hey Olive 🫒 Cabernet Sauvignon of bread and butter wines - I looked it up... it feels like a top notch one... you are excused, if you've had a few drops too many of it - I would have as well, in your place🍷🍷😎 I've been to Napa valley in 2017, but on a more profound errand: to marry a Californian woman... the short of it is a bit sad... I felt that I couldn't adjust to the culture, and eventually returned to Europe, ending abruptly my American dream, and my relationship went down alongside... of course there were more details, but not necessary for this comment... it was just a wee damper for me to enjoy your happy time there... let me just conclude: a visit is something different, than immersing yourself fully into the culture, in my experience... while watching, I mused about the difference between the Mediterranean and the Californian culture... definitely one is the depth and length of cultural evolution, visible and feasible e.g. in the architecture - Europe is splattered with Roman, Greek and Moorish buildings, but also more subtle habits, feelings and stories of the past... in the US the white-men history is fairly young in comparison... the buildings e.g. that you show in and around Napa, are truly beautiful, but lack a deep history... interesting for me was to learn, that this is a relief for the Americans, as they experience it as freedom from the past, while for them visiting Europe is very enjoyable, but there is also everywhere an odour of ancient times, and after a while they are happy to return to their home country... 🏛 - 🗽 sorry Olive, I stop now - this is more about my background story... so happy to see you enjoying the trip... oh, and I see you are already at 1.1k watchers - thats 10% up from just about a few weeks ago...!! ...looking forward to Part II of Napa Valley, and maybe a Miami-Cocktail?! 🍹😎🧡

Hello Jorn! 👋😁🍷 I remember you mentioning your story and California before, but I had no idea this actually happened in Napa Valley! I can imagine how my experience might bring back a lot of memories and thoughts for you, and not seem as cheerful as it would for someone seeing it for the first time. 😔 Having spent most of my life in Bucharest, I’ve always wondered if there’s a place where I’d feel better, where I really see myself living... 🌍 So, whenever I visit somewhere new, I always catch myself thinking, "Could I live here? What would life be like?" It’s what happened with London... I absolutely loved it as a tourist, but living there was a whole different experience, though I still miss it sometimes! 🏙 So, I get how different it must be when you're trying to actually build a life somewhere else. For me, the U.S. has always been more about the books, movies, music, and TV shows I grew up with. 📚🎬🎶 Even the cartoons I watched were American! 😄 It’s strange, but despite not having been there at the time, it feels like a part of my childhood/teenage years. I’m not sure how I’d adjust to the culture myself, but I think it really depends on having the right people around me. Thank you for watching, and I really hope it didn’t bring back too many tough memories. 😔 And yes, I can’t believe I’ve already reached 1.1k subscribers! 🥂💛🌻

What is the incline like on the Pyreness? Trying to train for 2026/2027...did my first incline at a mountain today and it kicked my ass!!
@oliviaelenat
@oliviaelenat 3 күн бұрын
The incline on the Pyrenees from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Roncesvalles was pretty challenging for me, especially with a heavy backpack.. it made a big difference compared to other hikes I’ve done without one. The elevation gain is around 1,365 meters (4,478 feet) over about 20 kilometers (12 miles), so it's a steep climb, particularly at the start. However, I hadn’t trained before starting the Camino (I’ve done a few hikes here and there, but not in the months right before the Camino), and I managed to get through it. If you do some training beforehand, you should be fine. And... that’s only for one day; the Camino gets much easier after that! 😊

We met during the ‘complaining about the highway’ stage! 😂 And yes, those were the early days when I was just hoping the channel would get to where it is now... crazy to think it actually happened! 😲 I hope you’re doing well, and remember: WE ARE THE CAMINO!!! 😂

