not too bad for your first one. The only piece of advice I would give that I see a lot of white belts do is either just gripping without a purpose or not fighting the opponent's grips. A lot of BJJ is about initiating your grips whilst shutting down their's

@@MrCrazykicker The biggest thing I saw, is that he was way too happy being in his opponents closed guard. It might feel okay in a MMA/"street fight" perspective, but you don't want to be there in a gi BJJ match. I also like to think of it as first getting out of his opponents closed guard, then passing the guard. I don't really see it as passing the guard directly from close guard, though I guess it's a matter of definitions.

That was the best video of yours I've ever watched. Number 1,it shows what a warrior you are, but at the same time it showed your human side, nervousness,a little worry, then still being recognized as a celebrity while trying to get your mind right. I'm happy for you and your family. You cried off the pressure of past and present and let us witness it. That was great. I'm a 67 yr old athlete from Detroit Mi USA. I work out 4 to 5 times a week. I like to train,so I never have to talk myself into it. But if there is ever a day when I'm not feeling it,I will just remember this video. That will get me going. It's great to be a champion. I've been on championship teams, but never as an individual. But you are a true champion is more ways than one. CONGRATS!!

Tony, I've just turned 38. I used to be quite a basketball player before my knees and back gave up. Since then I have dabbled in boxing and BJJ but I have never been able to shake that has-been depression and weight. I'm gonna get out of it starting today. Thank you for your openness and honesty, I'm tired of feeling like life is over and tired of being a has-been, I want to be the best me, for me and my family. Thank you again for this.

As a brown belt who watches your vids to learn striking, it's really great seeing you pick up and compete in BJJ. I'm especially excited to learn how your career as a pro boxer contributes to your perspective as a grappler. I've met many grapplers who started off as strikers. Even though the two disciplines seem completely different, it's really cool watching you figure out how to bring movements and concepts over from one sport to the other (like how you used feinting and footwork in your matches). Can't wait to see more grappling content from you!

Mate, that was such a great watch. All those emotions you spoke about, all those thoughts, the mental and physical struggle is so relatable. I am close to 2 years training BJJ and competed Mid 2024 for the first time and I only did it because my Daughter competes all the time and thought why not since I'm there too. I came from a Kickboxing background so I was very new to the ground game. It was great to watch your video and know I am not alone with the pressure and struggles one feels leading up and even after a Competition. I ended up winning Gold but I reckon I would of felt the same way as I did with my wins if I had placed dead last. The feeling of just fighting those inner demons and stepping on the mats is the real reward. If you ever travel to Albury/Wodonga (on the Border of N.S.W & Victoria) and are looking for a great gym to have a few rolls and meet some great people, you are always welcome at our Gym, Border Grappling Club. As Tony will know what happens. My boxing coach tried to spar with me when he was 57. I was 20/21 and smaller than him. A right hand soon had him on the floor, when he tried to turn it into a scrap. Skills often don't mean much in late 50's and the belt is more symbolic. The higher the belt. The more money they've got out of you?

Best advice I can give is when you have closed guard. Learn to sweep. Hip bump, pendulum and scissor when you have guard. Then learn a technical standup from closed guard bottom. Learn submissions that you can chain together. Ie. Hip bump to a guillotine to 100 percent sweep. As a blue belt. Chaining submissions are imprtant. Hope this helps. You did really good.

Hey! Amazing story mate! I stopped skateboarding in my late twenties and really let myself go, but I took up jitz like you did, got the bug and started competing also. Managed to take gold in no -gi in my div that day at the same comp (I just noticed my bags were behind you when you were crying :P). So happy for you to find yourself in BJJ, I went through a massive change after taking it up. It's amazing with your boxing background describing the pressure of competition, but afterwards you're so overwhelmed with joy and releif. Even when you lose, it's a blessing because it will drive you to improve your game plan. One thing for certain is if you'd like to get better at BJJ, just compete and you will sharpen yourself so quickly. And with every win, your confidence builds, and with every loss, the hunger comes back and little details become more improtant then ever. Enjoy the process mate! Congratulations on your performance!!

Great video. I just ordered "way of the warrior kid" we practice taekwondo, but i believe this book will be a great thing to read with my 11 year old. I want to have him get into jujitsu eventually, but only if he wants to. I've never trained in it myself, but hold a black belt in taekwondo, so we decided to have him try that first, and he loves it. He is a green belt now (6th gup). I love listening to Jocko Willinks already, and didn't realize he had a kids book. We've been working on my sons self confidence, and his sportsmanship in general, wo the timing of mentioning it was perfect.
