I built the Billing Boats Oseberg a few years back but this looks to be in another league! I might go back and add nails to mine as they are such a distinctive feature of these clinker built hulls. One thing I noticed on my model and on virtually all model viking ships is that when you look at them head on, the stem (and also the stern) seem too thick, in that they seem to continue the same width as the keel. If you look at pictures of the original Oseberg ship head on, the stem seems to be quite narrow and certainly much narrower than most models portray, which to my mind is a big part of why the hull shape looks so graceful. Part of the problem seems to be that manufacturers give the intricate carving for these areas as additional parts to laminate onto the side of the stem and stern posts making them even thicker when I assume the original carving was done directly into the posts themselves.

Hi Olha, Great work as always. Would love to build this model one day. Do you know if Pavel corrected any of the errors in this kit at all please?

Thank you! He has just announced the updated version #3. But on the prototype model, the oar ports remained oriented in different directions. So I don't know how much he fixed the rest of the mistakes!

I am waiting for the Pavel’s 3rd iteration Of the kit. As soon as it’s released I will purchase it. I did not start what I think to be the second iteration. Which I bought about a year ago. I just love the shape of this ship. Will you be using dyes or painting yours.? I think is going try using bismuth.

I think I would have particularly disliked clenching the rivets on the garboards at 1:1. Looks good, and at 1:24, not an item a person can skip over, either.

In the case of OSEBERG, everything is very simple, we have the original in the museum - there is no need to invent anything. By the way, a book with detailed documentation of the ship was recently published. The Oseberg Ship: Reconstruction of form and function (Ships and Boats of the North, 9) by Vibeke Bisсhoff. In the video, I used Vibeke Bisсhoff's doctoral dissertation about OSEBERG. I added a link in the description under the video.

This is Vibeke Bischoff's doctoral dissertation on the Oseberg material. She has just published a book in English where there is a full version of all her research. I'm currently filming the book review and will post it next week or early October. There will be a link in the description below where you can buy it...
