My name is Olivia Hops, and in today's video I talk about 6 hacks/tips that can help you manage your Autistic Traits/Symptoms and help you stay regulated.
The 6 Tips are listed below:
1. Sensory Hacks (Wear Headphones/Sunglasses/ETC)
2. Take Breaks (also from Social Media)
3. Learn How to Say "No"
4. Go to Therapy
5. Spoon Method (Do things you like to counterbalance the things you don't)
6. Start Journaling
Please remember, I am not a doctor and these suggestions are just based off of my personal experience as one person on the Autism Spectrum. Every Autistic Person is different, so some of these tips may not work for you.

Pro-tip regarding journalling and not using sentences from a life-long, failed journaler: DO NOT follow any "convention" that does not suit your purpose. As soon as I stopped caring about spelling grammar size space lines, journalling began working. It was incredibly liberating!

Many autistic people likely already do this and may not realize it but embrace echolalia for the conversation tool that it is. It was advice I received to get through job interviews. Repeat the last phrase of a question to give your brain time to process a response to the question. It can also let others know you’re listening or that you understand them in a conversation when your nonverbal cues of communication aren’t typical. Providing noise to a conversation also can help fight against being interrupted which I image is a widely share frustration among the autistic people who may be reading this comment. The embrace communicating in the ways that work best with how you operate and allow you to be heard and understood.

Something that really helped me, particularly with the frequency and severity of my meltdowns, was prioritizing sleep. I know naps were mentioned as a type of "break", but this goes beyond that. Not getting enough sleep causes so many problems. It makes me more sensitive to triggers, hinders my ability to make decisions, decreases my emotional control, and increases the likelihood that I'll make mistakes. All my major meltdowns can be traced back to bouts of poor sleep or sleep deprivation. I take more naps now than I ever have, and I'm 1000x happier and easier to get on with because of it.

I have a funny habit where I wear one of my earbuds without music when working and sometimes out, if it’s really loud I just put in both sometimes but usually wearing just one make it feel simpler to listen to things. I pay attention to the things on one side and don’t worry about the other ear haha.

Ooh I’ve been doing this a TON lately! I got a pair of loops recently & ive found I prefer wearing them one at a time, unless I really wanna zone in (and even then, I usually want something playing in an earbud). And then yeah, I just usually wear an earbud in the other ear and idk WHY it feels different and so good but it does!

You might like calmer ear buds for the movies, they have transparent ones so they aren’t as noticeable and they filter out the distressing tones.

For people who are sensitive to light, you can get coloured lenses. It could be because of Irlen Syndrome, my optician thinks I have this but they did a generic test called EZ Reader and gave me coloured lenses from that as the Irlen lenses are way more expensive. The test also determines which colour to go for as everyone has a different range that they find the most comfortable.

Speaking of wearing sunglasses if you have sensitivity to night lighting especially with driving at night you can use night glasses with the yellow or Orange tinting. As far as a therapist goes if you see one make sure it’s a therapist who specializes in Autism and Aspergers. I had to learn that the hard way. The ones who don’t specialize in those areas can be biased as well. Also as far as ear plugs go I would recommend using to work or shooting ones that are plastic/rubber not foam. They are kind of like the music ear buds.

Hi! So I have 7/10 characteristics of ASD. I so appreciate your videos. I can highly relate to this video. I wear headphones to the store, I journal, and I definitely DON’T wear anything I don’t like. As a kid I used to say, “I can’t wear these pants, they’re making me angry! I also wish I could find shoes for winter I didn’t have to wear socks with. I. Hate. Everything. About. Socks! I swear I must have autism but there’s only one person in my town who diagnosis adults

Congratulations on your engagement! I am not diagnosed with autism. I do find your videos super helpful. Ear buds and noise cancelling headphones are a recent discovery for me, unfortunately I get a lot of pain if I wear them for more than an hour as I'm very pressure sensitive but they do make some events a bit more bareable and I'm less likely to zone out.

