I have been using the GM 70-200 ii + 2x teleconverter for a year now and its results are epic. It definitely still leaves some more reach to be desired for photography, but when using it to film video you can use crop mode and clear image zoom at the same time to get 900mm in 4k and 1200mm in 1080p. This setup is one of the most versatile and light weight options for wildlife videography, and with a 77mm filter thread you won't need to spend a fortune on filters. If you do not have a 70-200 or a 200-600 i would only get the 70-200 +2x tc if you do other things like street or portraits because ever since i got the TC i almost never take it off.

I have the 70-200mm GM II, the 100-400mm GM, and the 200-600mm G lenses. And I love all of these lenses. In the past I tried teleconverters but was never satisfied with the results. So, I gave up on them. But, in planning my next trip, I decided to take the 70-200mm GM II and reluctantly purchased the Sony 1.4x teleconverter to use with it. To my surprise the 1.4x produces excellent results with the 70-200mm GM II. And it's earned a permanent spot in my bag.

70-200 f2.8/f4, what do you have? And, if I buy 70-200 f2.8 ii / recently launched f4 ii & a f1.4 convertor, will it be as good as Sony 100-400 mm lens for wild life photography?
@PhotoTrekr Жыл бұрын
@@FactNight The Sony 100-400 GM is an excellent lens. The 70-200 GM II is also an excellent lens and it takes teleconverters well. Only some of the people who got early copies of the 70-200 f4 G II tried it with a teleconverter. If you can try all of them then you can determine which ones are for you. FWIW, I'm thinking about selling my 100-400 GM and ordering the 2x teleconverter to try. If I used the 100-400 GM a lot I would keep that lens.

This video is relevant for me right now. Excellent comparison on the 200-600. I find the same conclusions with the 200-600 and 1.4x TC, but not quite as severe. Cropping is about the same as using the TC, but acquiring focus is much slower. What I would like to see, however, is a comparison of a cropped image with the 70-200 vs an image with the 70-200 + 2.0 TC. I currently own the 100-400 and am considering the 70-200 with 2.0 TC as a lighter, more versatile option. FYI, the 100-400 with 1.4 TC has slightly better IQ results than cropping, although focus acquisition is a bit slower.

This was a great video breakdown, answered questions I didn't know I had! Not only was it conveniently timed, as I was looking into getting the 2x convertor for the 200-600mm lens, but I didn't realize how soft it would be at 1200mm or that the aperture doubles. The 70-200mm + 2x looks enticing with that low aperture!

Actually the 1.4tx works pretty well with the 200-600G lens, mostly in terms of sharpness and AF speed, and with a "low res" camera, like the Alpha 7mark4 or the Alpha 9, you get a lot of flexibility in terms of focal lenghts available. Of course the best scenario is with GM lenses, like the 400mm f/2.8, the 600mm f/4, the 100-400 and finally the 70-200mm f/2.8.

This is a great Video. Everyone becomes obsessed with reach. I know in the modern era with 150-600 and 150-600 people still add TC's to get the 1200mm at f13 etc. The ISO shoots high, IQ affected by noice and atmospheric distortions and the output is sub par, maybe this is the time to put the camera down take out the Binox and watch the bird animal or take a wide shot and be creative. Still be lieve nothing beats wide aperture, more light, better focus and if you use TC's or Zoom lens in general, get close to your subject or shoot wide. That is why the 70-200 f2.8 with a TC 1.4 or 2.0 makes more sense than the 200-600/150-600/100-500 that offer f6.3 or f7.1 The reason the Nikon 200-500 f5.6 is a low cost diamond lens. Yes you can fix noice with AI. Many Wildlife photographers live on the 400 f2.8, I for many years lived of the 300 f2.4 with TC 1.4 (420 f4)

I think the 200-600 works well with 1.4x TC, in most cases from what ive read. In certain cases where bright highlights are involved it can show more loss of contrast, but for most other cases the results are good and you gain resolution. The whole goal ultimately is to get more sharpness in image with a TC than what you'd get by cropping in to 140%, if not then using the TC isnt helping.

My current wildlife setup is the Alpha 1 with the 70-200 GM OSS II and the 200-600 G OSS. I've looked at the TC's both 1.4x and 2.0x and they just can't come close to the quality of shooting native and cropping. Even without super res in Lr or Ai... add in some Ai super res and there's just no point in any situation to get a TC nowadays.

Thanks for the video. As a predominantly walk around bird shooter starting out, I opted for the 100-400GM with the a7iv. Initially I also purchased the x2TC (talked into it by a salesperson) and then more recently the x1.4TC. For me this pretty much covers what these two lens do once you include cropped mode. One lens suits me and the weight is good. However for small birds in heavy shrubbery a few metres away I do wonder about the advantages of having a 2.8 aperture lens to keep ISO down. As soon as you add TC’s to this lens you are pretty much at the 100-400GM capability. On the 100-400GM with the x2TC you definitely need very good light but the x1.4TC I find pretty useful. Have you used the 100-400GM? Thanks again for your videos, always interesting and very different to the countryside I see in south east Queensland. Just an update. After reading an article on aspect ratio I have tried shooting birds at 1:1. In the EVF you get a 1.2x image magnification but in pp you get the full 3:2 image at 33 mp. With or without a TC the slightly magnified image seems to help with eye AF. As I usually crop anyway with small birds I find it pretty handy. More playing around to be done. I’m interested to know how you go if you try it.

