The reputation of Napoli being unsafe belongs well and truly in the past. Things have changed a lot over the last 10-15 years…..and even when some areas were going through a dark time, all the good of the city outweighed the “bad” …..everything Napoli is being celebrated for now, it has always had. It has always been a wonderful place. It has my whole heart. There is nowhere else like it l. The tourist boom has been kind of a shock but not a surprise, a city like Napoli was never going to be kept in the shadows for long when it has so much to offer. It’s vibe has no equal and it’s people are the salt of the earth. The love it receiving now makes me so happy for it. It always deserved this. Napoli Sotterranea is one of my favourite things to do in the city. It is eternally fascinating. This was such a beautiful video. Thank you for capturing the soul of Napoli xx

I went to Naples two weeks ago. Coming from the UK, I was a bit unsure of how I would find it, having heard over the years it was a crime-ridden cesspit with piles of trash everywhere. In fact, I found it to be very beautiful and I did not feel unsafe at all. I did not find it to be any dirtier than any other big city I've been in - I'd even say some of the cities in the UK are dirtier. Yes, there was a lot of graffiti but if you've been to any European city (particularly in Southern Europe); Lisbon, Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Athens in my own experience, it really is no worse by comparison. I loved wandering around the streets and some of the architecture is beautiful. Great shops and places to eat and drink, great food at excellent value also. The functioning chaos of the traffic is also quite entertaining. Take the bus round the coast and the views across the Bay to Vesuvius are absolutely spectacular.

Thank you Olive. We have just returned from a week in Naples and Procida. We took your advice and walked from the Port to the Castle - lots of steps on a hot and humid day, but if you’re fit and adventurous and you want to step off the ‘tourist trail’ this is the way to get there. The views are stunning - and the funicular trip back down makes the ascent worth it. We followed this up with a trip to the restaurant you recommended (around the corner from the main entrance). Initially it was closed but as we walked away, they opened for us. We were the only couple for the first 30 minutes and then suddenly every seat was filled. The food was magnificent and we mentioned your video to Alexia (our charming host who worked the room with great charm and hospitality). Once again, thank you for the tip.

This is a delight. I was in Naples many months in the 70s in the Navy. It was mesmerizing to me then, just as it was for you. I never got over it. I never even went to the famous tourist sites out of the city because I never felt the need to leave Naples (this was probably a mistake) . . . So much beauty and history.

@@oliviaelenat It was fascinating to me back in the 70s. The Spanish Quarter, for instance, looked very different then, almost medieval, and though there was crime there was also a timelessness throughout Naples culture, and joy and art in abundance. I did your walk to St Elmo a few times. Naples was a bright spot of my Navy years.

For mysterious reasons, tourists are attracted to the poorest neighborhoods of Naples (which have the almost unique characteristic in Europe of occupying the center and not the outskirts of the city) and they don't even know that a rich city exists. You have visited a small part of it and you are already an exception, but the truly wealthy residentces are those of via Filangieri and via dei Mille, of Mergellina and Posillipo which no one knows about. Yet they are very beautiful with their Art Nouveau architecture and represent the city's other side of the coin, as does the majestic Capodimonte woods with the summer palace and its centenary trees (equally ignored).
@oliviaelenat6 ай бұрын
Yes, I’ve noticed that too! In a way, it’s good that some areas remain more authentic and less crowded, but it often means people miss out on the full picture and judge based only on what’s famous, without even looking around the corner. Thank you for mentioning those areas, I will definitely keep them in mind for when I go back! 😊

@@oliviaelenat The incredible fact is that these are extremely large areas and not small remote locations; they then connect with the entire so-called "metropolitan city" which includes the islands and reaches up to Sorrento, hosting over three million inhabitants! I was in Naples for 5 days and I assure you it is not safe. Everyday we walked on the pavement which has any kind of trash, 💩, etc., people will look at you and they know that you are foreign to the place. Some man will stand in the middle of the pavement while we were walking with a lot of stuff and he wouldnt move like he's some kind of a boss and that happened many times to some areas we walked. People there are not tourist friendly. One night we were walking from the napoli station with my mini backpack, 3 men followed us, 2 men were walking close behind me and theres 1 man in front of us walking slowly trying to slow us down and I felt the zipper opening from my backpack, luckily theres only water there and umbrella, nothing important but it was a scary experience and mind you, we were walking in the main street which is very bright and a lot of store owner just standing on the side people watching and I know they saw what those men are doing but they didnt say anything. Dont believe on what influencer or vlogger will say that napoli is safe, it is not. I thought it was as i watched a video which the vlogger says napoli is safe, it is not. Dont believe it. Never again.

The clichés about Naples are created by the Italian press because Italy is a decidedly racist country towards the Neapolitans, not to mention the profound hatred that northern Italians have towards Naples, but we know that jealousy is a nuisance for others and a torment to themselves. it is not dangerous at all, it is like any other big city in europe, if we talk about pickpocketing, street thefts etc. cities like paris or rome could be more dangerous in this sense. if we talk about high-level crime, in this case it is the most dangerous city in europe, but the so-called camorra has nothing to do with the millions of tourists who visit naples. it operates at higher levels.
