Thanks so much Olga. This is my first venture with roses and I’ve gone a bit mad and bought four. 😮 could you possibly do a video on planting roses in a pot. Thank you. By the way, I love your relaxed and gentle way of teaching. ❤

Thank you so much for this helpful information. I wonder if you could do a similar video on container rose gardening. I have a small patio and have ordered several David Austen roses for containers. Thank you.

Yes, container roses can be tricky and I will definitely do a video on them. Thanks for your suggestion and keep giving me ideas for future videos!

I always learn so much with every video Olga. I only have my David Austin in pots so far. Doing wonderfully, although I am considering getting some Queen of Sweden to use outside our bay window of our living room, like you have, so we see them through the window. I have lots of bluebells (invasive) and leadwort as ground cover in the bed, so I have spring colour and then summer/autumn colour. Can I plant the roses in amongst these plants? I am worried they may suffocate the roses, but trying to remove bluebells is fighting a losing battle. Thanks Olga!
@OlgaCarmody3 жыл бұрын
Hi Milly, roses seriously don't like root competition and effort is needed to keep them and their neighbor plants polite. I don't think that you would be happy to constantly pull out those beautiful bluebells around the root system of your future roses. I mean it is a job, and we have to decide from the beginning if we want to agree to it... I like weeding and do a lot of it in my garden. But, again, it is up to the gardeners to which extent they want to go in fighting weeds and aggressive spreaders. Just know, that your roses can't be left alone in those conditions, they are heavy feeders and will get stressed out from root competition. Hope it helps. Happy Gardening!

@@OlgaCarmody ok, I will find another solution, maybe a rectangular planter directly underneath the window! Thank you Olga! 🙏🏻

Such a great informative video. I have 1 question though, I have a rose that I planted about 4 months ago (Earth Angel) and there is minimal leaf growth and no buds, do you think I can add mycorrhizal fungi to the plant if it's already planted. The rose is in a container and very small. When planted I added Espoma Biotone to it which I believe contains MF.
@OlgaCarmody3 жыл бұрын
Hm, there can be so many reasons our plants refuse to thrive. Yes, you can add mycorrhizae to your already potted rose. It is always better to do it during planting time, but you can not hurt your plant with it if you decide to use it after planting. I would mix it with water or incorporate it into soil and give your rose a good drink. Mycorrhizae can not survive sun exposure, so make sure you incorporate it well. Hope it helps and your rose will decide to live and bloom for you after all.

Is it normal for first year bare root roses to not really repeat flower even if you deadhead and cut back to the first five leaf?
@OlgaCarmody2 жыл бұрын
Oh, yes, my first year shrubs just finished their tiny blooms, don't think they will be blooming again, will see. Keep in mind that climbers might not bloom since they are forming long canes first.

Can we plant bareroot rose in December or January in zone 8b?
@OlgaCarmodyАй бұрын
It can be tricky and failure rate can be high. Your rose might be dormant, soil can be very wet and cold... If there are no other options, make sure that you don't put it into very wet soil, mulch it and watch for the soil not to dry out around your new rose through the end of winter... Good luck!

Great info thank you. Question: three of my older roses are infested with aphids and their leaves are extremely shiny. I used Neem oil and it didn’t work. Do you have any suggestions. I really don’t want to kill bees, worms, etc. thank you Olga
@OlgaCarmody3 жыл бұрын
Hi Norma, With aphids consistent fight is a key. They are not a problem in my garden, but if I see them attacking my beauty roses in spring, I grab my horticultural oil and give them a morning spray, before all the bees are up. They won’t die right away, so wait 2 days and repeat. It is not too difficult unless you have 50 bushes to spray. Strong water spray will knock they out to the ground where they will dye.I don’t like to use any artificial stuff either. Just do spraying in the morning before sun and bees.

What time in the year do you add the fungi? Fall or spring? Are the fungi alive through out the winter in your zone ? Also my rose buds are turning black and dying before they even bloom. What disease they might have? Any suggestions to find out and treat?
@OlgaCarmody3 жыл бұрын
The time to add fungi is at the planting time, fall or spring. As for your rose buds turning black before opening. Look into Botrytis Blight and rose "balling". There is plenty of info there about it. Hope it helps.
