I actually really enjoyed this movie and thought it had some great chilling moments to it. It was a bit different, but I think they handled the Predators themselves very well. And after The Predator, I think it's aged even better. No predators using disembodied arms to give people a thumb's up. And I'm definitely in the minority, but I liked that they used Brody as the main character instead of a huge body builder as the soldier-type. He felt more natural, and just an interesting change of pace.

Yeah, Brody being more of a lean type was great. But I have to admit, as much as The Predator was a mess, the thumbs up scene was genuinely funny and had me laughing. I still think the comedic tone was not the problem with The Predator. It was just a shitty and cluttered script.
@galmorzu
@galmorzu 4 жыл бұрын
@@wjzav1971 Yeah, good point. I think a lot of the things that bugged me about that movie could have been less important with a better script and story. My biggest issue with that movie was that studio interference feeling of, "if we do another movie, the predator is so familiar and boring, how can you make him bigger and meaner than before? Can we just make a super mutant predator? Now THAT would be scary!" Granted the berserker tribe in Predators is pretty much that, too, but they still function like normal predators for the most part and still get killed about as easily. They ended up just being another type of Predator species, so it was easier to fly with.

Actual combat medics are built, though. They're expected to carry a weapon like any other soldier in addition to their CLS bag. They also oftentimes have to, in the event of a wounded soldier on the battlefield, drag said soldier to a covered position in order to perform triage on them. Take it from experience: dragging a 200+ pound dude in full battle-rattle is not an easy thing to do, especially when your adrenaline is pumping after a firefight.

I've always loved this film and thought the ambiguous story telling worked really well in its favour to create mystery and add to the Predator lore without going too far in any wrong direction. Something that has always stuck with me however, is the fact that it's almost a beat for beat copy of the movie Cube. A bunch of strangers find themselves in an alien landscape and have to work together to essentially solve the puzzle they've been placed in - it even goes as far as to have the good guy - turn bad guy twist at the end, which is the one thing about both movies I really don't like. Really wish this got a sequel, that final shot is just perfection. It has a very similar feeling that Lost had in its mystery sci-fi storytelling.

Only Predators I was able to see a theaters and had a great time. I remember critics like Angry Joe complaining that it wasn't like the first one since it lacked the comradery of the original team but this wasn't that 80's type of movie, the film shows the very worst and deadliest of humanity, hence they are not going to be friends or joke, they are stone cold assassins and not being muscle men sells it well in how people are deadly without looking like stereotypical army men, especially in the case of the serial killer doctor, and realistic. What I love even more about it is that is a slasher film but the victims are people who CAN fight back and also kill, making all of them formidable opponents for the Predator, who by this point in the series had already degraded to slashing teenagers in the awful AVP:Requiem. Really bummed out it didn't live up to Fox's expectations and didn't got a direct sequel to it.
@toro5280
@toro5280 3 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but why would Angry Joe even expect comradery? In the original movie it was there because they were a TEAM, they had trained and fought together. These guys in Predators just met each other.

You need to rewatch Predator 2. It's pretty awful, it just happens to have some cool stuff in it. Danny Glover's character is the only one that gels and even then he's just a carbon copy of the gung-ho cop trope, Paxton is a parody of every character he'd portrayed up to that point, the Keyes subplot overburdens a weak script and takes it into pure hokey territory, the dialogue is utter nonsense delivered with flaccid conviction, the attempts at humor are cringey as all hell, and the pace is wildly uneven.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the second best Predator film - behind the original of course. Yes, the lying trailer really pissed me off... but ultimately this was a satisfying and fun throwback to the original and I love that they did so much practical FX work. It's a pity this film wasn't the one followed up on and we got Shane Black's god-awful attempt a few years ago instead. One would think that of all people, Shane Black would be able to deliver a solid Predator flick... but man, what a disappointment! I vaguely remember the sequel comic being kind of interesting. Yeah. The original thermal vision and technology of the original felt very gritty and heavy with how clunky and glitchy it appeared. Problems with this bunch of badasses in the jungle compared to the original badasses in the jungle, IMO, is these badasses take themselves just a wee bit too seriously. Just a wee bit. Also, Adrien Brody, yeah no. This ain't no Batman '89. Was that some Guy Davis art I saw there? I'm gonna need that DVD for those features.

If they tweaked a few details it would have made for a more enjoyable movie - Have Laurence Fishburne’s character come into the story earlier, acting as a mentor to the group and explaining the situation and the group initially disbelieving him. Drop the explanation from Isabel about the first film. Seems so random her character would know this. Have the group find out that there is a ship that will take them off the planet if they can make it though the preserve and the predators (sets up a ticking clock and gives the group a more specific goal while providing more tension). Have Topher Grace’s character twist be at the midpoint - the team sets up a trap only for Topher’s character to kill one of the team and have the predators get the jump on them. Also - HAVE THE PREDATORS USE THE DAMN TREES!!!! It’s just dudes in rubber suits running around on the ground and slamming into each other. Wouldn’t it have been cool for the two predators to fight using stealth in the trees, all cloak and dagger?

john murdoch so everyone in Israeli intel is briefed on a hostile alien threat that occurred in a Central American jungle in 1987 when its circa 2009/10? And this one sniper just happens to wind up on a planet run by this same hostile alien race? It’s a bad exposition dump because the filmmakers have to somehow get Adrien Brody’s character in mud by the finale without repeating how it was done in Predator ‘87. If you just had Laurence Fishburne’s character deliver it, you know, the guy who’s BEEN ON THE PRESERVE for a while, and has observed these things, it would make more sense and flow better.

I actually liked the cast for the main character. He is still a bit of the stereotype via writing, but tuned down a bunch so he feels like a real person who has had a rough life with a rather particular occupation, and one that is capable of using his brains not just his body. The acting actually transmits that. Still on a more stoic kind, but one that doesn't shun using his brains. In a way, I think he works just as good as Arnold's character, who actually seemed like an actual person including using his brains, in spite of the cliches and stereotypes and "look at how big these guys' muscles are" gimmicks.

Please. Predators 2 rocks. I am grateful that you showed the clips so that I never have to see Predators. I saw Mister Fishburne about a year before Predators was released at a local bookstore (Bodhi Tree) and he was limping something fierce - I can't imagine how the dude did this film in that condition, perhaps they had finished principle photography and he was wielding a walking stick as a result of the film. His condition looked so painful that I regret not having offered him basic hatha yoga instruction. Danny Glover rocks. Just a few minutes of Mister Rodriguez' effort makes my skin crawl. Too much money, too much fake passion. I don't want to ever, in experiencing the movie experience, want to see actors acting. I don't believe any of the people playing on screen though whoever the chick is somehow I believe her. Plump directors sitting in chairs and looking at screens? Seriously? Your 31 minutes saved me about 99 minutes. Good work.
