I just resealed my steering cylinder on our 1755, appreciate all that help you put on here I had to spend a close to $40 in parts to reseal it and I’m guessing the labor bill would have been north of $700 at a dealership to hire it done Greatly appreciated

I seen this come up in my list of videos to watch, which my son and I have done the White American 80 twice on the complete tare down. We also have taken it apart for the steering sector arm, due to the bottom not being on correctly and wearing. This isn't too bad to do, it's just a little bit of a pain when you don't have a place to do it in. Nice video, good instructions on the rebuild. Thanks Chris, have a good evening and a great weekend!

I remember there were some recalls on the front axle of the American. One involved the steering arm. It had the wrong geometry and one side would steer too sharp compared to the other side. I would think something like that would have been a no brainer by the late 1980s, but they beat the odds on that one. 😂

It looks like a similar system to the John Deere 4020 except there are two pistons. What seems to happen when there is a failed seal in those is the steering will turn the front wheels for you. Unfortunately the same symptoms appear if the steering valve under the dash is leaking. It pays to learn to do as much for yourself as possible. The cost to have Deere rebuild the steering valve is about $1200. A rebuilt valve from Abilene machine is somewhere around $900 but the rebuild kit from Deere was $150. There is another alternative. Someone has put out a steering valve similar to what Oliver used as a direct replacement for the original valve.

There must be two different types of power steering units for the 770 ? Mine I had big issues with. Had it apart at least 20 times before I figured out the problem. Each time on the end of the shaft the " O " ring was cut. Finally I notices a tiny crack in the outer collar / bushing on the end of the shaft. The factory weld was cracked........ maybe a 1/ 32 of an inch. When it traveled to the end it cut the O ring because it traveled too far. If a person dont really pay attention......you can miss it ! I tapped the collar back on and spot welded it back on. Problem solved !
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Early 770s used the Gemmer power steering box. That was more of a power assist, as the steering shaft went all the way to the box and still mechanically moved the parts inside. The later 770s had a box like the one in this video that steered totally by hydraulics.

Question for you. Have 2-105 with same steering gearbox as video. Hit a tile suck hole and busted an inner tie rod end. It started leaking at the top plate of steering gear box. Re sealed top plate. Still leaking in same spot. Do you think the jolt of hitting the hole could have tweaked that top plate? We tore the whole steering box apart and all the seals look fine. The only thing I can think of is that top plate got tweaked upward and doesn’t fit tight to main gearbox.

Hey Chris, I had a steering type motor up there on the steering on a 285 was leaking thank you so they changed it but after they changed it, I was bailing hay and if you put the brakes on the power takeoff goes off, banging uphill, they said to set the battle of the pressure up. Where do you do that at?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris Жыл бұрын
I don't have a video on adjusting the hydraulic pressure, but Ross the Oliver Man does at kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqq7eGR9nNygotksi=RR979poFw7MFpHiz There is a pressure reducing valve in the valve body that is down by the left brake. That feeds the brakes and PTO. The brakes and PTO use only about 180 PSI, so I doubt it's your pump or main pressure setting. There's probably a sticking valve in the pressure reducer or priority valve, and using the brakes increases the flow, which drops pressure. The PTO valve is designed to disengage when pressure is lost so that when the tractor is shut off the lever kicks out and the PTO is off next time you start the tractor, so the same feature is kicking the PTO when the brakes need oil.

I would assume almost the same for a 1750, could this possibly put air back into hydro system/pump if seals went bad?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 2 жыл бұрын
Exact same steering box on a 1750. I suppose it could let some air in when oil leaks out, but I find that highly unlikely. Now if you get into a 1755 that has a cooler circulation pump that also includes a drain line from the steering box to that pump, then the answer is yes. I worked on an 1855 that was doing just that, so we capped off the drain line that went from the steering box cover to the pump. No more air.

Hi. Just rebuilt this on my oliver 1850 with your video as my guide. My problem is the steering motor keeps jumping out of position during test drive. What am I missing?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 3 жыл бұрын
Did you get the bolt that goes into the top of the gear tightened down properly? The bolt I'm talking about is being tightened at 25:35 in this video. Once that is tightened down and the top cap is secured, the box should not be able to go up and down. If everything is tight, then there might be a bearing out in the vertical spindle of your narrow front. If that wasn't a problem before you rebuilt the box, then I'd take the top cap back off and double check that bolt. Could be the washer that is welded to it broke and isn't holding it down.

My son has a 1650 and we used it to plant corn this spring. It is hard to keep it on the marker line. It seems like it always wants to drift to the same side. I forget which side now but you have to constantly keep correcting it. It does have 1 front tire that is bigger than the other and we are going to fix that but could it have another problem that would cause this.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 3 жыл бұрын
Usually it's the right that drifts to. It's the steering motor in the dash, that Saginaw unit tends to drift, especially on the road. There's not much rebuilding to those and the best solution is to replace it with a Char-Lynn steering motor. I've got a set of videos on doing that job on a 1650.

Is the steering oil coming from the transmission ? Or is it seperate.
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
On most Olivers it comes from the hydraulics, which is separate from the transmission. Industrial tractors, and even some ag versions had a separate belt driven pump to power the steering system. Those typically used automatic transmission fluid.

Great job Chris. Any tips/ suggestions replacing power steering hoses on a 1800 A ? Hoses need to be replaced before pressed on fittings below dash where meets steel fittings to pump Can these be spliced if so what type fittings and what size hose ?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not following 100%, but they can all be replaced with hose if you want to go that route. There's some JIC fittings, and some are inverted flare. The simplest solution is to take the lines off and take them to a NAPA or a place that will make hydraulic hoses. They will be able to match up the fittings on each end and make them any length you want.

@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
On the 1650, try holding a remote lever back while steering. If that improves the steering, then there is a spool that is sticking in the priority valve. If it doesn't improve, it could be low pressure, or something in the steering motor in the dash. Normally there isn't much that binds up in the front, but you could try jacking it up and turning without weight on the front wheels to see if it improves, or if you can hear something squeking.
@farmdude1008
@farmdude1008 4 жыл бұрын
@@ThatOliverGuyChris and on the American 60, it takes a lot of steering wheel turning to get any front wheel turning, would the same test be a good one to try? Also, should the remote be hooked to anything when it gets held back? Thanks for the ideas!
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
It's best if the remote isn't hooked to anything. What you're doing is creating back pressure since the oil has nowhere to go, and it feeds back into the flow divider and steering. You could try it on the 60, but the flow divider on those is different as is the steering motor.

Is it possilble (worthwhile) to add power steering to my 770 Row Crop?
@ThatOliverGuyChris
@ThatOliverGuyChris 4 жыл бұрын
Power steering was an option for the 770, but not a common one from what I have seen. The factory unit was made by Gemmer, and still had a shaft and gears to turn it from the wheel, but would activate the power part of it while steering to make turning easy. Later on, Oliver offered an update kit to add this kind of steering box to the 770 and 880. A Saginaw hydrostatic steering motor was added at the bottom of the dash and one of these boxes was placed up front with steering lines in between. They do steer nice and easy with power steering. If your 770 is a loader tractor, it would be a big difference.
