Ethan, I was pretty sure that she was going to complain about how much you were charging for custom bailing. Yes you're right that cost her a whole lot more money if she bought the tractor and all the equipment to do it. Have a good weekend and hopefully you can enjoy it. Thanks Michael

$175 for 6 hrs of work including your tractor and implements is cheap AF. Like thats only paying you 30$/hr and nothing left for the equipment running and maintenance cost. I know you do it for the love of it and for the opportunity of more ground but sometimes people aren't worth dealing with. Really enjoy your videos. Thanks.
@Oliver66FarmBoyКүн бұрын
I don’t have any overhead to cover so I’m not looking to take advantage of people. If I had 40k worth of hay equipment to Pay for that would be a different story.

The inconsistency I've had dealing with horse people is insane. One wants nothing to do with anything alfalfa, the next requires alfalfa. And it's gotta be super green, never rained on and baled perfectly. Unless the price is right, of course. Then it's all good and 'won't hurt anything.'
@Oliver66FarmBoyКүн бұрын
The alfalfa thing is very real and very stupid.

You can't be afraid to commit some customer darwinism when it comes to hay and especially custom baling. If they are a problem once, they will be a bigger problem in the future. When I was a teenager, I had to sick my Mom on a horse lady to get paid. Her neighbor was so happy with my work, he paid me extra.

The only way I’m doing anything else with that field is if it becomes mine.

I just finished baling 2nd cut here today. I got 108 rounds of good quality horse hay off 42 acres so I guess it wasn't a complete disaster, but I was hoping for 150 considering 1st cut was 289 back in June. As for stupid Horse Hellers, when they try that "beat my price down" shit, I raise the price by as much as they tried to beat me. Usually sounds like this; (Them) "So 10 dollars last year was a lot for a bale! Can we do 8?" (ME) "Actually it's 12 dollars this year & it will be 15 dollars come Christmas. Supply & demand you understand." (Them) 12! (ME) "Yup & that doesn't include delivery fees which is a 1$ per bale surcharge" (Them) ...silence on phone then "When can we pick up?"
@Oliver66FarmBoyКүн бұрын
I dont deliver. I’ve taken a few loads of straw to some elderly customers that don’t get around good but for the most part everyone gets told no on that.

Easy for me to say but i would not have gone down in price. It is what it is bad weather less hay. What happens if next year and get 3 x as much or what ever would it be okay pay less. Enjoyed your video have a great day.

A row crop guy getting into small square bale hay. Having fun yet? Next try brush hogging for fair pay. I agree with you 100%. People have no idea the money or work that goes into anything. Not just horse people either. People in general are far to detached WORK. If I was you I would fence off the area below your barn. Buy a couple animals and a small round baler. That is what we did haven't regretted it for a minute. The only thing in small square bale hay is back ache and high blood pressure.
@Oliver66FarmBoyКүн бұрын
I’ve been making hay in some capacity or another since I was 6 years old. I knew what I was getting in to. Still doesn’t make me think people are any less stupid when it happens.

I would’ve told her to pound sand. It’s not your responsibility with the yield on the FARM is if she owns the property maybe so if you sharecropping, I’m a flat rate or $200 per no way it’s worth it to do it any less. No cow people are not really any easier than horse people. They want it for absolutely free. I had a buddy that sold exclusively to dairy they’re 10 times worse than a horse person.