Switching from canon R5 to sony A1, the choice of lenses for practicability was an equation viewed from many aspects! After much research and documentation, I have come to the conclusion that the 70-200 v2 / 400 mm 2.8 / 1.4 & 2.0 TC's are the perfect combination both for photographing birds in flight and for landscape. Of course adding 20mm 1.8 was the icing on the cake! For a small difference in weight, I would always choose 400mm 2.8 vs 200-600! Maybe it's good to mention, they all stay together in one packback and the two sony A1 cameras are always attached to the two large lenses inside/outside the Shimoda backpack! Just sometimes and rarely I'm switching one of he camera from 400 mm to 20mm and this is happening when I'm shooting landscape. Good review!

My experience was that as long you didn't try and shoot wide open, it delivered acceptable results for social media/small screen use. However, when I returned home to my 200-600mm (without teleconverter), it was noticeable how much better the results were, particularly wide open. Having used the 2x on the 200-600mm, the jury is still out of the results. It definitely degrades optical quality (obviously) but is it enough to stop larger end use? I'm not sure yet.

I had the Sony 200-600mm, but I did not like it, too big and heavy together with the problems with the stabilizer on my Camera, so I sold it. Sony need to make compact light prime Tele Lenses, fx 300mm 4.0, 400mm 4.5 and 500mm 5.6, Sony should also made Tele Converters 1.4x and 2x for the excellent Sony 135mm 1.8 GM !!! Tamron have made a patent on a 350mm 4.0 which will be very nice ! For now I use my very good analog prime Tele Lenses.

Love your channel and content Olle, always great to watch! Would you have any thoughts on this tele with the 70-200 f/4? I love the size / weight advantage of that lens and the macro capability opening options too. I have the 200-600 based on your recommendation and love that lens, but I find myself going back to my APSC Fuji X-T3 with the 70-300 a lot for the size and weight as a grab and go camera for short walks. I'd love to get a similar setup going with my Sony gear and think the 70-200 f/4 w. 2x teleconvertor might be where I land. Keep up the great work! Greets from Vancouver!

a noob question...what do you usually use 70-200 range for? i find more than 100 too close for landscape and less than 300 very situational for wildlife tho much easier to bring to bear (im using aps-c so the "useful" range might be higher on a full frame)

Great video Olle, but ive toying with the idea of getting the 100-400 GM as it fits right in the middle of theses 2....do you have the 100-400 and if so whats your thoughts?

Aha! This is the combo I use for wildlife photography. I do miss having more light but the Sony a7IV handles high ISO very well. There are rumors for a Sony FE 100-400 Mark II (lighter & with internal zoom). 🤞🏽 Cool video, Ollie! Thanks!

The FE4/70-200mm G OSS is not compatible with either TC converter unfortunately. One of the reasons why I sold it and upgrade to the F 2.8 version.

as an international traveler who still wants to shoot huge zoom I would never buy such a lens. Instead, I use the sony APSC 70-350mm lens, equivalent to up to 525mm zoom full frame! That lens is 60%-70% smaller and lighter, with nearly the same effective zoom! Try carrying this brick on planes, around town, and for 8 hours inconspicuously around the globe. Forget it! I would love to see a comparison between this lens and the sony 70-350mm apsc lens, that produces great images.

I bought both 1.4 and 2x converters and did extensive tests with my A1, 70-200 GM II and 200-600 G OSS. I sent both converters back !!!! Focusing was slower and image quality sucked. They are made for fixed, prime lenses. Better to crop and use Topaz DeNoise and Gigapixel. …..

Pro tip....once you beyond a certain focal length resolution falls off rapidly, meaning you can get the exact same picture by just using a higher megapixel sensor and cropping.
@Adlore5 ай бұрын
You're not referring to digital zoom, are you?
@Tugela605 ай бұрын
@Adlore No, I am referring to using a higher megapixel camera. Increasing focal length beyond a certain point leads to image degradation, you might as well just crop in, IQ will be more or less the same. Adding those adapters is essentially the same thing as cropping in. It is much simpler to just have a high megapixel sensor and not worry about farting around with extenders.

You do not need the 1.4 teleconverter with a Sony because a button assigned to APS-C that is 1.5. The Sony FE 24- 240mm is a but have on a daily carry because in APS-C it is 36-360mm, to think about it you will be shooting F/8 to F/11 so you will be in that range any way!
@mattwu78842 ай бұрын
Super 35 mode you already lost half of pixel. It's different from TC that still shoot at full size.

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN WTH THIS MEANS: If you are using a lens with the Optical SteadyShot™ (OSS) feature, then the In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) or SteadyShot selection of the camera will be unavailable My Sony FE 4.5-5.6/70-300 G OSS lens has a switch on the barrel marked "Optical Steady Shot: On/Off" My A7R4A has an option of turning IBIS (in body image stabilization) on and off. Question: When IBIS (in body image stabilization) is turned on, should the Optical Steady Shot switch on the lens barrel be turned on or off? Note: I have seen statements to the effect that IBIS and lens stabilization should not be used together. Does this apply to the A7R4A ? They work together. Here is the explanation from Sony. ”If you are using a lens with the Optical SteadyShot™ (OSS) feature, then the In Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) or SteadyShot selection of the camera will be unavailable. When both the camera and lens have the feature, the lens stabilization overrides the menu system of the camera and the systems work in conjunction with each other to provide a 5-axis stabilization system. If you connect a lens that does not have the SteadyShot feature or turn off the feature on a lens that does, then the feature selection is available within the camera menu and the camera.”
