As a convert to frugality a couple of years ago, I encourage anyone who poo poos the idea to check out your beautiful home and your full, happy life. I'd bet you have healthier savings than they do too.

One tip I would like to share. If you have a car payment, when you have paid your last payment, save the amount of the payment in a savings account, every month (you won't miss it, you are already used to living without that money, monthly). You would be amazed how quickly the account grows. I was able to purchase a home, just from saving my car payment for a year and a half! I never finance anything, if I can't afford to buy it, I wait and save. The only payments I have are mortgage, utilities, food, insurance etc. I also pay a credit card, in FULL every month, it's important and convenient to have and use a card, but I also know whatever I charge, I have to pay in full. Great video, thanks.

Thank you, great video! I find thrifted, second hand kids clothes not only saves so much money, but we are able to find better quality name brands that we wouldn't go to the department stores to pay full price. When our 2 girls were teenages, we would give them acylothing allowance and let them go to the mall to window shop to see what they were looking for, then head to thrift store to compare styles and prices. They then had a choice "where" they could buy their own clothes from,,,they always chose the thrift store. They saw they could get what needed, (usually better brands and quality), buy extras, buy books and still have money left over for themselves. Best strategy ever!

Looking back on financial decisions we made in our marriage the one that made the most impact on our senior years was when my husband changed jobs at age 40, had a big increase in salary and we decided as a couple to continue our current budget and lifestyle as it was "good enough". He had the extra money taken from his check and put in a savings plan. We didn't miss what we didn't see and never had. When you are old you never wish you had saved less.

Same here, secondhand first. It is amazing what you can find if you do a little digging. Also, if you want a kitchen gadget, give it a little bit and you will find them used for cheap. People get them for presents and don’t want and you reap the benefit.

Also, even items in retail stores may have been "used" by people trying them on, and who's to say they showered that day, or wore underwear (sorry, grossed myself out just typing that!). Frugal February - I love this theme. My favourite tip was the one about helping others. Really that is the key here in so many ways. Having a frugal mindset really does free us up to focus on the important things which are the people in our life, not the things in our life. Most importantly it is a great gift you are giving to your children in modelling frugality and teaching them to have a healthy relationship with money. Thanks for the wonderful tips. That’s great. I wish my parents were like that. They would not talk about money with my two brothers or myself. Money was a taboo topic in our home. I didn’t know how much they earned, how they spent money, nothing! As a result, l made a lot of money mistakes when l was younger. It wasn’t until my late 40’s that l wised up, paid off my debt, and started living below my means! I’m now debt free and saving for retirement. I’m doing well, but the sad thing is, one of my brother’s never learned what he needed to in order to thrive. I have steered him and his wife to frugal channels, given them books on frugal living...they don’t want to know, so now l just leave them alone. You can’t help everyone!

As always, love what you say. Save first has always been our mantra for 51 years of marriage. We have always bought used things when they fit our life. But new is also good if you pay cash, don’t compromise quality and style and you know it will last. Our coffee table was bought in 1970 with wedding present money. It has made it through three sofas, two kids and 11 moves and is still something I love.

Hilary, your frugality is honorable! I believe frugle means sensible, not cheap! I grew up with this norm, and have lived it in my adult life as well; I'm twice your age, I'm an adult! Even during very prosperous years, we have never been those that, "keep up with the Jones". Designer clothes? Sure, when they pay me to advertise their emblem, lol. I buy big bags of fruit or 3 for one price sale items and then share "thinking of you" boxes with young, single just starting out adults and elderly fixed income friends and family members. These are items they may not have bought because it was too much in bulk or would go bad quickly, like big bags of apples and oranges...but split with several people...all can enjoy a treat. I love to bake homemade sweet breads, cupcakes, cookies etc. ...but don't want to over indulge...so give most of what I bake as little "culinary hugs" to my college age or 20 somethings in my family ...and to elderly friends who love a treat, a visit and a cup of tea. It is a way to check on family, let them feel loved and to keep active baking and doing as I age and adapt to life during covid.

@annw13954 жыл бұрын
First, I must say that I love your home furnishings -- mellow, harmonious, comfortable, peaceful, welcoming! Second: your advice is spot-on, and so needed in these times! But I might add that -- while you are courting / before you ever get married -- have many talks with your potential partner about money, how they spend, how they save, do they save now, etc. Make sure you would approach money management in a similar way, and TOGETHER. Make money decisions together. It won't work if one of you is a saver, and one is a spendthrift.

