Legendary film director, screenwriter, and producer Oliver Stone returns to TYT, talking about his Untold History of the United States. Stone joins Cenk Uygur to reexamine key points in American history, including WWII and the effects of banking and the economic climate, coups for the purposes of business interests, and the place (and lack of) progressive legislation in U.S. history. How do President Obama and President Kennedy compare? Furthermore, have all the details of Kennedy's assassination come to light? How did the system handle historical curveballs like President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.?
Oliver Stone and Cenk Uygur have a frank discussion of untold American history, and also delve a bit into Stone's own storied past.
Oliver Stone's Untold History of the United States is available on Blu-ray and DVD now:
www.amazon.com/...

Whatever your personal views are about Oliver Stone's political ideology and stance may be, you have to admit; you can't get away from how genuinely warm, amiable, and engaging he is when he speaks. He almost reminds me a little of Orson Welles - if Orson only drank tea and ate vegetables for 20 years. Both men are my top two choices I wish I'd had as a male teacher... for any subject!
@Ptrm594

I disagree with him on a great many things, I think he is less concerned with the truth, and more with his own beliefs. I think he typifies a certain type of ideologue who has a simplified view of history - a view that doesn't account for complex realities that often run counter to his personal narrative, i.e. his belief system. (When you think of history in narrative terms, when you paint protagonists and antagonists into history, you end up carving a fantasy from reality: Stone ascribes motivations to historical figures that are far too simple and he ignores or doesn't know about people and policies which run counter to his stories. His view of FDR as a progressive paragon who was above criticism from the left has no historical value. In fact he does a disservice to history by omitting the agrarian criticisms of FDR. Or the politically expedient embrace of Southern Democrats at the expense of black Americans - who were segregated in the military that fought in WW2. Or the progressive view of FDR as milquetoast whose New Deal was hardly different from the old deal. By ignoring Huey Long, who posed an immense political threat to FDR, by ignoring the Socialist Party's criticiams and the candidacy of men like Upton Sinclair, Stone's history amounts more to fiction. Fiction where FDR was good and pure and progressive, where Stimson was his heir, and where Truman was amoral, a conservative warmongering scoundrel. Stone pretends Truman dropped the bomb because he was a rotten person, when in reality, he had a way to save 50,000 American lives, which is the minimum number of deaths the military expected to face by invading mainland Japan. The Japanese had their own estimates which were similar. They would not have surrendered without an invasion, or the bomb. We know this because their own plans said as much as did their generals. We also know how they fought in Manchuria after the 1st bomb had been dropped but before the 2nd: the Russians took many thousands of deaths in a WEEK fighting a supposedly broken Japanese army. Stone never mentions this campaign.
@Ptrm594
@Ptrm594 9 жыл бұрын
So by ignoring realities that run counter to his arguments, he paints history not as it was but as he would like it to have been. He is not, then, a truth seeker, but a man whose beliefs go for the most part, unchallenged, and so he purveys his beliefs as historical truth. Shelby Foote, the Civil War historian and author, wrote a series of tomes on a war whose history is still disputed, and he presented all the figures as he found them in the source material: he does not depict Jeff Davis as sinister nor Lincoln as a white knight. This goes for all the figures in his lengthy volumes. Foote said he did not apply his personal beliefs to history: opinions, he said, were mostly inappropriate in presenting history. And most of the men and women of the war were just trying to do their best, and so Foote avoided forming opinions about them in any case, leaving that, he said, to politicians. Stone would have done well to keep his opinions out of his historical program, because he would have delivered a more accurate show that way.

Lastly, to me Stone seems to exemplify a political pessimism common in progressive politics. He helps progressives become sicker and more tired of politics and he helps this infection of cynicism that is like political gangrene to the left: it stops them going to the polls. It stops political mobility. It stops enthusiasm. It dampens even pragmatic considerations. He is a prime purveyor of distortions and half truths, leading to that pessimism I mentioned. A pessimism born really of dishonesty. But I do agree with your comment on Stone's personal mannerisms, he is immensely calm and relaxing, incredibly pleasant to listen to and I always enjoy his interviews for that reason. He would be great as a radio host. I do not understand how people can listen to Michael Savage or Mark Levin without just becoming agitated and getting ear infections!

Did Cenk finally admit that it was the Wall Street bankers that got the United States into World War one???? Oh my god, don't let Alex Jones know that Cenk is now a conspiracy theorist now too! Oliver Stone is a blessing to the film /movie industry, of all his movies I personally think "The People vs. Larry Flint" is probably his best [and unfortunately was not given an opportunity/chance to show the importance of this event in history], and deserves a re-release to the public [if ever a movie deserved it, this is the one] !!!....

I dissent on one point: Eisenhower actually fought the Military-Industrial complex who wanted to return to a level of conventional forces that rivaled WW II. His tax plan during the 50s for the top tier of earners could reach 90%. He left office warning us about the Military Industrial Complex - 4 years later we are nuts deep in VN (Stone and my war). He fought against committing US troops to ground wars. Nucs? This was his sop to the MIC & Pentagon under the MAD concept. The military leaders actually attacked Ike for being soft on communism and putting our country at risk in his last term. I love Stone, but he tends to like to paint with a broad brush, all bad, all good. Things are seldom quite this simple.

The idea that countries go to war for moral reasons is obviously incorrect - but people always seem to think this, and then have a hard time rationalizing it. If you think countries go to war for moral reasons then their behaviour would appear random.

This guy fought for America along side his fellow soldiers. he has the talent, the money, the fame and reputation to do almost anything. unless he is seeking hard by investing his money,his time and energy to witness the truth, i do not see any other reason than this. For such extraordinary duty, history and citizens of the world will always remember Oliver Stone as one of the few precious, courageous and outstanding persons of the 21st century. The best scenario in the white house, in my opinion, would be Ron Paul, Jessie Ventura and Oliver Stone sharing the duties of the presidency. Either one could be president and it would be fine...as long as Ron stays away from health care issues and Ventura stays away from gun reform issues. Oliver, is in my opinion, the most badass director/producers of all times. Anyone who is a thorn to the establishment and their history, is a winner in my book.
