I remember seeing this in school as a young girl and afterward, each girl (we were separated from the boys to view the movie) was given a little "personal Product kit" that looked like a little gift that included this pamphlet and an assortment of napkins (pads) and tampons. All the boys were jealous because we got "gifts" and they got to watch a football reel. The girls were so excited that we couldn't wait to use our little kits! Little did we know once that little "gift" from Mother Nature arrived it was a life of Hell for 30 years! Great memory now all that hell is over. Where is the Disney film for Menopause?

Why is everyone saying this was an informative video? It doesn’t even mention what might be the single most important thing to prepare them for - the fact that they will bleed. If I saw this before I got my first period without other information, I’d be terrified when I started seeing blood. Pads, tampons or any other sanitary product aren’t brought up at all (though tampons were pretty controversial in the 1940s, so that’s not surprising). Sure, this has scientific information, but that’s not what kids need to know before they’ve had a period - they need to know how to deal with it, and they need to know they aren’t about to die. I’m not saying it’s completely useless, but it definitely doesn’t do nearly a good enough job at explaining menstruation, so I don’t know why people are acting like it is. It’s dated at best.

As humorous as it might be to watch this now in 2018, it's important to remember that it was absolutely groundbreaking in 1946. There was still a lot of negative stigma and misinformation about periods that at the time (and previous decades) were very mainstream and common. Women's health wasn't talked about and a lot of this information was kept quiet until the "day of" which wouldn't help anybody. My grandmother told me about how all of this information was considered taboo, gross, or inherently inappropriate when she was growing up. Hell, even TODAY there's still people who think that way. Still though, historically speaking, this is a great piece of history regarding health education! You've got to appreciate it for that at least!

If you were raised in a different environment where periods were a celebrated and a valued part of womanhood, your perception about the sensory experience of menstruating would be more positive, even with all the symptoms. There is no shame in being a biological woman. It's attractive and sexy. The body scents we have are a biologically important part of attracting people. A loved one's scent would be important to you, as yours would be to your loved one, including children being comforted by the familiarity of the smell of you, if you are associated with positive experiences. (Men don't have as strong sense of smell as women. Women are attracted to men who have an immune system that most differs to theirs, so their children have a better chance of a stronger immune system). The human body is extraordinary. Especially the complexity of a woman's body! That definitely includes your body. ✨️ That you are menstruating means that you are probably fertile, and will most likely have a choice if you want children, or not. Some women don't have that option. It's something to be appreciative of. If you think any of your bodily scents don't smell right, and it's not just a matter of personal preference, it's best to see a doctor in case you have an infection. Having a woman's body is certainly an ongoing challenge! But personally, I would rather be a woman than anything else!

It's literally blood exiting the body. Even the body thinks it gross and unneeded, hence the reason it is shed every month. Yes, as gross as they are (like pooping and peeing), it is natural, and the idea overall, is beautiful. Oh my goodness!!! As the mom of a 9 year old daughter who will be turning 10 soon, I can not tell you how incredibly grateful I am for this video!!!! According to the law, it would still be unfair for me to let that out on them. But I think these people might be responsible for the cramps. They're worse some times, than others. Nothing in this movie is 'dated.' All of it is still great advice. Nothing has been proven wrong, since 1946, by 'modern science.' Amazing. Even the part about not feeling sorry for oneself, and still taking care of one's appearance, which "gives one new poise and lifts morale"-great advice in general for anyone! I wish I'd had this vid to show my daughter when she was a pre-teen. It's so well presented and told in a way that's kind, gentle, and just matter-of-fact, without being at all embarrassing. And I would have felt much more comfortable introducing it to her in a home setting, with me, rather than first learn about it in a school classroom. An excellent film, made during the days when Disney was a good and trusted company. 🥰

There is one thing that has changed: This video says it's normal for periods to be irregular for just the first year. However, now they say that they are often irregular for the first several years. My periods were irregular for the first 10 years (until my early 20s), but none of my doctors were concerned about it; they said it was normal for young women.

@@halleyorion There is tons of research on this topic. It seems your Dr used the word “normal” interchangeably for not a medical problem. It’s not common to be irregular for 10 years without a hormone, weight change , or long term illness to be at the root. I am sure they do not want girls to assume and go 10 years without checking with a Dr. I am sure it is possible to be irregular without health issues however 2 to 3 years is the average time before it regulates.

I quite agree! I don't remember which film we 6th-grade girls were shown in 1983, but this one does stand the test of time. It's all just good, sensible, and reassuring advice narrated by a soothing and wise-sounding lady. My friend's daughter got her first period, and her Mom showed her where the feminine products were. The girl said "how nice of you to be prepared for this day". The Mom said, oh these are mine. The girl looked confused and said "from when you were 12?" The Mom said, no it's what I use each month. The girl started sobbing, she thought it was a one time thing! When she realized she would get this every 28 days for 35 to 40 years she was so upset!

