Right off the bat I knew 1 was the answer but then I felt something wrong b^2 - 1 = 1 - b Substitute 1 in place of b 1^2 - 1 = 1 - 1 0 = 0 1 is the 1st solution Now for the 2nd solution you can do it two ways First method is quadratic equation (obtaining both solutions together) b^2 - 1 = 1 - b b^2 + b - 2 = 0 b^2 + 2b - b - 2 = 0 b(b + 2) - 1(b + 2) = 0 (b + 2)(b - 1) = 0 b = - 2 or b = 1 2nd way to find only the 2nd solution b^2 - 1 = 1 - b Apply the formula a^2 - b^2 on LHS (b + 1)(b - 1) = 1 - b 1 - b can be written as -(b - 1) (b + 1)(b - 1) = -(b - 1) Divide (b - 1) on both sides b + 1 = -1 b = -1-1 b = -2 b = 1 or -2