I love looking at comments and am always amazed at those who are catching on to why they feel like they do. My husband is a professional Para for austic kids at a middle school. The spectrum is large. Some don't speak a word, some have meltdowns with tantrums. As the boys grow and get stronger, they break tablets, furniture, make messes etc. His job is to continue to teach and help with their schooling. Some are downs syndrome Some are great at math or writing, or art. Drawing amazing pictures. Kudos Olivia for a wonderful you tube channel and all the people you are helping. 💕🙏😇🥰

I've really been enjoying your quite a few videos that I've been watching over the last couple of weeks. When you started talking about having difficulty saying "No" I wanted to tell you or fellow watchers/listeners about a book that my son read and then bought for me. It's called "Set Boundaries, Find Peace," by Nedra Tawwab. New York Times bestseller, 263 pages. Easy reading, makes total sense. I know that it's not necessarily an easy thing to say no/set boundaries, but this is a pretty good reference guide . A quote that I recently saw said, "I didn't tell you that it'd be easy; I said that it would be worth it." Thanks, Olivia!

It was really hard to watch you in that short clip of the meltdown, my past experiences looked very much like that. It triggered me hard to see your emotional distress, but at least i can be certain now that what i went through recently was a meltdown. I have a 7 year old son who's very likely also on the spectrum, as i recognize a lot of his behaviors and mannerisms from myself. His school held an end of year picnic on school grounds that parents and kids were supposed to bring lunch for themselves. I spend most of the late morning and afternoon getting together a nice picnic. My neurotypical husband, myself and our son had planned to go together. But minutes before we needed to head out, my husband said he was feeling pretty sick and that he'd have to cancel. Our son still very much wanted to attend the picnic, i felt too guilty to say no, so off the two of us went. I thought I'd be able to manage well enough as the school was 5 minutes away. When we got close to the school grounds, it became very apparent that the event was much more crowded than I'd anticipated, they were also playing very loud music over speakers. My kid wandered off for a moment to greet his teacher and classmates while i tried to secure us a spot to sit. I'd brought a picnic blanket with me, but the school had provided wooden benches with tables that were spread all over. I realized that every single table had at least 2 people sitting at them already, many who i knew vaguely or not at all. I was feeling a lot of pressure to choose a spot somewhere instead of standing around, but felt equally stressed by the prospect of just sitting down. I decided to ask an acquaintance if I could sit with her, no problem, but almost immediately 3 others sat down at that same table and it suddenly felt too full and like i was intruding, even though I'd asked. It became too much all of a sudden and I was stressing out hard. i turned away from the table and stood close to the outer wall to regain my nerves, facing it. But it was already too late, i was panicking and trying to hold back tears, trying to calm myself down wasn't working, i was stuck in place, unable to move at all. When the loud music stopped and a teacher addressed the crowd asking for everyone to please sit down, i panicked even harder. I tried to turn around but immediately felt incredibly overwhelmed by the sight of so many people and had to turn back towards the wall. I was standing between picnic tables, not close to the exit. I felt trapped and couldn't think. a teacher came up to me from behind and told me my son wasn't dealing well with the crowdedness either, unsurprisingly. I knew he was likely feeling overwhelmed as well, but I couldn't do much in the state i was in, which i felt terrible about. I finally managed to rip myself loose from the wall and grabbed my son's hand, we marched right back out weaving through the crowd because we HAD TO. Half a street away we sat down on the curb to calm down while i called my husband. He came to get us not long after, even though he was feeling sick, he was very understanding and patient. But i felt pretty ashamed and like a bad mom after that. We ended up eating the picnic i made in the living room, which was much better.

@fbxn Жыл бұрын
You were in tune with your kid's feelings, and this is so important for them to feel valid and normal for stressing out. You would have been a bad mom if you bullied your kid for not coping with crowded events. Don t be hard on yourself, feeling seen, understood and having another human being next to us stressing out just like us about apparently minor things that other people just find fun and easy is so validating❤

Pro-tip regarding sunglasses: Meares-Irlen Syndrome screening helped my (entirely ND, predominantly dyslexic) family. Colour and tint intensity can make a big difference. Black/grey tones make me incredibly irritated, so I thought I hated sunglasses, even though they looked so good on my dad (and made him happy ;) It just clicked that he wore them as a coping strategy, duh!) When I wear amber, I have patience! My daughter wears a purplish, dark tint. My sons both wear greenish, my aunts are all versions of beige.

But...you don't need to pay for "the real" diagnosis! Although it's cool if you can. Just try on a bunch and concentrate on how you FEEL in them, not in how you look. Do something stressful (read the fine print on something, ask for assistance, remember the spot on the back of your neck that gets itchy and don't touch it) and consider the quality of the experience. I don't think I am as "deep" as that sounded.