As a man I applaud such honest, straightforward and no-frills educational content. Back when my grandmother was alive (born 1928), she used to tell me during her time NO ONE talked about sex or periods. She was absolutely clueless as to how girls got pregnant, which led to her getting pregnant with her first boyfriend at the age of 18. She had no idea what was going on and was shocked to find herself pregnant a few weeks later. That event literally ruined her life and preventer from getting an education, good jobs, etc., since no one would hire a single woman at that time. While all her girlfriends were going to vocational schools, getting good jobs, getting married, traveling the world, etc., she was ostracized by society and ended up babysitting all her friends' kids while they would go on vacation to Europe, etc. According to her, even though she loves her children, getting pregnant at an early age out of wedlock in the 1940's completely ruined her life, and all because she was completely ignorant about sex. So kudos to the makers of this film, however hokey it might look to us today.

I used to get vomiting, diarrhoea, and terrible crippling pain that made me want to die to escape it, on first day of probably most of my periods during my 20s. Actually I just thought that was normal! Maybe it was? Anyway then I got an Implanon contraceptive implant (for its intended purpose to stop pregnancy) and about the same time all those symptoms settled down (coincidence?). I've had an Implanon ever since (replaced at intervals) for about 15 years. Wonder whether it was something abnormal, and whether it would come back without an Implanon? Hmm, this is probably why we need better health education for girls and boys.

I'm 64 and I remember our grade school showing all of the females this same type of movie to explain our body changes and menstruation. They brought us all together in the cafeteria and let us sit at the tables and for at least 30 to 45 minutes we watched and listened. By the time it was over, we all discussed how we couldn't wait to become a full fledged woman! The guys got their own personal male version too. When the first girl in our grade started her period at school, we all(boys and girls) all took a vote for the teacher to let her go home for the rest of the day. We were all so proud of her! She became a full fledged woman that day. Too bad they didn't include a birth control prevention post....cause 5 yrs later, she became the first in our class to get pregnant too. Such is life. She loved babies!

I saw this when I was in private school. I was in 5th grade. Even got the same little handbook! They even gave us a box of pads and 2 menstrual belts. The boys were in another room watching a movie about what happens with their development. As someone who suffers from endometriosis, I'm surprised that a film as old as this made a point to tell their viewers to go to the doctor if they suffer from severe discomfort or migraines. I was never told about those kinds of conditions and had to suffer for 10+ years before I even found out that I was genetically prone to endometriosis and that the amount that I bleed and how badly I hurt and how wildly my emotions swing every which way every month wasn't normal. @@Seashellsbytheseashore21 I was always told that it's normal for women to feel pain during their period and that some women just have heavier periods than others and that its completely normal for things to suck for that week of the month, so I would just suffer in silence because I was told that its what everyone feels and figured I should just put up with it. I wasn't told that there's a limit to how painful/heavy things should be until I was in my early 20s when I was crying to my mum about how the painkillers don't work and she told me how I'm genetically prone to uterine problems from at least 3 different lineages from my immediate family, which lead me to getting an appointment with a great doctor who actually listened to what I had to say and got me on hormone pills and an examination at the hospital. Idk if its because talking about periods and women's health is still a little bit taboo socially speaking or something, but a lot of girls don't get warned about these things in their regular sex ed classes and don't find out until later in life that there's a limit to how much pain/bleeding you should be dealing with.

Therefore, many girls had no idea what degree of pain during a period is "normal" (the actual answer is "virtually none"), so they silently endured levels of pain that should have merited a gynecological appointment or a hospital stay. (Endometriosis is a common culprit in period pain.)

The cartoonography is beautiful and the explanation is sorely needed. I can remember that the boys would be asked to leave the room when stories like this were shown in health class. Menstruation should be taught to both genders. This film was made in 1946 and my mother gave me this same information in 1966. In high school in the 1970s my cramps were disabling. It hurt so much the first two days my thighs ached. I spent my days on the couch with a heating pad. My mother would put a blanket over me if I felt so poorly I didn't want to move. Fortunately in adulthood I hardly had a cramp.

I knew what was happening, but I don't think Dr's really had a good understanding in the 70s why cramps happened. I had a Dr tell me I was lying! True, this was very ahead of its time. Just so you know though, colour in motion pictures happened for animation far, far earlier than it did for live action, so this would already have been in colour. This was because cameras could not yet capture colour, but animation didn't use that process.
