Mr. Sykes is honestly a very underrated Disney villain. He abuses children, beats animals, sicks guard dogs on people and lends money to bums just so he can kill them if they don't pay him back because he finds it funny. He's honestly fairly accurate to the original character he's based on.
@SuperSparrow456 жыл бұрын
Neevkl_7 - I think it has more to do with the movie not doing so great at the box office, nor it being quite as lauded as Beauty and the Beast or Jungle Book. Jungle Book is a lot more dark than Olive Twist and it got 2 live action remakes. It helps that the main character is human. I don't see Oliver and Company translating well to live action since the main cast is almost entirely animals.
@darwincity5 жыл бұрын
@@SuperSparrow45 Thing is, this movie was successful at the BO, since it both paid back its budget AND beat Land Before Time. I think that this movie might not really work as a live-action remake due to its potential cost.

While "Why should I worry" is indeed a catchy song people will always remember from this movie, I have to disagree with it being the only soundtrack that'll remain unforgettable. For me it was just the names of the characters that linked this movie to Oliver Twist. But I don't find this is the Oliver Twist story at all, although I don't remember much of the novel. Fagan was a bad guy, but here he's a neutral-good guy. I think it was Oliver that they wanted to kidnap in the story because he had some inheritance, but I don't remember for sure if they ever did try to kidnap Oliver. In the movie it's Jenny the little girl who's kidnapped. The premise of the Charles Dickens tale was how Oliver ended up being adopted, but here he's adopted early in the movie. Finally although Oliver Dodge and the others are surviving on the street, I don't think they'd ever have tried to encourage Oliver back onto the streets. They might get jealous that they didn't have homes also, but I don't think they'd want to take away Oliver's adopted status if he got it. Here they are jealous that he has a home and try and take him out of it. I am fully opposed to calling this a retelling of the Oliver Twist story.

Hellooooo from the future! It actually took me a few watches to associate the two films with each other. I had actually watched the Disney film before I knew about the Carol Reed one. After I watched the live action film, then rewatched the animated one, I kinda put two and two together. What's surprising in my book is that, between me and my older brother, I'm the dumb one and when I mentioned to him about the two being more-or-less the same he was as bewildered as I was that he didn't know. Also, to Mr. Glasses, how can you say the songs aren't memorable? The opening credits song is one of my favourite Disney songs ever! From the lyrics telling you to keep dreaming to the soft jazz music making us feel calm. It's an astonishing song that I'm surprised a lot more people don't like. Have you seen other animated Walt Disney movies? There are other movies with better songs and characters. For example, the movie made one year later that started off Walt Disney's 'renaissance' age in the '90s: The Little Mermaid. Or what about Rescuers Down Under, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, the Lion King, etc.; all from the past generation about the same time? Or Land Before Time, which both Steven Spielberg and Don Bluth worked on? They teach actual lessons, mostly stay truer to their source material (when there is one), and have more memorable characters. If that's your opinion tho, it's fine, but your claim just seems a bit over the top for a movie which I think is... all right. Maybe you have a lot of nostalgia on this particular movie?
@Zodia1957 жыл бұрын
At the end of the day it's all subjective, I prefer this movie to The Little Mermaid, even though I enjoy the latter's music better, I wasn't a fan of the characters, only Ursula and Eric. I was 8 when the Little Mermaid came out and even as a kid I hated the main character. But hey if we all liked the same thing, than life would be boring.

This movie being so "okay", old, and given the fact that the second golden rule for almost every Disney'k kids movie is "the villian fucking dies horribly", I'm sure I'm not giving away much: THE VILLAN DEATH IS THE MOST HORRIFYING EVER (at least for me, but everyone should agree that it's still HORRIFYING). And funnly enough Disney has A TON of brutal deaths, but man, this felt the most "reallistic" of all: the gangster's dogs fell over the rails and died electrocuted, he himself shit over his pants when he see the train, he fucking explodes, and all felt just meters aways. I can't retell how many nightmares I had because that fucking death.

I think my favorite part of this entire film is Sykes, and what I appreciate is that they did the best they could with what they had to work with. Yes, he wasn't on-screen very long and his goal wasn't grand or epic, and being an ordinary human gangster in a Disney movie may not be that exciting, but I still like him so much; he's completely serious with no annoyingly humorous and cartoonish gangster traits, he's mostly hidden in the dark, he smokes and has a hoarse voice, and I like that Disney took risks and made him look more of a mobster rather than a simple loan shark portrayed as a street thug. But there's more! I think Disney did an amazing job at highlighting his car; when you first see it, the camera zooms in and pans around it to add some epicness to it, we get close-ups of Sykes pushing buttons, pulling the gearshift, and opening the door so that every aspect is explored. It also generally plays a big part in his character arc since he kidnaps Jenny in it and drives the car in the climatic chase scene, and gets run over by a train while sitting in it. Remove the car and Sykes automatically gets less compelling since the luxurious nature of the car in some way reflects Sykes' fortune and role as a mobster. And one last thing! I was always so intrigued by Roscoe and DeSoto since the only dog breed I knew at that point that resembled them was a German Shepherd, but they weren't that; they were Doberman Pinchers and looked so cool, and I immediately wanted to learn more about that dog breed.

I think the critic overlooked how important the advertisements in this film actually are. I get his point, but here's the thing. Oliver and Company is one of the few Disney films to be set in a modern day location. And a very well known location at that. NYC is a very advertisement/marquee filled location, so it makes logical sense to use real world advertisements to make the animation like the real NYC. Take the Coca-Cola ad that we see right in Times Square. Coke has had ads in Times Square since 1920 and as such is an icon of the setting.

Oliver really doesn't get the appreciation it deserves - it really was the beginning of the 90s Disney era, and Aladdin and Lion King never would have happened if Oliver hadn't set the tone for them. Great Mouse Detective still felt like something that could have been made in the 70s.
@obvioushieidude76684 жыл бұрын
Really? I think the opposite is true. I feel that the Great Mouse Detective felt more similar to the Renaissance era movies. It had better animation, better writing, more developed characters, and even some darker elements. Oliver and Company was decent, but nothing spectacular. The animation actually takes a step backwards with that really sketched look of the 60s and 70s, the characters are underdeveloped, the story is rushed, and only a few of the songs are really memorable. The rest are pretty dull. There was potential to make a great film, especially with some of the emotional moments, but I don't think they were fully fleshed out.

I watched this movie a year or so ago because I always wanted to watch it as a kid (I loved animal Disney movies) but never got around to do it. As soon as the opening scene with the view of NY played I was slapped with brute reality of "YIKES. Times sure have changed, alright" at the view of WTC towers. It's been so many years I actually forgot they used to be an iconic part of the landscape once.

One of my favorites from my childhood. If you don’t like it, why should I worry?
