Yes, I agree with several of his perpsectives although one I take issue with is his use of "tribe" when referring to the fanbase of pretty much anyone, be it rogan, shapiro or Peterson. I understand he means their fanbase, and while there are fanbois and loyalists among any content creator, I believe its disengenious to lump them into the "tribe" category. I watch their videos but I dont particularly agree wholesale with any of the aforementioned. The irony however when you realize that eventually Jared will have his own fanbase as he gains popularity - will he then call his refer to his own fanbase as "tribe" as well? How will his be any different?

In order to be part of a crowd whether it be political or religious it doesn't matter, you will have to sacrifice some of your intelligence to be a part of that crowd. They will never admit that they are just two sides of the same coin because they can't see it.
@TheDesertRat31
@TheDesertRat31 4 ай бұрын
No, sacrificing intelligence is not a prerequisite. The early catholic church fathers were among the most intelligent thinkers in history. Look up some of people responsible for the groundbreaking scientific discoveries during the Enlightenment. Several were theologians and most were very devout Christians, along with other faith traditions.

I am not their defense representative... but you do know that the Bible was created by a pagan Emperor of Rome and his court deciding what to put in the book and what not to. I am not saying that they didn't stumble on something good, I am just saying that it was created by flawed humans, too. Nothing is infallible. Nothing is perfect to everyone all the time.

Fascinating contrast between sincere faith and ideology. Good on you to assume the best of Oliver's faith until proven otherwise. I also hope he stays separate from the ideologies that want to co-opt his popularity. And I hope he is genuine in his attempt to confront hypocrites on all sides, rather than just adding one more voice to a seething grievance culture. Kudos for bringing Burke's own words to bear on his ideological descendants. That is a powerful way to undermine an opponent's position. Well done.

As a Pastor I appreciate your acknowledgement of folks like Shapiro and Peterson utilizing the religion aspect of their faith as essentially an ideology. Hypocrisy and ignorance is everywhere, but for me, mercy and grace provide solace in a beautifully broken world. Keep up the intentional journey! ✌️

As someone who grew up in a very conservative religious community and had to leave in order to genuinely encounter Christ I have not been comfortable with Peterson’s admonitions to everyone to “get back to church”. Church was the Rich men north of Richmond and inspired as much frustration as what I heard in Oliver Anthony’s song. It was a place where decisions were made to control for the purpose of profit. So different to Jesus’ invitation to the weary to come to Him for rest to learn the unforced rhythms of grace. With the promise that He was gentle and humble and would put nothing ill fitting on His followers. I recently heard a wealthy actor talking about the utility of religion and the part it had played in his success and wise decision making. Similar to Shapiro’s claim that it’s the greatest self help book. He went on to admit that the Proverbs had utility but he had no idea what to do with or use for the burning bush and other miracles. That’s because the man in need of a miracle is the one who can no longer help himself. He is the one standing in front of Jesus like Andrew holding five loaves and two small fishes. He’s just been told to feed five thousand people and says “What is so little among so many?” He is Abraham looking at his body which is old and decrepit after God has said he will have a son. Standing in this place and not wavering in your faith is what I believe Oliver Anthony was trying to express. “The true man trusts in a strength which is not his, and which he does not feel…and seeks Him who is his life, as the natural, simple cure of all that is amiss with him and receives the power to do, and be, and live, even when he is weary,-this is the victory that overcomes the world.” George MacDonald This has nothing to do with utility and self help.

Hey man, I just wanted to say thank you for this… it briefly reignited my passion for philosophy and reminded me of its importance. I was a philosophy undergrad who graduated a couple of years ago from a uni staunchly entrenched in the analytic tradition. Philosophy become a chess game where every dialectical move I made alienated me further from my own beliefs and self.(I focused primarily on analytic metaphysics and philosophy of mind). This lead me to question the importance of philosophy and I honestly became disgusted with the field. I decided to basically become a pyrrhonnist and to live in the world rather than to externalize it as something to be observed. I came across this video as the song Richmen North of Richmond really struck a cord with me and I was looking to find some analyses on the situation. They way you blended philosophy into your unique cultural analysis has reminded me of the importance and wealth of certain disciplines I came to despise… so thank you sir… whether right or wrong, you certainly gained a new subscriber (:

Excellent video! The great 16th century reformer, Martin Luther, addressed several of these issues (and more) in his Commentary on the Magnificat. It was basically an extended ‘advice column’ written for the benefit of a 19-year-old prince who was destined to be one of the most powerful men in Europe. In the commentary, which addresses the faithful management of wisdom, power and wealth, Luther early on establishes that Reason is incapable of leading faith, and if it tries, it will necessarily lose its way, so Faith must rightly lead the Christian in love and trust of God, even (and especially) when Reason argues otherwise.

