"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by British political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who later became his wife. At the time, the couple were lovers, although MacColl was still married to Joan Littlewood. Seeger sang the song when the duo performed in folk clubs around Britain. During the 1960s, it was recorded by various folk singers and became a major international hit for Roberta Flack in 1972, winning Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Billboard ranked it as the no. 1 Hot 100 single of the year for 1972.

Lyrics:
The first time, ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and the stars
Were the gifts you gave
To the dark, and the endless skies
My Love
And the first time, ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hands
Like the trembling heart
Of a captive bird
That was there, at my command
My Love
And the first time, ever I lay with you
I felt your heart so close to mine
And I knew our joy
Would fill the earth
And last, til the end of time
My Love
And last, 'til the end of time
My love
The first time, ever I saw
Your face
Your face
Your fa-ace
Your face

This reminds me of the first time I ever saw my wife's face. She was 12 and I was 14. 5 years later we were married and that marriage lasted 53 years until God called her home May 1, 2018. I love you still Wanda and will as long as I live.

This song speaks to the deep love I have for my partner of 35 years. I was fortunate enough to marry my high school sweetheart, she was 14 and I 17. I was an uninvited guest to her birthday party. We never met or saw each other before that night. I remember to this day the first time ever I saw her face; it was love at first sight, and even after so many years together as husband and wife, her beauty both inside and out, melts my heart. We opened the dancefloor to this song on our wedding night under the stars in a tight embrace, we danced together, eyes closed with tears of joy flowing. Thank you Ms. Roberta Flack and everyone involved in writing and producing this song. Mutual love can be so beautiful.

On my parents wedding day my mom walked down the aisle to this song. To this day this song makes me cry because my parents were the epitome of this song. They met Dec 25, 1973, got engaged Fed 14, 1974 and were married on Aug 17, 1974 and were married for 25 days shy of 25 years when my dad passed away. My mom never remarried and always wore her wedding ring and eventually got an eternal wedding ring of my dads name in his eye color on her ring finger. Their love was so pure, whole and perfect. They loved each other beyond their souls. When my mom passed away a year ago, my dads spirit was there waiting to take her home with him and I know I’m my heart that they have cherished every day in the past year together. This song describes their love perfectly and makes me ball my eyes out to this day. I wish songs today could be this powerful.

I've watched so many covers of this from Celine to George Michael to Jennifer Hudson and no one comes close to the original. Especially during the verse where Roberta floats from high to mid to low to mid and back to high. Its SO effortless where other singers either struggle or avoid it altogether by switching the key. She's simply one of a kind.

Roberta Flack is one of the greatest musical prodigies ever to have lived on this earth. Her singing voice was beautiful and distinctive, her songwriting was impeccable, and her piano playing was just beautiful. She is now 87 (as of this post) and suffers from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease), and can no longer sing. But fortunately, her wonderful music will love on forever.

I had heard stories about the love of my life for days from his friends while HE was out of town. I was entranced by these stories and thought I can't wait to see this man who sounded like Bogart personified. When he finally came walking towards us, he lived up to my imagining and more. This song in 1972 gave me chills and still does. I hope he has had a good life wherever he is and I will always love the time we had together. It would not have lasted I know. But the passion was overwhelming. Thanks for the memories STP.

This song always, forever always, reminds me of my wife who passed away unexpectedly twenty years ago. It was uncanny, I was in a restaurant and she was a waitress. And I heard, "Can I take your order?" I turned and to this day I cannot find the words to describe, when our eyes met, the instant love we both felt. For me, the whole world stood still for a long second and for her, she turned into a frozen statue. So I am shedding tears again......and all I can say, " I'll see you soon, Loredonna....I love you."

The greats of Roberta Flack, Dionne Warwick, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Gladys Knight, and Aretha Franklin, they don't make em like this anymore and plus the music industry doesn't give them the credit of being acknowledged at Music awards for being the pioneers who paved the way. A beautiful song for ballards they don't write like anymore

A very special song for my wife and me. We married in November 1972, and she wanted to do something special for my birthday - one week later. She learned this song on her guitar and played and sang it on my birthday. Best present ever. 50 years later and it still brings tears to my eyes. We saw Roberta in Bangkok in the early 90's and her singing this song will always be so memorable. It doesn't get any better!

ROBERTA FLACK SHOULD BE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. SHE WAS INSANELY UNDERRATED.-She made songs that NO ONE could sound like/imitate/duplicate/replicate, or copy. She was an extrememely good music teacher of inner-city students in Washington, D.C. Her piano skills were top-notch. She was also INSTRUMENTAL in the upcoming, and rising of, Peabo Bryson, Donny Hathaway, and Luther Vandross.-Believe it or not, we may have NEVER HEARD OF THOSE THREE MEN, HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR ROBERTA FLACK.-Period

I saw her sing in the 70s in a little place called Mr. Henry's in DC. She cast a spell that captivated. Lots of people smoked then and they were listening so engrossed that the ashes would literally burn down to their fingers. She was so powerful, quietly powerful, it hit that deep place inside, where you are completely captivated. She sang reality deeper than everyday life, and it always hit home.
