I have one and to me it was a bit of a disappointment, as was the torpedo. Possibly my examples and they are not in the best tune, but still. I’d rather the Rhinmettal KST or Optima elite 3, or better yet my beloved Erika 5. Yesterday I pulled down my Hermes 3000 and it reminded me that yes indeed, it is a fine machine too. Getting back to the Alpina it does have some premium features, like the paper bail and build quality. The return lever is a bit of a gimmick, but nice enough. I don’t know, for some reason it just doesn’t all add up for me.

Found loose nut on margin rack, glad I noticed that before applying air, tightened nut while applying upward pressure on rack, fixed issue with hanging on the bell lever arm. Remington QR, second one I found. Sticky stuck tab stops or set/clear fingers can cause carriage stick/stuck issues too.

Awesome Information, Im servicing a Sm9 with a Intermittent jammed on the left side key latches when its shift to upper case, will oil and look for any binding, Thank you for your knowledge!

I was recently donated one of these in mint physical condition. The keys are a little seized, but nothing unfixable and there's no physical damage. Only wear to the supplier stamp. It even still has the little wooden brush in the case lid. No key, but that's fairly standard. Truly a nice looking machine.

i'm back to typewritting after a break of 34 years. i found olivetti lettera 35, i used to have the olympia. 1- how could i replace the heads to my own handwritting personal font style? (soldering/jewelry?) or is there any factory doing personalized letter types? 2- is there any typewritter with smaller letters and spacing i.e the dictionary size words?
@someonespadre2 күн бұрын
Changing font either means swapping typebars from another machine of same brand/model or removing the slugs and soldering the slugs of desired font on there…this is expert level work. Typewriters have different pitches meaning larger/smaller letters and tighter spacing. Look for elite pitch for smaller text. A typical portable will go up to about 80 on the scale for pica (10 cpi-characters per inch) or about 100 for elite (12cpi). Some brands had even smaller pitch (up to 17cpi), particularly European brands seem to favor smaller type. Note that longer carriages will not adhere to the numbers given above.
@arcadepiano2 күн бұрын
@@someonespadre my point was that it makes sense that typewritters would type the normal size which is way smaller as seen on every book and newspaper. the size of my olympia and my olivetti are like 400% oversized compared to the size of my spanish dictionary. why is that? why we never seen such a product in the late 80's the golden era of typewritters? my father was one of the best soldering stainless steel. but is there any person that would 3D print my handwritting font? otherwise it will be another invention that won't be built for decades,

Is this issue inevitable for any SM7 that is heavily used?

It's not inevitable but it's more common than not in my experience.

Is that Knocker loose penetrant similar to WD-40? Just curious because I always heard that WD-40 was terrible for typewriters.
@HotRodTypewriter11 күн бұрын
Read up on the rebel typewriter project. He does a great write up on wd-40 and the demonization of it. But to answer your question, wd-40 has paraffin wax as an ingredient and this wax can dry up and get sticky over time. You can reactivate old WD goo with new WD applied so there are use cases here. As far as the ingredient list on knocker loose, you'd have to research that. I use it. You don't have to.
@valis1411 күн бұрын
@@HotRodTypewriter OK, I will look it up. The way it sounded in the vid is that you sprayed Knocker Loose on that escapement area during the diagnostic period and then, LATER on, during the cleanup phase you intended to use WD40 on the keys. I wasn't sure if you meant just the key tops or the whole keys, almost like a finishing spray. I saw a vid showing the disassembly of an Olivetti Lettera 22 and he used toothpaste on the keys to get them all shined up (interesting!) so I wanted to clarify that. You use Knocker Loose, Van Cleave uses Blaster, I've also seen some use Free All. Hard to know which one to use. I was using Simple Green, but now I'm pretty sure that's only just one part of a flush, the way you used the Orange Spray on the Voss machine rebuild.
@someonespadre2 күн бұрын
I used WD-40 on my last 2 projects so will find out if I regret that later. I flushed it out with other products and air. I used WD-40 on the stuck sliding step gears on my Monroe calculator 2 years ago, this was before I got into typewriters since the 1970s; no issues so far. The step gears slide on a shaft and when they get stuck it jams the keyboard. They are not supposed to be oiled so probably someone oiled them decades ago. The WD-40 freed them and the machine works. So I’m skeptical of all the anti WD-40 opinions. I always blow whatever I put in there out. There’s no use softening old oil then leaving it in there to harden again.
@someonespadre2 күн бұрын
My personal theory is WD-40 is the go to of rank amateurs who know nothing, their machine is stuck so they fill it with WD-40 and that frees it for awhile until it freezes again even worse. So technique is the problem but WD-40 gets blamed.

I will say, though, that a design with cork and particular rubber bits (SC escapement) that go hard over time and cause problems isn't necessarily a design flaw if the problem only shows up 20+ years later, especially after the world has stopped using typewriters. "Weakness" might be a better term. I have to imagine, if doable, replacement of these pads with synthetic cork might give a longer life thereafter.
@Airbugg17 күн бұрын
Also...Can't you just hit the spacebar 5 times to tab over? Or just use the carriage release to move around manually?

Good to know. Like I said in the video, I don't work on the newer styles as I mainly work in mid century models. Perhaps Olympia realized the flaw and pulled it for the 8. Thanks for the info!

As a side note- this flaw or issue can crop up on any machine that uses this style of interference drum tab brake, it is a system used on other makes and models

I am at my wits end with my one of these. I've fixed every problem it had but, for the life of me, I can't work out what could be obstructing the carriage about 14-16 spaces from the end. It isn't the bell. It isn't any of the feed rollers. It isn't the spring pressure. I am at a loss.

I have exactly this same problem. if i remove that plate, it works, but that is not the answer. there appears to be no adjustement to accomodate this, so i guess it must be the platen has shrunk, but it is like 5 mm in my case. how could it shrink that much????

Those rubber spacers that need to be replaced - do they *have * to be rubber? What if I used nylon spacers? I mean, they wouldn't compress, so I wouldn't over-torque the screw and squish the replacement spacer.

You mentioned that you had a video on removing the carriage on the SM machines, but I couldn't find it. I did find one you did on the SM9 though. Do they disassemble the same way?

Mega-thanks for this! It'll be great to get to the rollers of the machine I was given. Maybe I can get it moving again. 🤞 Fabulous! I absolutely adore the Remington Portable 1 & 2. I have a two-tone 3 in blue, but the typebars don't have that lever lift. Did they ever do colors on the 1 or 2? I love me a blue typewriter.
