He has referenced Hank Williams Jr. as one of his influences, who i might note also has a conversational approach in his delivery. Oliver (Chris) also responded to many who had called his music "Appalachian" by saying he was raised in the Piedmont, not in Appalachia; but where his geographical location and life experience does differ, there are undeniable echoes of mountain folk music in his style. His guitar is a Gretzch resonator, the metal plate was designed to amplify the sound in the days before electronic amplification. The major brand selling these resonators is Dobro, so many folks refer to them by that name. The sound is very reminiscent of pedal steel guitars.

The last time I saw a story teller just stand play their guitar and sing from their soul with no gimmicks or fancy backing about the desperation of living in abject poverty and trying to escape it was Tracy Chapman in her song Fast Car. She became a super star because it resonated with so many people and she was the real deal. Oliver / Christopher has taken it even further, exposing the dark side of our men and women in suits rulers who have sold their souls and wish to crush our spirits. That is why this is an across the board smash hit, he sings the truth from the soul and has brought the evil ones into the spotlight of the masses. God is speaking through this man with the Holy Spirit and everyone can feel it, that's why we cry when we hear this song and we have to hear it over and over and over........

Thank you for your detailed analysis as a professional vocalist and instructor to OA's performance here. I pursued singing pretty hard for about 12 years when I was younger so I do appreciate the distinctions your making. Thank you. I will say that you seem to be the first person I have watched react to this song that did not get hit viscerally so hard from OA's performance. His singing is in the Scots-Irish folk tradition. They settled in Appalachia and other rural areas, far from centers of power.
