😭😭😭 don't worry about me... I'll just be here crying for the rest of the day. Ugh that episode was BEAUTIFUL!!!! I felt every single emotion possible, but those last two scenes..... GOLD. PURE GOLD!
Haikyuu is the single greatest thing to ever happen to volleyball and if you don't love this episode you have no soul (just kidding.... but seriously ha). I know you all know exactly what is going to happen, but just in case, I don't want to give any spoilers, other than Kageyama being loved by his teammates is what I live for. You probably could have told that from the title anyways. Oh! And the unreal serve dodge by Noya near the end of the match 👍😮 The match with Seijoh comes to an end.... let's see what happens!
✧ ✧ ✧ ✧ ✧
Sarah Pavan is a Canadian beach volleyball Olympian and World Champion. She is the 3-time FIVB World Tour Best Blocker, and one half of 2019’s Most Outstanding Team. Before playing beach volleyball, Sarah Pavan was one of the world’s top indoor volleyball players. She had an impressive professional career in Italy, Brazil, South Korea, and China, and represented the Canadian Indoor National Team.
On this channel, Sarah shares everything you want to know about volleyball, from beginner skills all the way to the more advanced levels. You can find volleyball drills, how-to skill technique, sport-specific strength and conditioning exercises, strategy, and more. I don't comment on videos very often but I just wanted to say that I watch quite a lot of people react to Haikyuu and I think yours might be my favourite that I've ever seen. It feels like more than anyone else, you seem to 'get' the show, appreciate the character arcs AS WELL as the volleyball. Where other reactors (even good ones) get too caught up on certain things, find it difficult to follow, or maybe get to distracted trying to give their opinions or teach the audience - I feel like you take the show in as it's intended, you don't break up the pace of the scenes, you get emotional. It's really amazing to watch. It's a shame that you can't do videos weekly because the wait is the only downside, but that is 100% understandable and not your fault. Thank you for the videos! Looking forward to more!

The meal scene is impressive. Like the members of Haikyuu, we say hello in Japan when we eat. The English subtitles were "Thank you for the food". In Japanese it is "itadakimasu".This is a very deep word. The meaning is close to "I will receive it". Receive the lives of meat, fish, plants and vegetables used in the diet. Receive from farmers and ranchers who grow vegetables and meat. Receive from the person who cooked the food. And everyone also receives the compassionate feelings of Director Ukai who acted. In other words, it is a set of gratitude for everything. I like this Japanese word "itadakimasu".

In a recent interview with the creator of Haikyuu, Furudate talks about doing research upon initially writing the story and shaping the dynamics of the teams. Furudate noticed that in Japanese middle school & high school teams powerful servers and serve specialists take a lot of spotlight or their team revolves/relies a lot around/on them. They also happen to be setters often, which further associates with Haikyuu players who are setters-serve specialists appearing a lot. According to that interview section, that was why Haikyuu showcases serving so much through Oikawa & other serve specialists later on. Younger teams & players have not had the time and experience to develop into extremely high level play, so they apparently focus a lot on honing their serving skills in Japanese school teams (or at least used to a decade ago), since receiving them is not going to be as well trained as in college level and further. Hope this helps you understand why this happens so much (& it will continue happening in Season 3 & 4).

6:25 it is accurate! hahaha the mangaka (original comic author) really lined everything up according to the match settings to the point they were complaining that there were so many things they couldnt do because the pace of the match had its own direction. The only reason we only see Oikawa serve is because he's the only one with a big serve on their side right now and he's the main uuuuh antagonist of this arc(?) In the same way we only ever see Hinata serve when he fails, a lot of unseen serves are just 'normal' standing serves with the aim of just getting it over the net

Fun fact: the author of Haikyuu, Furudate Haruichi, was really impressed with the high school setter from Toua academy, where they went on the very first research. He was a really great server, and so Furudate kind of ended up making many opposing setters great servers too - they kinda regretted that, as it's too easy to put Karasuno in a pinch xD

I've seen multiple reactions to this episode where people kinda "predicted" they'd lose, because it would work in a story arc sense, and so don't get immersed in the emotions of this episode. I was waiting for your reaction in particular to this episode because I had a feeling that as a pro athlete you'd understand how the Karasuno boys felt on a deeper level. That beyond the outcome of the match itself, or how it works for the story, the core sentiments would resonate with you. It has to be a visceral despair... to totally exhaust your body and mind for victory, and then be forced to watch it slip away from you. I think dedicated athletes would get this episode's nuances a bit more than the average viewer.

