Damn, I miss the days when Disney had balls and I appreciated on how they depicted New York as something of a hellhole. Joshua Lowe One was because Fagin and the gang were running away from Sykes The other was because Snowball and Max were going to save Duke. What I realized after rewatching the film was how soft ‘Secret Life of Pets’ was. In ‘Oliver and Company’, there was tension on whether our protagonist (Oliver, Jenny and Dodger) will live or not and it also resulted on the two dobermans (Roscoe and Desoto) getting struck in the train tracks and Sykes getting runned over by a train. What led to the Brooklyn Chase in TSLOP was very forced.

My aunt told me a story about a West Highland Terrier/Poodle mix she had named Buddy who really didn't like a certain bigger dog that would walk by. Once, he got out of the house and grabbed the dog by the neck, literally hanging from it. She said the bigger dog wasn't seriously hurt and didn't even try to attack Buddy afterwards. Buddy lived for a long time too. He was 17 when he died.

Certain dog breeds were bred for specific purposes 100+ years ago, for certain ones, and so they cannot simply unlearn what was passed down genetically. Dobermans and other breeds have the tendency to showcase more aggression but it also depends on how they were raised.

I've heard it discussed that surprisingly enough, Dobermans can often naturally be very gentle _and_ are some of the smarter dog breeds...which raised the question of why Roscoe and Desoto are so cruel and dim-witted. The answer that was given? _Sykes is their master_ and if he can raise them to be as singlemindedly cruel as we see, who's to say he bothered to try and teach them to be properly smart, and instead had them only be vicious thugs in dog form?

@@Lord_KillerBee That doesn't change the fact that how you raise a dog determines how they turn out. Yest Dobermans, rotties, German Shepards and pitties were all bred to be aggressive. That's because many of those breeds were intended as guard/attack dogs and in the less civil times before the modern era you did whatever it took to keep yourself and your family safe and alive. Nowadays people don't need to rely on dogs as much, though they are still one of the best home defense options after a loaded 12 gauge. Also, you can still get a dog that's good at guarding the family home while still being friendly and relatively nonaggressive simply by using positive reinforcement training like the Military and Law enforcement use to train their dogs.

Animated movies usually take about 3 years to be fully animated, since the voices are pre-recorded. ANYWAYS I'm pretty sure the movie was influenced by things that were really happening during the late 60s and early 70s. RoScoe probably would have been on drugs and abusing women in his uptown penthouse and having them be blackmailed so they couldn't escape.

There’s something about the specific style of this movie and Great Mouse Detective that I love: the way there is still the rough line work of the 1960s and 1970s, but paired with more cartoonish designs reminding me of 1940s Bob Clampett and Ralph Bakshi (Oh dear I sound like John K and I hate it) as well as the sometimes intense and brutal moments of animation.

Animation inconsistencies: 1:50 Dobermans get right in front of Fagin, with Dodger in between. 1:57-1:59 Dobermans tackle Fagin from the front, Dodger is no longer in between. 1:59 Dodger runs at the Dobermans like he's been several feet behind them. Fagin and Dobermans are positioned like they tackled him from the back instead of the front.

As a kid I would cry and refuse to watch the scene when Dodger fights Roscoe and DeSoto.. and as a 35 year old adult now I can really see why. I still get the same upset feeling and tears in my eyes when seeing one of the dogs bite and maul Dodger, eventually hearing and seeing Dodger cry and fall to the ground while Roscoe and DeSoto walk off like they did a good job. That was truly truly evil and unfair.

Those are very well trained dobermans. Can't help but love them. Say what you want about Sykes, he loves his dogs. Purebred dobermans are expensive, then they have diamonds on their colors, the car has dobermans instead of a jaguar on the hood, and even his license plate is "Doberman". I have a doberman too and I share that level of love... I'm just about as broke as Fagin is though lol And Fagin has a gambling problem. Even after the mess with Sykes he gambles with Mr. Winston at the end, loses, backs out and even steals an apple from him. As an adult, I wished the dobermans would have eaten Fagin.

Both aren't naturally aggressive and Fagin genuinely loves his dogs, he prob knows that Dodger is the most comfortable standing his ground against the two dobermans trying to bully and psyche them out. Also I imagine Sykes would have only allowed Fagin to bring one dog just in case to keep the upper hand.