Congratulations on your engagement! I wish you both a beautiful time and a best wedding you can imagine! :-D What helps me with social media (and other apps) is the app timer on android phones. (under digital wellbeing or something like that) You can set a certain amount of time per day for each app and when that time is up, you can add 10 minutes, after those the app closes automatically and cannot be started until the next day. Naturally you can just increase the time and then use the app again immediatly but this tool helps to regulate the amount of time spent on each app. ("What? I've already spent 2 hours on app x?!") I found this very helpful :-)

I don't like Therapy. Childhood trauma I think, diagnosed at age 7 and that when all the hell started for me. Behavior conditioning with more punishment than rewards all started with a psychologist. It's deep in me to not trust them now. So how can pay for therapy and have deep seated distrust. It's irrational though but still there.

There is no way to “recover” from autism, it is a way the brain is wired.

Kumusta, Erick? From one Filipino to another, I think ASD is not a condition that needs to be "cured", but rather, our neurotypical Filipino society should accept that some of our contrymen are neurodivergent, perhaps including Yours Truly. I suspect myself to be autistic, but as you may know, as much as I would like to get an official diagnosis, our mental health system here is trash, for the lack of a better term. It's how our brains are wired, and what we can do aside from detection, diagnosis, and therapy is for us to be educated that neurodivergent Filipinos are not "loko-loko", "may saltik", or "nag-iinarte" and to accept them in our rather neurotypical society. I did make a video regarding neurodiversity in the Filipino context. Please check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q5umZo2Na7Fng80

Did you say that babies crying bothered you? Because I never had children because I knew I would be a terrible parent I can Stan maybe and everyone thinks that makes me a terrible person but if I would have been a terrible parent then that is a good excuse to not have babies I think I'm old now and it doesn't matter but I'm just saying a baby crying like a kid under four I can't handle once they're four this is a joke that I have long standing summit will be funny it's not so much but anyway I say until they're four when they can stand on a chair and help me with the dishes and wipe their own butts and tell me what's wrong with them instead of crying about it and having me to try to figure it out with that screaming going on yeah that's that's me seems terrible I know but I think I did the right thing and I don't think it's really my fault I don't choose to hate kids I don't hate kids hey babies loud noises and in the ability to communicate I have a hard enough time with the world around me

Not wanting to be a parent doesn't make you a bad person. It's a big responsibility and if you feel like that's not something you want to take on, that's perfectly fine. If you really do want to be a parent but just don't like babies, it's possible to foster or adopt an older child. But if you would rather not be a parent at all, there's nothing wrong with that decision either.

Autism comes in a spectrum, so people can have different amount and different kinds of autistic traits. Not all autistic people are the same. I'm sorry you''re having problems with your child, but that doesn't mean that all autistic people are similar to your child.

@Radhe Krishna Hi, I'm not sure if you are still struggling with this, but maybe I can offer some potty training advice? because my son wanted nothing to do with it for the longest time. He was around 4 when it clicked he would be more comfortable during the day, showing no interest and sometimes fear of the toilet flush because he didn't understand. So I explained how the toilet works and it got easier and easier for him as time progressed. If you haven't already my first suggestion, try an incentive chart with fun stickers so she can see her weekly progress in real time. At the end of the week if she does well, depending on your beliefs she could do something fun like go to a new park to play, get a treat, or pick out a new toy every once in a while. I also did toy cars with my son and it worked well. The main thing is- the more relaxed you are about it, the less pushed and pressured she will feel. The other half of this, as a mom I understand where you are coming from. If life gets frustrating taking care of her, a trusted relative or caregiver who understands her individual needs so you can get out of the room even for an hour is helpful to your mental state because you could be suffering from caregivers burnout. I'd have my husband watch him while I ran to the grocery to just breathe once a week. Waited to go late so I avoided the crowds because of anxiety I deal with. I hope this is helpful information, if it's still relevant to your situation

you know by copying counseling techniques from your ongoing counselors and therapists to play "life coach", i am concerned that you are unnecessarily putting lives in danger and at risk. i don't know that you have the qualifications to know what you are doing. do you have a confidentiality clause in case things do not go to plan or in the case that its not the best fit? do you know the difference between a coach and a therapist? can people trust and securely talk to you in a way that you will not pitch a fit and exploit their issues publicly into something that gives you profit on your videos?