It's a weird reaction to just predict that they'll lose and be done with it imho I have never been in professional sports, yet the emotions I feel every time I watch this episode are indescribable. I have never felt so strongly for anything in my life, and I envy them for being able to care about something so much that they can feel such despare. Even knowing for a fact that they are going to lose this match, I feel anxious with them, I cheer them on, and I cry for them. I don't know how you can be with them on this journey and just not care. It's beyond me. Maybe these other reactors weren't immersed in the story in the first place then, 'cause I don't think you can simply turn off your emotions like that just because you figured they're gonna hurt you. Also, when I was watching this the first time around, I personally really didn't expect them to lose simply because it's a seinen and you're not really supposed to lose in a seinen lmao *MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE MANGA FOR NO REASON IN PARTICULAR, DO NOT READ THIS ISTG* and then when it happened again i f/cking screamed, i still can't believe Furudate-sama did this to me smh

The scene at the end is of course beautiful. The emotional catharsis of just letting it all out was so needed. But I think because that scene is so perfect, Takeda Sensei's words to Hinata and Kageyama get overlooked. I cant remember the quote verbatim but he basically tells them that losing doesnt make them weak and that the only thing that would make them weak would be if they gave up and didnt try again because of that one loss. Takeda is such a gem.

gosh. this episode NEVER fails to overwhelm me with emotions, no matter how many times i’ve seen it. the scene of kageyama throwing away his crown and robe (your attention to the fact that oikawa acknowledges that “a kageyama who trusts his team is really scary”, YES!) and showing how he’s found a team that trusts him and that HE can trust in return, to the devastating final block, to the speech that takeda gives to the boys, all the way to the meal scene after the credits… it’s just all such an emotional ride all the way through. i am so grateful to see your reactions as always, and seeing you get more and more attached and invested in these characters and their stories and all the emotions just makes the whole experience that much more amazing and heartwarming. i cannot wait to see you close out season 1 and continue watching forward- many people have commented it before, but as undeniably incredible as season 1 is, the future seasons are just SEVERAL levels more intense and emotional, and i cannot wait to see you meet all the new characters and see all the new lessons, dynamics, backstories, and emotions :’)) i’m definitely rambling now, but thank you sarah!! ❤️

another point, but i absolutely adore how this series doesn’t shy away from loss. from a sports anime/general “the protagonist ALWAYS wins” trope perspective, that stuff amazing for hype and energy, but what haikyuu does so expertly is make the story so realistic. no one is certain to win every match ever, or execute a flawless play every set- it’s just not possible. so going into this match, you absolutely WANT karasuno to win because you’ve seen how hard they’ve worked, but you know that despite all that work, you may still face a loss. and that goes for the opposing team as well (furthering the point that there are no true “antagonists” in this show, because you all know they’re all motivated and playing for the same reasons). jeez, how beautiful HA :’)

When I first watched it years ago, I cried because I understood these feelings as a former player, but in the last year as I've watched and re-watched this series and read the manga, the final two scenes took on a deeper role in my life as someone who was in/is still coming out of a difficult place. It's so hard to get up sometimes, but it's so vital to our growth and our strength. Something I love about Haikyuu! from a literary lens is how food is utilized repeatedly as a metaphor. Plus, everything that comes after in the story is worth this moment of sadness for the viewer. Oikawa's train of thought at the end of this game is also what made me properly like him. When you lost in the Olympics, I immediately remembered this episode and felt sad. What the audience of Haikyuu thought was exactly what I thought.