Alo, dear Olive 😃🫒, this was really interesting for me, as I know so little about Eastern European countries... I've seen your country-side clips (like of the Via Transilvanica or the Raven's Nest), but Bucharest brings home much more the history, and the social and political identity of your homeland, and it was your home town too... were you born there as well? If so: is your home of childhood still there?... 👶 ...there are of course still omnipresent the footprints of the Ceaucescu era, which ended just mere 35 years ago... it made me sad to hear, how he 'erased' the old town centre to build that staggering parliament building... I wonder how it looked like before... maybe a bit like been shown in the village museum close to the end of the video? Some of those old buildings remind me even a bit of Japanese and Nepalese temples... reminders of ancient travel & trading routes probably, like the Silk Road... The walk through the central alleys and parks of the city was indeed relaxed and spacious... outstanding that enormous book store, with the beautiful light installations - I would definitely gravitate to that one, when visiting ... 🏠 Because of the focus on the capital, I started to ponder on questions about what today's generation might think, reflect, strive for... what are main subjects of discussion in Bucharest, at the university, and also at the restaurants, pubs and squares? What do the young Romanians think and want? Is there a fear of totalitarianism rising again, with the war in the north? ...there are direct borders to the Ukraine... ☮ That could maybe be another route for you to open conversations on your channel... interviewing young people / students about what they think and wish for the future...🎤 Thanks again, Olive - I love your videos, as you know... and I was also very aware of your musical choices, switches and turns - very well choreographed... 🎶 keep on raving, travelling, and... maybe becoming a bit of an ambassador of Romania 😎💖🌄 Oh - and I'm envisioning the transition beyond the magical 1.000!!!

Haha, Ceausescu's favourite word! 😄🏛 I’m glad to hear you found the information interesting! I must admit, I don’t know much about other Eastern European countries either, since I’ve always chosen to travel to more popular destinations instead, but I’m hoping to visit them in the near future. 🌍✈ Yes, I was born in Bucharest, and I still have my childhood home. 😊 Regarding Ceausescu’s era being quite recent, it’s a bit surreal to think about how my parents' generation lived their first 30-40 years under communism without knowing anything else. About the city before the Palace of the Parliament, the area had a big market and looked more like the old center now. The colorful houses at the Village Museum are typical of the countryside in other areas of Romania. 🌳🏡 As for the younger generations, millennials were the first to have access to the 'outside world', especially with the rise of the internet. Some had access, while others didn’t, depending on where they lived and their family. I think generally those growing up with internet access and American TV series tend to be more open-minded and fit in better with western societies, which is also why many have moved abroad. In contrast, those without it have been influenced by communism indirectly, by only interacting with their close environment, and therefore have a more traditional mindset. They tend to be less open to change, less self-aware, and are more reluctant or judgmental towards unconventional life choices, like traveling full-time instead of settling down, as an example. This is a personal observation and it's of course not the case for everyone. Younger generations’ interests are influenced by the era of technology, which I think is leading to more similarity between cultures. 📱💻 Currently, there isn’t any fear of rising totalitarianism, and the likelihood of war is low since Romania, unlike Ukraine, is a member of both the EU and NATO, which would involve many other countries if anything were to happen. Thank you for your suggestion about interviewing young people, it’s a great idea! However, I feel I need to grow my channel a bit more before confidently interviewing people. 😁 Thank you so much for your support! 💜🌆

@@jornspirit Oh, I was talking about "Alo." 😄 I thought you used it intentionally. In Romanian, "Alo" is used either to answer the phone or to get people's attention. It's equivalent to "hello" only in these contexts, so in all his videos, Ceausescu would say, "Alo, alo!" to get people to listen to him. In that context, it’s like saying, "Hey, silence everyone, I'm speaking!" but less formal and less respectful towards the crowd. Nobody really uses it like that, but Ceausescu did in his speeches. It's the standard phone greeting though. 😁

For mysterious reasons, tourists are attracted to the poorest neighborhoods of Naples (which have the almost unique characteristic in Europe of occupying the center and not the outskirts of the city) and they don't even know that a rich city exists. You have visited a small part of it and you are already an exception, but the truly wealthy residentces are those of via Filangieri and via dei Mille, of Mergellina and Posillipo which no one knows about. Yet they are very beautiful with their Art Nouveau architecture and represent the city's other side of the coin, as does the majestic Capodimonte woods with the summer palace and its centenary trees (equally ignored).
@oliviaelenat

Yes, I’ve noticed that too! In a way, it’s good that some areas remain more authentic and less crowded, but it often means people miss out on the full picture and judge based only on what’s famous, without even looking around the corner. The reputation of Napoli being unsafe belongs well and truly in the past. Things have changed a lot over the last 10-15 years…..and even when some areas were going through a dark time, all the good of the city outweighed the “bad” …..everything Napoli is being celebrated for now, it has always had. It has always been a wonderful place. It has my whole heart. There is nowhere else like it l. The tourist boom has been kind of a shock but not a surprise, a city like Napoli was never going to be kept in the shadows for long when it has so much to offer.
