Shamus Case II. Shamus was a good Berzerk type game with flip screen adventuring action. But Shamus Case II radically modified the formula into something truly unique. It mixed things up with platforming screens and weird shooter screens. The shooter screens were a weird shooter/breakout hybrid that set Shamus Case II in a class all its own. The platforming screens gave you the unusual - for its time - ability to maneuver left/right in mid-air. This is standard now, but back then it was a cool twist.

Can't speak about the C64 games... But Titus had a strange period between 1992 and 1994 o4 95, not sure, where they actually made some good games. Crazy Cars 3 on the Amiga is very solid. They made The Blues Brothers, Titus the Fox, Quik The Thunder Rabbit and probably more I can't remember (I know they made a few SNES games on that period too). But then they went back to do the usual crap they always did.

Nice list! I wonder how many of these sequels were written by the same person or team as the previous one. Sometimes a new person or team making the game is all it takes to make it better, though it's not always the original author(s) fault as games were often rushed to meet some deadline etc.

Crazy Cars 3 really was a case of Titus in actual good game shocker. I fluked it with both Chase HQ and Chase HQ2 - I decided to go with Chase HQ for my Speccy +2 not the C64.. The following year I saw previews for Chase 2 (but no reviews) and took the risk of pre-ordering it. Thankfully it was a massive improvement. Lot of love for Double Dragon 2 as well but pretty much every home port of the original was awful anything was going to be better the fact that it was actually great fun was a bonus
@AmbersKnight3 ай бұрын
Good video as always and can't really argue with any of the choices. I always felt bad for C64 owners with Battle Command because whilst all the other computer versions, including the Speccy and CPC, were 3D gamed all the way, C64 owners got shafted with that 2D overhead version which just looked abysmal. As for Amiga games, Crazy Cars 3 is so far ahead of its previous 2 its surprising they are part of the same series, as the first 2 were awful and then ehte 3rd comes along and it is such an improvement.

Amiga - Xenon vs Xenon 2: Megablast; Speedball vs Speedball 2; Kick off vs Kick Off 2; Dune vs Dune 2; Super Cars vs Super Cars II
@FabledGentleman3 ай бұрын
Dune 2 is not really a sequel to Dune. They were in production at the same time, by two different studios, and fun thing, Cryo Entertainment didn't even know about the other game being made at first. Dune follows the 1984 movie very closely, as Dune 2 does not what so ever, it completely builds the world of Dune from the ground up. It is by most people maybe, considered to be a sequel just because of the naming, but they are in fact not related in any way.
@rafaellima832 ай бұрын
Xenon 1 is a better game than Xenon 2. Xenon 2 is a bad shoot'em up with awful level design, really choppy, a stupid "scroll backwards" mechanic, a shop (those rarely ever work well in shmups).... but an excellent soundtrack. Xenon 1 is an average shoot'em up with some interesting gameplay mechanics and a decent framerate
@cressie1762 ай бұрын
@@rafaellima83 We disagree. I loved Xenon 2. It wasn't perfect, suffering from fixed attack patterns and slow down, but the gameplay was still decent, the weapons, soundtrack and graphics were all fantastic, the bosses huge.
@rafaellima832 ай бұрын
@@cressie176 you didn't have access to shmups on arcades or other systems back then? Of course we can disagree and we can keep arguing and going nowhere, this is the internet, hehe :D But I had an MSX 2+ (not a C64) before going to the Amiga. I had Xenon on the MSX (a ZX Spectrum port), and I heard all the hype for Xenon 2 on the Amiga. When I got (pirated disks), I swear, I thought that was a leaked beta or something, I couldn't believe *that* piece of garbage was the game people hyped so much. I had better shmups on the MSX. What's even more weird... the Amiga already had Hybris and Battle Squadron by then. (I think also R-Type and Silkworm was already out?). There were good shoot'em ups on the system, there was no reason to overhype that trainwreck except, of course, every Bitmap Brothers game was extremely overrated for some reason.
@cressie1762 ай бұрын
@@rafaellima83 I recall Hybris being released slightly later, not sure about the others but it doesn't really matter. Datastorm was also around that time too. Despite there undoubtedly being better shmups I don't think anything on the Amiga matched Xenon 2 for sheer spectacle once you acquired some of the power-ups. I still enjoy playing it now and I think it's a hell of a lot better than the original.