I'm not a fan of justifying Christianity via conseqeuntialist arguments, but I get why it's popular to do that nowadays. Christianity (and other religions) have largely been attacked on consequentialist grounds by their opponents and it's hard to resist responding in kind. When you're critiqued politically, it's hard to resist responding politically, even if doing so ultimately betrays a position of weakness. Though it's also worth noting that direct open antitheism has become somewhat unpopular as a progressive culture war position over the past decade for (I'd argue) the same reason that being "gender critical" has. Things have changed direction.

As an Episcopal priest, I want to give you a slow clap. You got it. Either God and Religion are ultimately valuable because of what they are in Godself, or they are simply descriptive with no normative power or value. What is completely illogical is the idea that they are valuable for strictly utilitarian purposes of moral formation. We have entirely rational and objective forms of morality- from Kant to Mill to Marx to Rand to Singer- if we want morality without religion. The reason to be religious is not to be moral, but to be spiritually transformed by a relationship with the Divine.

Everytime I speak to her she tells me that she isn't religious, she is just following the "the word of the one true God" (she's evangelical Christian btw). I 've always told her that what she's saying is the same said by most followers of most religions. But still, she's unable or unwilling to recognized that. Joe Rogan is a voting Democrat who stated he will never vote for Trump. What made him right-wing was getting alternative treatment to 19, the left-wing media lied and made fun of him for that. Your analysis is engaging and thought-provoking, as usual. However, I cannot agree with your point. There is a massive difference between embracing religious values as guidance to live one's life and using them as a framework to organize society. I think you are conflating those two things, and as a result, you end up offering an inaccurate representation of the conservative point. Your analysis would be correct if we were talking about religious men appealing to pragmatic arguments to gain adepts. Organizing one's personal life according to religion is a matter of faith. It is not something you can be "argued into" but an experience you must have. Appealing to convenience or any other "mundane" reasoning to bring others into one's faith would be trivializing the highly revealed truth (I am sure that conservatives agree with you on that point). However, things are different when the goal is not to bring someone into religion but to argue for the best path to organize society. In that case, conservatives know they need to talk to an audience that often does not share their faith, so they need to use discursive and pragmatic arguments to convince them. In that case, the stakes are not the transcendent issues of saving one's soul but the mundane matters of organizing our time on earth. To me, Shapiro and Peterson are answering the challenges that figures like Christopher Hitchens or Richard Dawkins posed during the 90s and 2000s. The main criticism against conservatives was that they wanted to impose their religious dogma on the rest of society. They were trying to organize everyone else's life according to revealed commands not up for debate. That criticism was valid on principle and factually correct. However, now, instead of saying: "follow the Bible because my God says so," they say: "follow the bible because their principles improve our life." I am not saying that I find that argument convincing or appealing, but it is certainly an improvement from what conservatives used to do. They are separating the "sublime and faith-based" approach required for religious proselytism from the pragmatical and mundane argumentation that should be used in the secular political realm.

Sure there can be some confusion in what the lyrics are saying (ie minors on an island somewhere), but I never doubted the sincerity or feeling of pain that went into the song. Ultimately I think it's a song many people are connecting to because of the focus on the rich and corrupt in the US.

