OVERHEATING? This is how to take apart a restricted (clogged up) radiator and clean it for reuse. Never say the task is to great. Put Jesus Christ first and always keep him at the center of it all.

I'm 61 years old now. When I went to mechanic school back in the 70's we learned how to rod a radiator. There was a tool much like the one you improvised. I always considered a mechanic as someone who could repair the parts that were broken, and not just replace them. I use to rebuild my power steering pumps, water pumps, alternators, starter motors, radiators, distributors, and other components. You are right corporate America has us trained, and right where they want us. (in the box) I salute you!!

Thank You Sir. I learned from the Old Skool guys like your self and I was taught to rebuild everything just like you say. I am grateful and honored to have learned from those who have learned the way you have. There is a sense of pride that is unmatched when you take on a task and achieve great results without taking it to corporate America. Thank you for being a part of the DIY, never giving up, HANDLE IT the Old School way mentality. God Bless You.

When was the last time you could buy bearing and brushes for an alternator or generator? Thats 99% of what ever went wrong with either. These days is spend over a hundred for either a new or rebuilt one instead of say 20 or so to solve the problem. :)

I think it's funny that regular people expect us to know stuff like this. I learn from this dude, too. People will often ask me, "What did you go to school for? Mechanical Engineering? So you work on cars? Can you take/fix 'x'?" And then I look like such a lier when I have to tell people that I'm not a mechanic, when my project truck is pulled far into the driveway.

I have NEVER seen someone remove a radiator end tank on a plastic/alum radiator. These are generally considered throw-aways these days, which drives me crazy. I've done something similar on Subaru top mount intercoolers, which are similar in design. But I've never seen this, and its awesome! Your work ethic is fantastic, and I like that you have a message to spread. While I don't have a deeper message, my drive for putting videos on is to help people to not be afraid to dive in and try to fix things themselves. On small radiators like that, I have a shallow pan a little bigger than the radiators. $5 at Walmart I get a quart of CLR. Put the radiator in the pan, pour in the CLR and work it with a firm bristled brush and a thin, flat metal rod like you use. speed it up quite a bit.

This clogging is the result of using tap water instead of distilled water with a 50% mix of coolant or in cold areas a 100% coolant use. Tap water is usually full of minerals with heat and time become solids. Lime away would probably help remove some of it and also muratic acid, but carefully mixed as to not hurt the aluminum. Again, great video. saved yourself lots of money. God Bless you and your loved ones.
@1970PMD
@1970PMD 7 жыл бұрын
theory816 thats assuming that the radiator contained coolant. looks to me the only coolant that radiator ever had was the factory coolant. over the life of the car and multiple repairs that coolant was replaced by tap water only, containing minerals that turn to exactly what we see in the video. yes coolant does brake down, but does not sludge with minerals unless added by tap water.

I watched this video seeking advice on diagnosing a clogged radiator. What I ended up watching was an inspirational video on life. This is now my favorite mechanic on KZbin. Also, a nice way to look at things like this is, how much would the repair cost if a shop did it? A good example would be when I rebuilt my motor from the crank up. A new motor plus the cost of installing it with all the bells and whistles would have cost around 5k. That's what a few places quoted. It cost me $1,700 for the rebuild and I did all the work myself (except for boring out the cylinders and dunking the head). The job in total was about 30 -40 hours of work (it was my first rebuild). This included a new clutch system as well. If I subtract $1700 from $5000, I end up with $3300. $3300 divided by 40 = $82.5/hr. So you can look at it two ways. The first, I saved $3,300 doing the rebuild myself. Or, you can look at it the second way and I can say I made $82.50 an hour to do the work. Anyway, thanks for the videos.

I use to do this to radiators in the 60's and 70's. In those days they were all copper held together with solder. You just used a propane touch or a gas welding rig if you had one to melt off the solder and both the top and bottom just fell off when you got them hot enough. Rod out the core then simply solder the top and bottom back on using flux and acid core solder. To fix a leak in a tube you just cleaned it up and soldered the leak shut. To leak check a radiator just grab an old tube and cut 2 circles out of it big enough to fit over the hose tubes. Put them in place with a couple hose clamps. Next take an old radiator cap and dril la hole in it big enough to pull a tubeless tire valve stem through ot or find a metal shreader valve thats held in place with 2 nuts. Stick a bicycle pump on the valve stem and pump up to say 25 or 30 pounds. Drop in the bathtub or horse trough to look for bubbles. Never tried it with the aluminum and plastic ones.

And I would never pay even 20 cents an hour because I would do it myself. Its all in how much you value your time and the intelligence needed to fix things. Even these days I fix things that can be fixed before simply tossing them and buying new.

(Aka a flat head screwdriver, a ratchet, spanners, hammer, and a couple of grips/pliers) thanks for the tip on the wiper blades ! Keep up the good work !

Looks like cooling system had a leak and someone put some sealant in there. This is very common when people attempt an easy fix. BTW, never use water only in the cooling system unless in emergencies. This may cause premature failure of the seal in the coolant pump. Use distilled water only for mixing with antifreeze. Also, check for leaks after the air was purged from the system and the radiator cap reinstalled. The radiator cap keeps the system pressurized to increase boiling point, like in a pressure cooker (same principle). BTW, In an emergency, you can put some mustard powder into the radiator to sell minor coolant leaks. This will get you to point B but it's not good for cooling system.

