I'm a 27-year-old man, I mostly listen to metal, and I've never seen a High School Musical movie or show, but when I first heard this song, I was instantly transported back to high school, reliving the feelings of my first heartbreak, and crying like a baby. It's like there was a devil on one shoulder telling me, "This is a corny song. You don't like pop. She's 17, singing about high school problems..." But then there was an angel on the other shoulder saying, "This is one of the best songs you've ever heard." I went through a roller coaster of emotions after I heard this song.

There's a hidden honest maturity in her voice and the lyrics that touches a lot of people whether they are aware of it or not. The younger generation long to feel kind of love she sings about and the older ones know the bittersweet emotions heart break brings. We are all human in the end and somehow I think this song subconsciously evokes certain feelings for a lot of people. This song is a great example of how music connects people. I'm happy she broke through all the other mainstream pop stuff going around these days. I want more from her and singers like her to come forward and hopefully add a little more diversity to popular music these days.

Such a milestone in the entire world of music. Rare indeed.

Wow. Really nice review. 1) U caught the car's safety chime being speed up into the song tempo. When I 1st heard the song I thought it was really clever to do. It seems not many caught that. 2) U pointed out the grammar choices & how she used "street" & not "proper". I loved how she drops the F bomb in the bridge because in the end REAL always beats REFINED, especially when it comes to emotions. 3) U caught the unresolved piano chord at the end. I personally love unresolved song endings because they cause tension, & leave the listener wanting more. Last thing to add is u can clearly hear there's NO auto-tune on her vocals. It's all her pitch, which is so refreshing to hear in mainstream music. Consider me subscribed...

So, I got the skinny on this song from my daughter who’s a huge HSM fan. She and her costar hit it off fantastically. She was seventeen and he was twenty one. They didn’t date and he said let’s wait till your eighteen. She turned eighteen and he immediately started dating another girl. Basically, sorry, I lied. She wrote this in response. Very touching.

@@DenvarShay Released in 2021? Why not restrict it to February 3 - 5, 2021 by bands from the island of Crete? ;-) XD Let's see - albums I've heard released in the last 5 weeks that aren't a teenage girl bemoaning life sounding the same as every other teenage girl bemoaning life... Well, Storm Seeker put out a good album this year. I saw Korpiklaani released an album, but haven't listened to it yet; from their past work, I don't expect it to disappoint. Feskarn put out some enjoyable music on Raven's Way. Pretty sure Transatlantic's latest offering was released this year, but not 100% on that & am too lazy to look up to see if it fits your stipulation - though that does sound similar to their previous albums being pretty much pure prog metal. Dragony's last album was also very enjoyable. I know I've heard more that I've liked recently, but can't think of them at the moment. There are many bands/albums/songs from the past that are absolutely amazing, assuming you relax your 2021 release constraint. Epica, Sabaton, various Minniva covers, Orion's Reign, Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, Nightwish, Lordi, Corvus Corax, Timeless Miracle, Instanzia, Stratovarius, Helloween, Blind Guardian, Manowar, Stormwarrior, Turisas, Dragonforce, Powerwolf, Winterstorm, Therion, & Iron Mask are just some of those that pretty much never leave my work stereo - what I listen to depends on my mood. (I know there are more - I just can't remember the names... got a cheat-sheet printed out & hung on my wall. =) )

@@RealRuler2112 As someone who drummed for a metal band for 10+ years, played guitar for another, bass for another, I can appreciate your taste...but it illustrates why you're disappointed by another pop singing female. My playlist has Jazz, Country, 20 different subgenres of Metal, EDM, Pop, Classical, Blues, Rock...bit of everything. If I can connect to it emotionally, it's a good listen. I find this song to have a bit more emotion and feel than a lot of what's coming out right now, and to me that makes it good.

I don’t have a lot of specific memories about driving around with girls I’ve dated in the past, but I go driving to clear my head and think through whatever I happen to be dealing with at the time. So even though I don’t have those specific memories I do have memories of driving through certain areas while sorting through the shit in my head, so this song still hits me in a pretty profound way. It gets me emotional every time I hear it and it’s an absolutely superb song to listen to while you’re cruising around late at night. It’s gotta be a pretty humorous sight to see a guy in his early 30’s cruising late at night with this song booming over the stereo with the windows down while I’m singing along to it, like I do😂 I knew as soon as I heard it that this song was going on my late night cruising playlist, and it’s been there since. I'm just curious what your thoughts are on the EXPLOSIVE RISE from Disney+ Actor (famous) to legit (GLOBAL ICON) artist that transcends from hype to legendary artist that will most likely go into the Library of Congress? Winning Grammies, AMA, Brit Award, Time Magazine, 60 Minutes, etc. It may to too soon to say, but she has the trajectory to speak next to names like Judy Garland, Julie Andrews, Joan Jett, Celion Dion, Mariah Carey, Lady Gaga, etc., somebody that influences an entire culture. It just boggles my mind that for most people, being the lead on a Disney+ show is the peak of their human experience, and yet with Ms. Olivia, Disney+ was just a stepping stone to being something more significant.

Her emotion in the voice and riding that edge of breaking down really makes me think of Lara Fabian, and one tiny detail that I LOVE is the bum-bump of the kick drum in the bridge, around 15:10. It sounds like a heart, and with the long spaces in between beats evokes that feeling of a broken one, together with the cries she has in her singing. It's not my style but damn I can appreciate this. Excellent breakdown of how the production added to her voice, I've never listened to music that way, I usually zoom in on more detailed aspects of one instrument instead of the big whole! For recommendations: As always, Patty Gurdy, and especially her live version of her song "Run" at Lexington, or her one-take live version of Eurythmic's "Sweet Dreams". And Larkin Poe. Anything from their Tip o' the Hat cover series here on KZbin, or their original song "Bleach Blonde Bottle Blues", especially the live version from their porch pickin' stream, starting at 4:15 kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3-uqY2cf96tgbM&ab_channel=LarkinPoe Rebecca has the most amazing rock-bluesy voice, and her sister Megan is the Queen of slide guitar and does some amazing harmonies to Rebecca. Their live, stripped-down duo performances really showcase their amazingness.

The Rock Cover of "our last night" is epic and an amazing different approach to the lyrics ^^

Would love to see you do Opeth - Faith in Others if you haven’t already. Makes me emotional every time I listen to it and his voice is incredible

This song kinda reminds me of Maria Mena's music, it has the same semi-spoken quality with a lot of the vocals at the start of the song/verse, and the lyrics have the same kind of personal story-telling, that makes it compelling. I even think their voices are a bit alike as well.

If I could request any song by Kaleo. They’re an Icelandic pop-rock band and the lead’s voice is amazingly hearty and gravelly. I’d recommend “Alter ego” for a rock song, or “way down we go” or “save yourself” for a softer song
