I live near Battle Creek, do you know were the Oliver plant was located? . as a kid I started out operating oliver tractors in the 60's 77's 88's and we had an 880 ,1600 Oliver built combine's in battle creek too, painted them blue and put ford on them, be interesting too see were the plant was, keep up the great video's love to see them.

I can't find a specific address at this point, but it was located across the road from the Post factory. Everything was torn down shortly after Oliver left in 1962. White had moved all Battle Creek production to the newly acquired Cockshutt factory near Brantford, Ontario. Another history tidbit... Oliver made fuselages for B-52 bombers in Battle Creek.

Case Diesels are also very nice. My Grandfather has a 930 and it takes usually 2 days to empty the tank while running a New Holland Stacker Wagon. That was years ago when he had 20 head of cattle. My Grandfather used to work 2 Case Dealerships Snyders in Portland in the early 80s to the mid 90s and Jansons in Charlotte from the early 90s to maybe 2001.

I just finished restoring a 1957 Super 55. I grew up driving a 1955 Super 55 on our farm and our neighbor had a '57 S-55 with a loader. Another neighbor dairy had a Super 88 diesel. They were all good tractors. When my folks sold our farm to a developer in 1974, like an idiot I did not buy our S-55. Wished for one for years, finally found one two years ago at an auction. It had a loader and was in good condition except some front sheet metal damage and the PTO clutch was non functional from leaking seals. Pulled the loader, rebuild clutch pack and seals, other work like brakes, radiator, electrical, front axles, new front tires, hammered out the sheet metal and repainted it. Looks almost factory. My sons are already fighting over who gets it when I'm gone, which is pretty amazing since one is a John Deere guy and the other has Allis Chalmers orange in his veins. Use it all the time on my small farm, stays parked inside. Wife thinks I'm nuts, but that what happens when you're retired and love good tractors. I enjoy your Oliver videos, Chris. Keep it up.

So here’s another question: how did Oliver get their plow ratings? Early FWA literature shows the 1900A FWA as an 8 plow tractor. Did they use small bottoms shallow in light soil?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
The rule of thumb was half the width of cut should be your plowing depth. So 14 inch bottoms are going to plow much easier than 16s. Of course most farmers want to bury their plows and run somewhere around 10 inches deep, so they don't end up pulling as many bottoms. A 1900 Fwa could pull 8 14s set at 7 inches on my ground, but I know there is ground out there it wouldn't stand a chance in. Another factor is speed. We go faster than we used to which also takes more power.

Hello and thank you for your for spaning massive historic tractor knowlege. I'm a follower from Sweden, so my English is a bit " so and so". I wounder if you can share some story abort the late Oliver "Corporate tractor". There is not much information on that line up as I understand?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
The corporate tractor was actually going to be several models that were new from the ground up. All new engines that were to be built in a new factory in Canton, Ohio. New transmissions and final drives, new sheet metal with a new look. These tractors were going to replace the Oliver, Minneapolis Moline and Cockshutt lines with one complete line. They were even going to have a continuously variable transmission. Everything was nearing completion, prototypes had been built and tested , but the early 1970s were a tough time for Oliver and parent company White Motor, so management scrapped the whole line, sold the new engine factory in Canton, and continued producing the separate Oliver, MM, and Cockshutt trator lines. A couple years later they decided to consolidate the 3 lines and that's when the White tractors first rolled off the line.

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
Not a lot, but they did export. Some went to Europe, they sold quite few 2255s to a diamond mine in Africa. They also sent some 66 diesels to Central America for banana plantations. Those had a special hand pump hydraulic starter for the engine, with no electrical system. The humid air would corrode the electric connections in no time, so these hydraulic starters were just the solution. They had a huge sale to Russia in the 1930s that pretty much saved Oliver from the Great Depression. So they are out there around the world. I often wonder what happened to some of those exported tractors.

Excellent video! I love how your keeping the history of Oliver alive. I often wonder how did White tractors become Silver? I am sure there is a story to it. I really liked running that tractor and loved the big tub engine frame.

The story I have heard is that when they jad decided to consolidate the 3 tractor brands, Oliver, MM and Cockshutt, there was infighting over which brand should be the successor and have its name and color on the tractors. Finally someone said we're going to call it the White tractor and we're going to pick a neutral color. That's when they picked silver.

Love this series, keep the videos coming sir! You weren't kidding about folks painting and changing the Super series around. I have a 990, but it actually is a 1955 Super 99 GM by the Serial Number. They went and actually put a 990 hood on it, and repainted it green and white. Not sure as to why, maybe it hadn't sold and they updated it to fit the newest series on the dealer lot??? Someone with your knowledge would be able to tell right away that it isn't a true 990, since it has the older frame with no holes to attach anything to it, or the dash is the older cast style with no tachometer on it. Anyways, hope you're doing well!

@@ThatOliverGuyChris Gotta be the Deere guys. They can't compete with "the right Green" or Red so they're bitter.

Thanks for sharing the history , I didn't know a lot about these tractors since we didn't have them on our farm or on anyone's close. My uncle had a 77 or a 88 ( I can't remember which) I appreciate the stories and learning about them. Great video.

My pop had one he said it was a great little tractor for it size. I remember it was a 4 cylinder diesel.

On my s88 lp why does it spit and sputter when I put a load on it?

I've never worked on an LP, but with gasoline it's typically because it is running lean on fuel. I'd have to look up how to adjust fuel mixture on an LP.
