I grew up with a C64 and it's an absolute delight seeing how so many amazing games are being developed for it right now, some of them showing that the C64 could do so much more than we ever imagined. the only true limitation or problem I see with the C64 is that it only uses one button. but a new controller with remapped keys into the buttons could solve that. I hope new developers start using that resource.
@oldstylegaming Жыл бұрын
Thats already a thing mate, ojbeez for one makes custom joysticks where a button can be mapped to up for jump
@TRX3037 ай бұрын
Actually you can add (at least) two more individual fire buttons (via the potentiometer lines). These have been used in some software already back in the commercial days of the C64, for example for the C64 mouse and a few games too (mostly 2 buttons there). Today there are 2 button patches for a number of classic games, but some of the more recent releases support up to 3 buttons from the start (like e. g. MW Ultra, Super Mario Bros.). There are some recent controllers that have that featres for the C64 available for purchase. I use a wireless dedicated gamepad that has those 3 buttons plus a fourth one for remapping the joystick up positiion.

Thats what I love about OSG; the ability to put aside nostalgia and make a video like this is not always easy! ;)
@Flatstick Жыл бұрын
Great video as always OSG! I can't go past the fact you put Impossible Mission in 29th especially considering some of the games you put ahead of it. It's your list of course but I have to make my case for Impossible Mission as it truly is an exceptional game on the platform: A) there's more depth than you think. It generally has two major gameplay modes: 1) exploration/map-completion/puzzle piece collection. 2) Passcode deciphering. Working towards these goals is really rewarding, and here are a few other things that make it great: - while the room designs don't change, almost everything else in the game is randomised making it infinitely re-playable. - first class graphics, sounds, player and robot movement and animation, and gameplay mechanics It is hard, but you can beat the game repeatedly using the following strategy once you can reasonably control how often you die: 1) you need to collect 36 puzzle pieces to win the game, keep exploring the map until you collect them all 2) forget about solving the Passcode until you've got them all 3) Search each room as much as you can without dying too much (this is the key because dying takes time away from your deadline to win) 4) if a room is too hard to get to all the places to search without dying too much, use snoozes, or make a note of the room's position on the map so you can come back later with a snooze 5) Once you've finished the map, count your puzzle pieces and see how many you need to get 36 6) start going back over the rooms you marked until you get all 36, but go to the password rooms and collect more snoozes on the way (you should have noted these too, including Attombender's room) 7) Once you have all the pieces, start solving password letter puzzles - each letter in the password has four pieces that fit together. If you complete one but it doesn't give you the letter, keep changing its rotation until it clicks. Those pieces will now disappear from your inventory. 8) Once you have the password, go unlock Attombender's room for the win. Sounds complicated? Well that's what I mean, more depth than you think. Such a great game! Great vid again.

Cool picks! Interesting lack of CRPGs, a genre which dominated the "AAA" game scene here in the USA. Also interesting that one (mostly) BASIC game made it into your list, but that's not TOO surprising considering how great Pirates is. CRPG development has continued in the modern era, which is a bit surprising considering the vast amount of effort they require (compared to other types of game). I mean ... the amount of effort put into something like Ultima IV Remastered or Eye of the Beholder is mind numbing, not to mention the effort required to put together an original CRPG of significant scale. I'm not into most platformers, so I'd easily slot in Ultima IV over many in your list. (Personally, I prefer the single colored tiles of the original, over the more Ultima V style pixel art of Ultima IV Remastered.)
@El_Guapo74 Жыл бұрын
I agree with you with rpg's as the C64 greats. Its almost impossible to compare Bard's Tale , Pool of Radiance and my personal fav Ultima 5 to any thing arcade like. You need a separate list, one I'd like to see cause lists like this let me see all the good stuff I missed
@IsaacKuo Жыл бұрын
@@El_Guapo74 There are a ton of mostly overlooked CRPGs and proto-CRPGs. Of course, they aren't as good as the big popular ones, but they can still be interesting for what they were. The big problem with trying to compile a list of them is that they usually take some deep diving to even see if there's something special or noteworthy to them. It's often not obvious how to "get" what you're supposed to do or what the interesting challenge is.

Mail Order Monsters should have made the list. It was ahead of its time for features. The first game to have character development/upgrades (multiple creatures for each player name) that could be saved for future games and usable for both two player or single player. I've been finding a lot of people online who deny that NTSC-based developers contributed anything to the C64, so it's interesting that you have 10 NTSC-made C64 games on your top 30. If you discount the newly-made games (11 of the 30) it's actually 10 out of 19, a very narrow majority, that were developed in the USA and Canada on your list! So that goes to show that you are being impartial at least in that respect.

some good ones here, gunship and pirates were always favorites. a pity there were no rpgs. the dnd goldbox games were heaps of fun. for pvp we always played knight games or spy vs spy

Great updated list. Many games i would have in my same list, and that first place would also be the same, and maybe the first place could be beaten if we ever got a sequel! 😄😉

Slicks was a great game. I did have to connect my Mega Drive pad to the C64 to play it though!

My first game was a game called Booty, set on a pirate ship. Top games for me were as follows Last Ninja, Platoon,(which came with a second tape that had Smokey Robinson tracks of my tears)Terminator, everyone’s a wally, Rocky horror picture show, beach head, Friday the 13th, chiller(rip off of Michael Jackson’s thriller video, cauldron (you played a flying witch on a broomstick, Raid over Moscow, jumpstart and also a game by skips(yep the crisps) where you played a character called clumsy Colin , Frankie goes to Hollywood The list is endless, on a side note I’m sure IK+ was originally called exploding fist And who can forget Daley Thomson’s decathlon where the loading screen looked like he had a stroke 😂

Even with the Psytronik titles included (no Knight & Grail?), I cannot take any list lacking Armalyte, Retrograde, Creatures, Mayhem in Monsterland or Wizball too seriously.

Wonderful selection of games, though it's all very subjective - I have my own favourites that I'd add (e.g. Whizball, Exploding Fist II, Nebulous, Elite, The Hobbit etc etc). A fantastic computer all round, no wonder it sold very well.