I was a little scared to watch this because it always hurts me so much watching the end of this match, and I just knew I'd cry even more because you'd be crying with us. It was so great and I love how much you cherish all these kids, and your reaction to the loss was just as personal as it was to us...even more because you've faced a similar feeling on an arena the boys could only dream of. Now I just want to hug you and cry together 😭

Enjoyed the watch as usual. Adding my support with a comment as usual. & leaving my personal opinions about some of the iffy translations as usual. 16:19 「ホント、厄介!」➔ "Talk about annoying!" I guess this is more natural(?), but wish they could've stuck with translating 厄介 to "troublesome" (I mean, they even translated it to "troublesome" later at 22:19, so why not keep things constant?), since "annoying" adds an unnecessary layer of negativity to the line. 21:32 「一人だけ強い訳じゃなかったじゃん、烏野は」➔ "But Karasuno had more than 1 strong player, didn't they?" This had better flow, maybe, but would've preferred it to be more like "But it wasn't the case where Karasuno was a team with only 1 strong player, though." 21:51 「もし飛雄が昔の独裁者のままだったとしても、ラストチビちゃんに上げたかも知れない。その場合は可能性があると言うだけで絶対に上げるとまでは思えなかった。俺の攻撃を読んでみせた事は、今度は俺に攻撃を読まれる事になっちゃった訳だ」➔ " Even if Tobio had stayed a dictator, he might have still tossed to the shrimp in the end. I only thought it was a possibility, & there was no guarantee he was going to do it. He was reading my attacks, but this time he ended up having his attack being read by me" (It was sometimes hard to tell apart the period marks from commas from the way the screen is rounded, but even taking that into consideration) I found this translation a bit "off". Perhaps something like "Even if Tobio remained to be the dictator he was before, he could've still tossed to the little-one at that last part. But in THAT case, it would've only meant that there was a possibility of that, & I couldn't have felt for certain that he'd definitely do so. So, him having been successful in reading my attack (where trust in teammates was involved in Kageyama's thought process) ended up having his attack read by me in turn."

This episode stunned me on my first watch. I never once let go of the belief they would prevail until this moment. I felt just as low as the team does. The meal ending chokes me up, every time. What impressed me was how fast and carefully the show built ME back up, along with Karasuno. I became so excited to see the new direction in season two and onward. Every time I thought they would win in the seasons that followed, this episode replayed in the back of my mind and put me on a knife’s edge when any opponent presented a challenge. Thanks for the videos Sarah!

I was a little worried how you would feel coming into this episode after the Olympics and recent tournament. I think many of us felt a bit anxious about this because we all know what happened in this episode. I am so glad that you found comfort and inspiration after the tears (many of us were in tears too watching this the first time). This anime is really a masterpiece on getting us emotional, especially for those of us who love this sport and have played it competitively in the past (and present).

Your reaction to Oikawa serving all the time is just hilarious. 🤣 It's not that he always serves or only one that serves, it's because he has more screen time when he serves. I have to speak for Oikawa on this. (I have read the entire Haikyuu manga and I like him in overall. He is not my number Haikyuu character but definitely in my Top 10.)

I've seen that last scene about 10 times now. I've seen it on its own, I've seen it by myself, and I've seen it while watching other people watch it. Every single time, I cry like crazy. That scene is the scene I've cried the most, all kind of media included. Movies, video games, music, art, theater, name it. Nothing beats that scene to me.

Everytime I come back to this episode, that block just...it feels like I'm being broken right along with the team...also for the fan base, when this originally aired...we had to wait like what seems like 8 years(I'm definitely exaggerating that a little) for season 2 to get animated. When it came to Haikyuu I had to sit around with that feeling for a while...and then years later I found out about the post credits scene, and the fact that this wasn't the last episode of season 1

All I can say is that you're in good company because i've seen this show like 4+ times and them losing to Aoba Josai here still brings tears to my eyes, even though I know it's coming. And yes! Them losing here also ties back to their first inter-high match and how, in a match, someone always has to lose and when you eventually do, the only way is to pick yourself back up and try again.

I saw the reaction of the last episode of season 4 and had to come back.. i don't think many people notice but this is the perfect parallel, the words Kageyama said here are the same exact to what atsumu says... And the fact that them going from blocked to the blockers is just.... It's too good