Only thing I was pondering was that judeo-Christian teachings do give us an oppurtunity to plug into something that, whilst I don’t believe it is something shaped by deities, represents a canon of memes/archetypes that have followed us around in some form for god knows (lol) how long. I think Peterson and moreover Jung is trying to bridge that gap - between our deep instincts stories and our biological evolution as a species. I don’t necessarily think you can critique it fairly as something that some king or writer at some point just ‘got right’…. Hope that makes sense

9:34 any respect for a father isn’t just because of some superiority in the father rather it is the love for the child and the greater experience they have. A respect for the person that helped make you and cares for you more than most any other person on the planet. I suppose that some fathers have sacrificed their right to respect with their abandonment of the duties a father should embody. But then they have fallen from a father to a genetic donor: not a person to be respected beyond the thanks for existence. This relationship is vastly different than that held with a deity. Mostly because the relationship is based on facts not faith. An easily measured set of conditions and actions. That most religions speak of their deity as The Father is to simply inspire a relatable worldly relationship to a difficult concept.

I believe we need to educate our fellow Americans as to how little we truly suffer in comparison with… well every human that ever lived. We are the most spoiled people to ever live, the most privileged, the most self absorbed. Why can we not step back and smell the roses? While we fight over everything from the top of the world there is more slavery happening right now than any time on earths history.. but we make “so and so said something mean” out to be the hugest showing of inequality and human suffering… we argue about it on $1000 cell phones from our heated homes often on our working toilets… we tell each other plenty about how and why were suffering but I never see anyone mention how wonderful and convenient our lives are how we should appreciate all the gifts in our lives instead of focusing on the negatives at all times. Got the record the government loves to see us stuck complaining so they can keep using one side against the other. Thoughts?

Ita fascinating to see right wing figure heads appealing to the secular applicability of religion as a strategic move to navigate an increasingly less religious world. The pandering performance is unbearable and as stated it degrades and profanes the very thing the profess to worship and value.

He should have just gotten the 8m. What is his reason to turn that down? If someone is willing to front that out. That doesn't really preclude him from performing for those who have lesser means.

Maybe he’s a Matthew 19:23-24 kind of guy: Then Jesus said to His disciples, “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”

That seems to be too literal of an interpretation. That is supposed to be a statement about greed and refusing to let go of your earthly riches. But with all his inconsistent analysis of politics. Maybe he does interpret that passage literally.

I didn't really know much about this song or Oliver Anthony, a lot of the discourse around it seemed a little too Culture-War entrenched for my tastes. But respect to Anthony for not giving into to the culture war and going all out grifting for the side that tried to coopt him. Even if you don't agree with him or with parts of the song, I think he recognizes the two-sided hypocritical nature of both parties and cares about downtrodden people. I'd say he deserves to be taken at face value and not as a right-wing psyop or something.

That was brilliant. Perhaps at some point you should do a video on how Peterson has bastardized Jung, who complained about many of the things you mention here and tried to revive the idea of Otto's "numinos", which, as you point out, is something mere ideology cannot, and SHOULD not touch.

Sorry. Maybe it’s because I absolutely hate Ronald Reagen and Reaganism. But I’m not gonna let go of the fudge round line. There are thousands of ways he could’ve written class warfare But he chose to use that line which could/Was interpreted the way it was. It’s on him that he wrote the line And distracted the rest of us from taking in a lot of the other part of the song. So I feel a little sympathy for the man or anyone that’s trying to defend him.

I've heard countless people on the left speak on all the lyrics, not just the last verse. none of them said they disagree with the clear reference to Epstein. I've heard some say (and I agree) that it's a weird verse and it's jarring the first time you hear it. but no one is denying that most of it comes from a sincere place and that a lot of us on both sides relate to a lot of the messaging. and I've heard many rightly criticize the last verse because it's ignorant and short sighted and has little to do w out inability to take care of our homeless population. to argue the contrary and criticize "the left" in the way you do here is inaccurate and dishonest and comes off like you have something against "them"

So as a person on Bernie left I can tell you right now that fudge round line is bullshit. And his subsequent apologies doesn’t really address that line. He had 1000 ways to Sunday to write a song about class warfare. And he decided to concentrate on that? No I don’t fly by me and Pretty much destroys any goodwill this song has building up to that line. As for the minors on the island versus the miners. Yeah the coal miners should never be forgotten. Especially since In Alabama do union still fighting for minors right within that state. But also people forget that those minors on an island are important because number one most people are actually horrified when children get taken advantage of. And also it shows that when you got money a lot of times you’re above the law. Yeah they got Epstein. But what about his ties to Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and Bill Gates? Looks like they’re still sitting pretty At least when it comes to that particular issue. I get that issue comes down to class too.
