Great interview. I'm glad they picked two beautiful, talented, and successful gymnasts with different body types- Jordyn's always had a thicker and stronger frame while Nastia's lighter and thinner- and show how both of them can do amazing things.

It’s sad how some of the comments on this video are celebrating one women while criticizing the other women. Both are such amazing role models and women for girls all around the world and they both brought up excellent points. We should be able to celebrate strong women without pitting them against each other! Thanks for such a great video! I loved how authentic the questions were.

I don't remember anyone ever saying Nastia was too skinny. If anything, it was celebrated because it was easier for her to swing bars and do an extremely difficult routine that kept up with the Chinese gymnasts, and she really excelled on beam. Sure she couldn't do the powerful backwards tumbling, but instead her routine was difficult front tumbling passes. They did call her fragile though, which she was because it took her a while to recover from injuries.

She might be on a wedding exercise regimen/diet right now , but she still went through a period where her body filled out and went a bit haywire. Eventually your body adjusts. Gymnasts are short, and when you gain a lot of weight but no height, you may look "big" even if you are just going through very normal body changes that come with puberty.

I absolutely love this interview! As a dance I have to wear a leotard for over twenty hours a week. Sometime it can be hard, not just for stronger girls but for thinner girls too. People always have an opinion about your body no matter your body type, and I think we need to stop judging people because of their bodies.

Isn't it quite similar in many ways for dancers as for gymnasts? I haven't done either. But to me in some regards the culture around it. The stupid amount of training, the weight picking, the demands on technique?

I love that skinny shaming, the equally painful reverse was pointed out. ✨ Really love hearing where amazing athletes have gone years later. And it’s so interesting to hear other people with similar experiences, but who’ve gone so far in their careers, because with gymnastics and dance you’ve peaked as a teen and your career is usually done by 21, 22, often younger. So growing up so quickly in some ways but then having to grow up in so many others after you retire is a really interesting perspective.

So actually, no, the suggested probability that Nastia was safe from Nassar bc of her father isn’t supported by any evidence that I know of, and in fact I’m highly inclined to believe that she, too, was a victim. If you listen to the 9 part multiple-award-winning podcast “Believed,” reported and narrated by two young Michigan Public Radio journalists, a stunning and masterful piece of reporting which is a collaborative effort of MPR and NPR, there is much attention paid to the fact that many, if not most parents WERE in the room at least on some occasions -and many on multiple occasions- _AS_ Nassar “treated” these girls and young women, that is, while he molested/assaulted them, and the unimaginable horror they (the parents) felt as they learned -often years later- and processed that he did his thing WHILE they were in the room. I won’t explain, it’s easy enough to look up, as there are many sources for this info besides the podcast. But the podcast really is the best way to hear the full story of these girls’ experience, and how MSU and the gymnastic and Olympic committees involved allowed Nassar to continue his crimes for over 20 years after he was first reported. Also, parents should always be allowed to be present when a minor child is being seen by a doctor for anything, for exactly this reason -to act as a chaperone; but this was quite a unique case in that he was able to hide what he was doing from the parents as they sat there, and even made small talk with them. It is also unlikely that Nastia’s father was able to protect her since we know he molested his close friend’s daughter from the age of 6-12. You can find the podcast wherever you listen to your podcasts, I highly recommend it.

Maybe they were safe because so many of the girls were coached by their parents ( Nastia and Chellsie from their dads and Jana Bieger had her mother around). In such a toxic and pressured environment girls might not tell their coaches but they would definitely tell their coaching parents and Nassar might have assumed that.

Knowing that many super competitive gymnasts hit puberty later on in due to their training demands, it's very possible they may not have pubic hair until later on. Otherwise, I would think they would do the usual hair removal techniques, just like anyone else who does it.