However, through the years I learned how to create recipes with odds and ends. We only ate out once on the weekends as a family. The kids got to pick which meal. Here where I live there’s a mailbox type box in neighborhoods where people put books they no longer want. So anyone can look and take free books, and when you’re done you can put it back for someone else or keep. I also donated books myself. It’s basically trade, and replenish. Wonderful video Hillary, with great tips and advice! My only disagreement is in not being prepared for the unexpected when it comes to the food for your family. You have a Savings Account, Home Owners Insurance and Health Insurance! You need Food Insurance too because you never know when that Snowstorm keeps you housebound or a Tornado or Hurricane hits and you have lost power for sometimes up to weeks on end. God forbid, perhaps another nationwide shortage only this time it’s not Toilet Paper and Clorox wipes, it’s Food! You are excellent at making sure to eat all the food in your refrigerator and rotate any can goods you have, so I have no doubt you would be able to manage rotating a small emergency food storage of say up to 30 days or so. Something I’m glad I’ve done with all of the scary and unpredictability we’ve experienced this past year!

We are on the exact same page. I implemented almost every tip as a single frugal mom. Now with my boys in their 20s, I am very proud of their attitude of never needing an excess of things and being proud and content with what they have. Another thing I have done is to never subscribe to store emails or read flyers, that way all temptation to purchase items I don’t “really” need has been removed. Also by ordering my groceries online and picking up, I’m not tempted by the extras that are just that 😬. And of course as you do I choose fresh fruits and vegetables at a local market.

Growing up with a frugal mom put me in the same mindset. My hubby came from the mountains of Virginia where having a real floor (not packed dirt) wasn't common. He's a bit of a hoarder but we both now have a house with only our mortgage and monthly bills (electric, gas, etc) I was blessed with parents that every few years would gift me their car ( after my divorce ) so I haven't had a car loan since my first marriage ended. We will have to get a new car in a couple yrs as both our cars are starting to have real problems, my parents are deceased now for the last 5 yrs and their last gift was their 2008 Envoy.

We have learned to enjoy simple dates that don’t cost little to nothing and to set goals with savings as motivation to save more and reach dreams! And sometimes you have to say no to things but sometimes you can just encourage others to think simple like instead of having to go out to eat to spend time together why not have a board game night where everyone brings a treat! It’s all about collecting memories not things! 💕

I was raised on the quote by Boyd K. Packer he was a very wise man. You and your husband are very wise as well. Keep up the great work.

Love, love this. Being 60 now and have being sucked in when younger to all the demonstrations that my family and friends and of coure myself had buying tupperware, home interiors etc. and just collections of things that now I want to get rid of but it's so overwhelming. I dream of being able to be a minamalist but I get so overwhelmed by it all. Thank God my daughter is not like me, she's a bit of a minimalist. Don't get me wrong my stuff is well taken care of but there's just too much of it. Your videos are very helpful and I've been watching the minimalist mom I believe it is so I have been getting motivated but moving alot slower these days not like when I was young, lol. God bless you and your family Hillary, you are such a gem in this world, so many of us learn from you even this 60 year old. God Bless sweetheart. 🙏💞

The second motto I wrote on an index card and I keep it on my fridge...for like years! I’m 66, but still learn every day and I was frugal before it was popular!🤣

Great tips Hilary! My husband and I have been together since we were young too, 16. We try to live this way also, but lately we have been spending way too much, Costco mostly, on things we do not need and this was definitely the reminder I needed to get back on track so thank you for this video 😊

All great tips! I especially agree with doing laundry regularly to keep from buying new clothes. My schedule of washing clothes twice a week makes it so easy to always have options from what I already own. There simply isn't a need for more.

It’s so refreshing to see a young couple making such smart choices. It’s honestly like looking at my husband and myself 20 years ago. I wish all couples would have the same mindset. I pray that my son and his fiancé will make the same wise decisions.😊❤️🙏

Good points and great tips! New clothes at the store have many times been tried on by other people. My teen girls shop almost exclusively at thrift stores for their clothes and get great deals.
