the linseed oil finish. It looks best on those old wood parts. Thanks for sharing. Good job.

I know they call these egg beater drills but they do so much more than just drill bits. With adapters you can do almost anything with them. Even beating eggs. 😀

I’m trying to restore the same drill and am currently not able to get the handle pin out with a punch and hammer. I’m considering drilling it out like you did. How long did that take and do you need to use oil while drilling? Thanks. Great video

Very nice! I have one that needs the same treatment but I was hesitant to disassemble it that much. Now I know it can be done! I sometimes use the mineral oil sold for use on butcher blocks and cutting boards on my old handles. It seems to soak in really well, and on some lighter colored woods, it adds a translucent element, similar to a fine gun stock. I also like to leave traces of the original stain in many cases. It keeps the piece looking more vintage.

Hey, buddy. I love these old tools. I thought you might have some trouble when you had to sacrifice that pin. I was able to save mine, but still had the trouble getting them back into place as they have a slight curve or arc that is directional specific. Once I saw it, it fit like old blue jeans. I have no idea if that was original, or if they develop over time. Either way, good show. I'd take those screws and that chuck and polish them though. Such a nice piece deserves that little bit of brilliance. Keep going man. These kids need to see that fixing the stuff that fixes stuff is a skill too!

Thanks Will. I was bummed I had to drill it out too. I wasn’t sure what the construction was and I know there are plenty of things on this drill but could do better. I have a few more complex hand drills in cue that I want to give A+ treatment too and this was almost a practice for both the restoration and for video editing. As I’m new to the video editing I’m still sorting how and what I do and record.

What kind of paint did you use for the blue and red? It looks really cool. I'm about to restore a Plumb hatchet that used to be black (except the edge) and I'm not sure if I'll paint it or not. Love the vids!

Good useable restoration. It’s worth taking the chuck apart though, the three little hooks that the ‘teeth’ hang on are really fine and can corrode and break, the slot on the end will not be easily moved by a large screw driver, use a long bar of metal that is a snug fit in the slot and persuade with a large hammer. Worth doing when you have 10 minutes to spare.

Just to point out to people, this type of restoration destroys the collectable value of the tool. Old tools are supposed to look old. The patina is part of the value. If come across a valuable tool, you want to do research before you do this type of complete restoration.