Waxing is the norm, and if you can't manage that removal creams, I was an elite gymnast, I got boobs early and started my periods at a normal age then stopped as training intensified but even now I still have very little body hair it just didn't really grow in all that much, hope that helped a bit with the question, other than the boobs it's the norm for my other gym friends too

I think there is plenty of stereotyping of the 'b*tchy girl', but I also think there are plenty of times I've watched sports - with boys as well - where I feel I could easily tell which ones had a bad attitude vs those that were focused. There's a difference in being solemn, focused, in the zone vs seeing some athletes make rude faces, kind of stomp off, or even throw things.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but why don't they have the sport wait til they are fully grown and then compete? You know - WOMEN's gymnastics. We have had many women compete successfully fully grown - women in their 20s. Isnt Simone Biles in her 20s and fully grown? I've been watching loads of old gymnastics videos online of world champs and Olympics - and going back to the 1990s all the gymnasts look emaciated, pale, thin and unwell. NOWDAYS, and i think its due to raising the age limit to 16 for Olympics - gymnasts are older, their bodies stronger. Look at Simone Biles, prime example. There are still gymnasts that look a bit too thin, but less so than before. I think if they raised the age again, to 18, it woudl only be better for gymnasts in terms of healthier bodies. Stronger healthier bodies = more amazing gymnastics (simone!)

Wow. Then explain why eating disorders plague far more women than men. Women are judged far more critically. Take a look at Hollywood. Men keep working after 45, women dry up. You need to open your eyes Violet.
@Tintenfischchen
@Tintenfischchen 7 жыл бұрын
We don't know (yet) why eating disorders occur more in women. There are genetic components (studies with identical twins prove that) as well as environmental influences. Eating disorders are far more complicated than "I wanna look like a model, so I stop eating". There's most probably also a big number of men with eating disorders who never get diagnosed and therefor don't appear in those statistics. As Tosh said, men tend to keep things like that to themselves. A man suffering from anorexia or bulimia is far more likely to be seen as weak or even laughed at when they do talk about it. And what is 'women dry up' supposed to mean? Most people don't work in Hollywood, so what happens there is not representative of the whole population. I know a lot of women older than 45 and they go to work, just like the men do. Sure, some are housewives and caregivers for their children, which is totally fine too. Oh, and my eyes are wide open, thanks.

What is this nonsense about viewing gymnasts different when they are focused? I know literally no one that does that. Literally - no one has ever said anything negative about a gymnast looking focused and intense. How could they not look that way in something like gymnastics where it's so difficult. This just seems to one of those things that is either made up or blown up because a couple internet trolls said it.

NASTIA: " It's just as hurtful if someone tells you that you're overweight and just as hurtful if someone tells you that you're underweight." Reality check: No it isn't. I'm not saying it wasn't hurtful to you, I'm sure it was, but there are WAY more negative connotations associated with being overweight than there are with being underweight. You need to check your thin privilege. Also maybe you should have given Jordyn a chance to speak on this instead of bulldozing her.

Elizabeth Hirsch-Tauber To her, telling that she was underweight and that she was not going to be able to chase her dreams... I think its a different situatiom than the one in "normal" life... Telling someone they are overweight is bad, of course, but telling a gymnast that she is underweight and wont be able to succed, its litteraly telling you: you will totally fail in your ideal life, its impossible...

That's really not true, it's exactly the same, when people tell you that you are overweight/underweight it hurts the same. If you already know that you are and people keep telling you that, it's really bad

It is just as a hurtful as you haven't been in the their shoes. It's not a privledge (although society has been beating this into our heads for years), it's science. Some bodies are just naturally thin, while other bodies are naturally bigger. Trust me, it's sometimes very tiring to have comments made about my body when I don't ask for it, especially from random people that I don't know. Random people don't know the whole picture on why a person is thin. A thin person can be someone who is taking chemo for cancer, or recovering from some other major surgery that resulted in a lot of loss of weight and muscle tone for all we know. So, unless you're a medical professional, it's best to keep one's comments about someone else's weight to yourself. If you are a medical professional, then don't be a jerk, and treat your patient with dignity and respect.

Thin privileged? What in the world? I think you have resentment in your heart towards those who are thin. Being thin isn't always healthy or good either. My husband is very thin and his family always made snide comments towards him and also towards me which bothered him deeply. Sometimes they would ask me if I was even feeding my husband and other things like that which were cruel and unnecessary. It absolutely is hurtful when you are eating constantly and yet can't gain weight at all.

Ugh. I quit watching after the "men vs. women in their zone" conversation. Women's gymnastics is cuter - they talked about hair and make up and presenting yourself. Their leotards are way more flashy than the general blah outfits of the men. They dance during the floor routine. Men don't. They are elegant on the floor and beam. Men aren't required to be. So yes, given all of that, the contradiction of being focused while being cute and flashy IS more noticeable. It's not bad or wrong. it's just different.
