She has a totally unfussy technique which makes everything look easy, and she performs as though she had all the time in the world whatever the tempo. Her pointe work is exquisite, as are her arms. She is is petite but that does not stop her from using the whole stage. Her acting and stage presence are of the highest order. I'm very happy about her promotion and I hope we can continue to enjoy her performances for many more years.

Yes, well said. Clean and calm. Even when her right pointe shoe suddenly dies on her in the 2nd variation. She just soldiers on, keeps her composure, sails her way through single pirouettes, and sells it!

@@elizzy8754 At about 2:33 (your timing may vary), during her hops on point diagonal, you can see the shoe on her supporting foot start to go. It's pretty subtle. But hops like this shoes, since it's your full body weight multiplied by the force of the hop. To spot it, replay the diagonal, and look at the angle of her foot, especially at the big toe. She starts very strong; the shoes are obviously plenty hard, judging by the look of her pointed feet. But as she works the diagonal, she's gradually sinking in her shoe. Then, on the third hop (or fourth, sorry, check it) you can spot a nasty surprise as the shoe collapses at the throat (look at the change in the angle of her ankle). She holds it just fine, although I bet that final hop is basically brute strength and adrenaline. Then she has the entire second half to get through, which she does like a boss and the pro she is. Focusing only on the overall picture, and you'd never guess anything was amiss. But it's not like the woman can't do double turns, as the rest of this video proves decisively. I bet once in her dressing room, she ripped those suckers off and threw them at a wall or something.

Уважаю как умного человека за правильные взгляды на жизнь и семью, она просто молодец, троих деток родила и в такой идеальной форме. Сейчас артистки балета замуж выходят, деток рожают, сочетают творчество и личную жизнь, можно только порадоваться, раньше это было практически невозможно. Леонид Сарафанов вызывает огромное восхищение, танцовщик каких в мире единицы. Счастья их семье.

I also am a fan of Skylar Brant, she was promoted to principal about a year ago, she's young, her drive is amazing and very young. She is extremely warm and kind as well. I have never used the word "perfect" when it comes to ballet, but I feel she is the closest to perfection to me. I'm sure everyone has an Idea of perfection but it's different for everyone. Threw my eyes and my knowledge of ballet, she is by far the best!! Brava!!

@@dancingbluecrane2813 Yes, they are amazing together their chemistry is felt by everyone who has seen them dance together, as a now retired dancer, it's very hard to have much of a romantic life without someone who understands that dance is what comes first, it's our career. I also have dated other men who thought it was "so cute" that I was a ballerina. I didn't like that at all. It's not "cute" it's my life and takes energy that they will most likely never experience, on the flip side, I never wanted to date a co worker, but men in other companies was ok for me. It differs for everyone.

I knew you would make a video for her! You did not disappoint :) I think it is also worth mentioning that Novikova has three children (if I am not mistaken), so she can be very inspiring for female dancers that want to become mothers but are afraid due to the short "perfomance life" of the dancer. Let's hope that she will be dancing more principal roles like odette/odile and nikiya, I cannot think of a role that she wouldn't excel in.

@@TheBunduBallerina Yes, thank you so much! I had never seen her Nikiya! I agree, she is incredibly versatile. I liked her in those roles of course. Maybe if she dances them more often she can find her own unique interpretation/phrasing, like she did with Kitri, which was not "her role" in the beginning. But now, even though I think she is the best Giselle in the world, I still somehow cannot tell which is her best role out of Giselle, Aurora, Raymonda, AND Kitri.

You make a very good point about her being an inspiration for other female dancers who love their career but would also like to have children. She does indeed have 3 children and is married to the wonderful principal dancer Sarafanov. Furthermore, when they dance together, one sees a magical ballet partnership! With their three children, and all the work and dedication needed for such exacting high-profile ballet careers, they must have great organisational skills too. Most admirable!

I'm curious, what is the back story of why it took her so long to be promoted? I put her up there with Osipova and Zakharova as among the best living ballerinas, and I actually think she encompasses the Mariinsky ideal more than anyone. The fact that roles as different as Giselle, Kitri, Aurora, Odette/Odile and Gamzatti are equally stunning is just unparalleled in my opinion.

I absolutely agree with you. Novikova is one of the most accomplished, unique and exquisite dancers of all time, right up there with the best of the best! It is very strange that her rightful promotion took so long coming. The only reason I know of that may have held back an earlier promotion is the fact that she was on maternity leave 3 times. She is a devoted mother as well as an incredible artist.

The reason is well known in Russia. Her husband Leonid Sarafanov was a dancer in the Mariinsky theater, but he decided to leave the theatre, dissatisfied with his position there. So the director Fateyev took revange on Olesia not promoting her. I admire her strength and endurance all these years.

Thank you. They announce the prima ballerina at the end of one of her performances. In Novikova's case, it was after one of her signature roles, "Raymonda". The director comes on stage with flowers & announces the new prima, after which shimmering confetti falls down on Olesya. In Novikova's case, her promotion took very long in coming & she was dancing exclusively principal roles, while other first soloist regularly still perform second to lead roles like Gamzatti, Lilac Fairy, Myrtha, etc. Hope that helps.
