Chris I still have a 5 bottom model 508 White plow I use for plowing under alfalfa hay fields that I want to reseed in the fall. I use to pull it with my 2-155 White but kept the plow when I traded my White in for a John Deere because moldboard wasn't worth much of anything and I still liked turning old hay ground in the fall. Pulls easy like the Oliver plows do.

In the early '70s I bought an Oliver 3x 12,14,16 for my JD 2010. It was set for 14 inch and I wanted to change to 16 inch. Surprise to find out by the book I needed to buy new frogs and everything to go with the new frog, doubled the cost of the plow. I enjoyed the plow and think Oliver made the best plows. Dave Bowers

Most of my IH dealers in TX/CA sold rollover plows (140/145/165) and the tail wheel had a lock that was semi circular with two notches that would latch / unlatch by gravity when the plow was rolled and would lock in notch. Same operation to roll them as you described with hitting the aux valve to extend to mid way and then retract. I do not recognize the tubular type mount on the tail wheel you showed but could be from another model. Plowing is kind of coming back into use after years of no till/ min till - I enjoy all your videos - very well done and enjoyable to hear someone talk about product who understands how things work - keep up the good work.

@danielkaiser72452 жыл бұрын
@@ThatOliverGuyChris , NE Iowa is where it is at, near Waverly, IA. I think the beam is there on the plow. I don't recall any missing parts on the frame. We bought two 4 bottom 4340's one was complete and the other just the frame with no axles, hitch, or bottoms. I am also looking for parts for a 4340. Dad sold off the the hitch assembly for a 3 bottom and I have been trying to locate someone who has some parted out plows to see if I can locate a hitch similar to the 3 bottom you had in the video. Any chance you have any parted out? We have a few other incomplete plows but for the life of me I cannot locate a hitch and normally Dad didn't part with anything especially from something we could use. The farm isn't too terribly far from where the summer show is this year. I will probably be at the show in June and could pull the beam off if you need it. You only need the long beam correct? I am not located near the farm though, I am up in Minnesota around the Twin Cities. I will be back to Iowa now and then to finish dealing with what's left that we didn't auction off.

That frame and a bunch of the other parts plows we have are sitting at another farm so I will need to see if I can get over to move some stuff around. If we don't get moving on planting soon in Minnesota, I probably won't be back to Iowa until the end of May early June. Oliver did have a tool, the ST-115-G puller. The 88 sized head had larger energy cells, so one side had larger threads for them and the other side was smaller for 77 and smaller engines. Of course the service manual doesn't mention the thread size, but you can get a bolt and nut of the appropriate size and make your own puller from that.

Now they are making strip-tillage equipment. They till a 6" wide strip and the position is GPS recorded into the computer and when the planter comes in GPS makes the planter follow exactly in those previous tilled strips. Local farmers are doing that but one who tests everything says he gets better crops with fall disking and no-till planting. We had a customer who experimented with many things and had a field that he had been doing no-till exclusively for over 20 years. We always had customers who were contemplating going no-till and we would refer them to Frank to chat about why he thought no-till made better dollars and cents. Tomorrow tractors and implements are all going to be "OPERATOR OPTIONAL"
@ThatOliverGuyChris3 жыл бұрын
We used to do a strip till setup with a Bush Hog Ro-til. It was an all in one pass, it worked up the rows and the planter got pulled behind it. Even back then we though about doing strip fertilizer, but with planting wheat and soybeans in 7.5" rows, we figured broadcast fertilizer was still our best option. I'm confident that there will be driverless tractors in my lifetime. A farm like mine will be a novelty that city people will want to take their kids to in the fall, just like the apple orchard or pumpkin patch.
@bigun4473 жыл бұрын
@@ThatOliverGuyChris We had a customer who bought a 4-180 somewhere and a PTO driven machine that rototilled in front of the planter units. It was a constant problem for him simply because it was an experimental unit and the company he bought it from was not repair parts compatible. Then when he threw a rod thru his cultivating tractor block he was in a bind simply because it had an IH fast hitch. The 4-180 coupler would clamp around the frame of the cultivator and we used a chain for the upper link connection. It was funny as heck watching that 4-180 cultivating with a cultivator only as wide it was. But, it worked. Driverless tractors are being tested in the Champaign area of IL. Probably because of a connection with the University of Illinois. The tractors do not even have a provision for a cab. The photos that have been put out makes it look like the far future is here. The "farmer" sits in his office and via the wonder of satellite-linked tractors and probable other powered equipment, he can monitor all of them. An old farmer my age tells me all he can do now is haul grain in his old tandem truck and mow the grass. All of the equipment his sons have are controlled by buttons on a control stick. Have you seen the videos of the Agco-Fendt 10 series combine that does not even have a steering wheel? Just a joystick to steer it. It looks weird looking down at the headers without a steering wheel blocking the view. How in the heck can farmers that leaned forward with the steering wheel being their support. I have read that JD has big problems with their new 10 series combine and have pulled it from some harvesting situations.

Once at a local consignment auction here in WNY, I found a rollover plow that was painted red with White decals. But under the red paint it was Ford blue with a Ford serial tag. I thought there must be some interesting story there about how White inventoried plows during that time when they made Ford and Case plows too. I've also heard stories of some Ford plows being red underneath. The debate being rather it was primer, or if it wasn't uncommon for White to pull plows out of inventory and repaint them as orders came in from Ford or Case.
@ThatOliverGuyChris3 жыл бұрын
My bet would be White would repaint to fill the order. I think the roll over plows were identical, unlike the changes I mentioned on the semi-mounts. They did that back in the Oliver days, it wasn't unheard of to get an Oliver with red Cockshutt paint underneath, or vice versa. When i restored my 1655, the entire dash pedestal was industrial yellow under the meadow green.

As an Oliver dealership, we used to set 16-inch plows on the 18-inch frame spacing and simply put on the longer shares. We sold some 8 bottom semi-mount plows and a couple of on-land hitch 8 bottom plows. We used to put a garden tractor painted up like an Oliver tractor and have it backed up to big disks and plows just to catch the eyes of farmers driving by the dealership. Any way you could get them to stop in or simply pay attention to what you had on your sales lot.

Hey Chris, I guess you must be jealous of our Case 700 then lol! Do you know what the White equivalent is to our plow? The Ford is a 152 I believe. Also someone mentioned in one of the videos that I was plowing in this fall that our plow has a variable width hitch on it. We have never adjusted it before so we didn't really know what to say to the person. We did look at it the other day and figured out how to adjust it. The only reason we could figure why you would want to set it out any more would be if you were running triples on your tractor. Do you know of any other reasons?
@ThatOliverGuyChris3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't mind having your 700 plow in my collection. It's the equivalent of the White 449 plow. The Ford version was the 155. The hitch on your plow is adjustable, but that's only for if you add or remove a bottom. I touch on that some in next week's video, but moving the hitch on a plow is no different than moving the hitch on a field cultivator or disc. If your hitch isn't lined up with the center of draft/load, it's going to pull crooked and take more power. It's easier to understand with a disc, because if you were to add width to it, you'd put a wing on each side and the hitch is still centered. With a plow, you add or remove from the back, which is also the left side of the tool, so it throws off the balance and you have to move the hitch. Hope that isn't too confusing.