Thanx man! Unique way of sharing and drawing attention to the word of G-d! Gonna be taking apart my backhoe rad in the morning, fixing some leaking lines and cleaning it oldskool. Rad shop wants $600 plus another hundred in taxes. Will solder up leaks in lines and send you every cyber Blessing. Men of G-d need to come down offa pulpits and show how His wisdom can benefit by working with your head and hands! Ontario Canada on a small woodlot farm trying to get by . . .

Sub'd last week, so glad I found your channel, man, ive been told my trucks radiator was clogged, but I didnt want to buy a new one incase it was a head gasket, without proper tools, and being disabled, funds are limited, so, your channel showing me how to fix something rather than replace something is more than wonderful. Thank you.

You really think Im gonna stop talking about Jesus Christ because you say so? You cant even come close to stopping me from speaking about the Gospel of Jesus Christ my man, Jesus Loves You but dont test him for to long. Remember this, PRIDE COMES BEFORE THE FALL. Thanks for the comment.

+gdcskates You ain't even close to being a God. All that chest flexin and tough talk is just a lost, empty guy trying to sound like a boss with a prideful heart, but remember this, you still gotta stand before the boss one day and stick this in your dome, GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE! DONT GET IT TWISTED.

+gdcskates If you stepped to me over 3 years ago with that tough talk I would have laid you out right where you stand. Don't think just because Im a Christian your gonna just come and try to flex your prideful muscle and expect me to let you walk all over me. Im not even close to being soft. You came and disrespected my God on my channel so I had to get firm with you. If you can't handle being handled and getting you atheistic bubble popped then don't come at me with all that dead, vain, empty anti Christ talkin out the side of your neck troll talk. You hide behind a computer screen and try to impose your mockery about God on my channel? I don't play them kid games! your a grown man quit acting like you call the shots around here cuz you ain't running NOTHING but your mouth behind your keyboard. You don't know nothing about me except what I put out. but know this, all that gum bumpin and hot air your blowin out the side of your neck is just a man who is hurting and mad at God. You will never change the fact that God exist and all that mockery you aim towards God is just pushing you farther away from him that's why your heart is growing colder. I'm a very firm man I don't take nothing from nobody, I tell it like it is and I don't try to win your admiration. I going to spread the gospel no matter what you or anybody says because I was once on your level but far worst. I'm not perfect and I know my response offended you but like I said, I tell it like it is and if you don't like it then it was meant for you, because God is probing your heart but sometimes you gotta get checked because your pride is blinding you. no I'm not perfect and you pushed some buttons so I gotta get firm with you because you ain't gettin off the hook that easy disrespect my Jesus like that . and you can stop all that subtle great job stuff cuz once your disrespect God like that it puts you on a whole different level. Quit gettin it twisted and snap out of that humanistic, darwinism man is god lies you've been programmed to believe.
@oldskoolfunk71
@oldskoolfunk71 8 жыл бұрын
+gdcskates Your heart is defiled brother and growing colder each time you mock God, but God is not mocked , that means your getting nowhere and cant even put a dent on the supreme power and authority of God. Your psychoanalysis of me is way off, when did i say i was an XCon?. Your assumptions and over thinking is what gets you in trouble. I see you have to resort to belittling words and disrespectful comments to make yourself feel better about who you are. You picked the wrong dude to try to use those tactics on brother. None of that fazes me at all, it just let's me know that I'm dealing with a man who is lost, troubled deep inside and is not sure of his identity so he has to claim he is a god. That doctrine you hold on to is a false doctrine called humanism and its one of the most twisted ideologies out there to think a man is or can become a God. You can't get me to hate you my man my anger issues have been defeated through the power of JESUS CHRIST, but I will be firm with you, (I'm saved not soft) because i don't bow down to no man and never will. Your in a very dangerous position with God brother but know this, it is no accident your heart is being probed by God. Let me remind you that YOU will stand before Gods judgment and YOU will be held accountable for every idle word and ungodly deed. Some say why would i waist my time on continuing to comment but you are not a waist of my time and because God is graceful and does not want YOU gdcskates to die in sin God is not willing that any man should perish in sin. That's why us Christians who have been pulled out of the dark lifestyle of wrecklesness by the Lord Jesus Christ are sent back to preach the gospel and you ain't stopping it. Get your head straight and get it right with Jesus Christ and REPENT before your time is up. Gods grace is upon you, that means you have an opportunity right now to be saves because tomorrow is not promised brother. Acts 2:38 Repent and be baptized.

Oldskool you're such a good dude brother. I love watching your videos not only because I'm always learning something but because I know there's a humble, genuine person with integrity making them, who's trying to help other people. Not easily found these days, especially with all the empty CRAP elsewhere on KZbin and everywhere else in the world. No one fixes anything anymore, and even fewer make an effort to help others. I hate throwing stuff away, I like to fix everything. Sure sometimes it's easier to replace a part. For instance I paid $5 for a brand new radiator off Ebay for my old Taurus. But isn't it great to know how to fix something if you have to or if you can't find it for cheap? You're a great teacher and influence and I hope your positivity and great example reaches as many people as possible. God Bless brother and keep up the great work.
