In the 1980s, I ran in a 4x100m relay with Steve Ovett. He was opening a new stadium and he guested on the last leg of a challenge race. I handed over the baton to him and he didn't realise that I was a former sprinter and he sat off a bit late and I almost ran into the back of him. But he was a really nice guy, as was Steve Cram when I met him. Coe was a really cold fish by comparison. But all 3 were phenomenal athletes.

@@bfc3057 Yes, it was something of a minor miracle that he came home with silver in the 800m and managed to defend his 1500m title. No human in mid-distance history would have beaten Coe this day. Race management was perfect and that final 100 m is, I think, as fast as any ever run at this distance. Utterly magnificent! Still energetic enough at the end of this Olympic record race, Seb gives the proverbial middle finger to an incredulous British press corps.

Kivin Kilduff: Kind of Disagree. Herb Elliot, Peter Snell could have challenged Coe, if they had done modern training. Ovett too, he did beat Coe in the 800m in 1980.

@@mathematics5573 Well, of course we'll never know, F; however, given that he was finally healthy after spending months battling a mono-type virus, I am convinced that he was truly unbeatable this day. Cram was in shock after the race and could not believe Seb's closing speed over the final 200, especially the final 100, which was utterly stunning. Kindly note that Seb was barely out of breath after a race that was a mere 1.5 seconds off the world record, and that without the obligatory "rabbit."

Let's not forget in the 800m he was the first under 1:43 & 1:42 and the first under 3:49 & 3:48 in the mile. It's to bad him and Steve Ovett didn't race more often head to head.

Around 2000 there was a female American athlete competing in 5 events. So much hype was around her, about how she was going to win all 5, so much pressure was put on her. She must have felt it. I recall they were predicting her win with certainty, and while this was going on, someone else won the long jump, ending her "drive for five". I recall they were literally speaking about it like it was a given, and in the background another athlete was jumping farther than her as we watched.

@@simonedwards5564 I agree with practically all of this. I still think the most impressive 1500m I ever saw in that decade was Coe's solo 3:31.9 with ridiculous pacing and no lap times in Stockholm 81. I can't see even a peak Ovett or Cram managing that scenario and running a faster time. Coe should have run 3:28.0 that night, even without competition, if he'd had laps of 55.5, 1:51.5, 2:47.5, which would have beaten the then WR by 3.3secs! I think Cram's 3:46.3 mile in 85 is the closest. His last 440 of 53.1 shows he had a lot left, possibly a sub 3:45, although he had competition pushing him close up to the last 200m. His first 2 quarters were pretty even - 57.2, 57.3, if perhaps a second (each) slower than ideal for a 3:45.0. The 3rd lap dropped to 58.6, and it was this drop in pace, on the back of 2 even laps, that gave him the reserves to run 'all out' from the bell. I could see him running - 56.5, 1:53.0, 2:50.0, 3:44 high that night with ideal pacing. I never saw that 45.5 relay leg in the 79 European Cup and would love to view it, although I fear that we probably wouldn't see much of him on the footage as he was towards the back of the field at the changeover and I think finished 6th at the end. Usually the cameras are on the front teams! We can but hope though. Have a great weekend.

By this time to be fair Cram had squeezed past Coe and Ovette as the top 1500m runner. @deano276715 жыл бұрын
Cram was definitely the best 1500m runner in the world based on what happened in 83, yes, but I don't think he'd yet matched the overall achievements of Ovett or Coe, or shown to be a better mile at this stage. By LA, Cram had still yet to break any world records, Coe was still faster over 800, 1000 and 1 mile than Cram (and only 0.3 difference over 1500m), and Ovett still held the 1500m WR and was faster in the mile. All 3 had injury problems and interruptions in training in the 6 months leading up to this race, it wasn't just Cram. Certainly what Cram did over the future 2 years put him up their alongside Ovett and Coe in terms of achievements, and he was ranked #1 in 85 and 86 over 1500m (despite not running the fastest time in either season), but imo he had hitherto not displayed the form to beat Coe on that day in LA. If Cram had been in LA in the form he showed in Oslo 85, then yes, it would have been much closer, but even then it is very difficult to compare form shown in a one off paced circuit race and that of a championship final after rounds (2 for Cram, 6 for Coe!). Cram should have won in 88, but was reckless in attempting that 1000m WR in Rieti and then attempting to do the double in Seoul.

@@deano27671 It's strange to think that Cram won his top championship gold medal in 1983 before he peaked as an athlete. Imagine how many golds he, Coe and Ovett would have if there had been a IAAF WC every 2 years. Cram would have won in 85 I would think as Coe was not in top form. I thought Cram had a better PB for 1500 than Coe by 84.
@deano276715 жыл бұрын
Stuart yes, I wrote that by LA, Coe had faster pbs than Cram over 800,1000 & 1 mile. Only in 1500m had Cram run 0.3 secs faster than Coe. Cram’s pb was 3:31.66 iir, from 83, while Coe’s was 3:31.95 from Stockholm 81. We all know that his Stockholm race was worth much faster but for the awful pacing, and Coe’s mile WR was equivalent to around 3:30.5 anyway.

@@stoolpigeon4285 The pure middle distance events are 800-1mile. Coe was faster than Cram over 800, 1000m, while over 1500m Cram was 0.10 faster; a time set in a close race as opposed to a poorly paced run by Coe. Cram was faster over 1 mile by a second, but Coe broke the mile WR 3 times (compared to Cram's 1) and was unbeaten over the distance from 1976 to 1983. Coe's achievements over all four distances was greater.

@@-ShootTheGlass- I'm not convinced but I maybe wrong. In the 800 metres semi-final when he flung himself over the line to qualify for the final he virtually equaled his PB for the distance. He then trails in last in 1.52 in the final a time which would suggest there was something seriously wrong with him. Yet he recovers to get through two qualifying heats of the 1500 metres. Looking at the footage of the final here he eased past Scott going into the last lap and along with Coe, Cram and Abascal was clear of the rest with 300 metres left. I have to be honest I have a suspicion that he just did want Coe in particular and Cram to beat him. As well as virtually equaling his 1.44 pb in the 800 metres semi, he had run 1.46 and 1.45 in the first round and quarter finals. He finished second in the quarter final looking quite comfortable and his smile and bow to the crowd just after the heat is hardly indicative of a runner with breathing problems. The only races he had problems it seems were in the two finals which strikes me as odd. It's history now and there no doubt he was a great runner. Here is footage of him in the 800 metres quarter final and his reaction after. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oITEkIB4pdqHnrs

I was maybe too young to remember how the media reacted to Coe being selected over Peter Elliott in 84. Was this why Coe was so angry towards them? I do remember that in 88 they were 100% supporting Coe over Elliott, and even depicted the latter as a donkey (the 'working class' paper the Mirror). Were they trying to make amends or something?
@anthonyquinn6009 Жыл бұрын
The selectors were in a no-win situation in 1988. Had Coe showed even a glimpse of his best form in 1988 I think he would have been selected. He did not however even qualify for the fInal of the 1500 metres Olympic Trials.
@philipmarsden710410 ай бұрын
I'm not too young to remember. He wasn't popular with the press, who thought him a posh southerner at the time when Conservative politics was especially divisive in the north of England and bitterness was on show. Peter Elliott was a good athlete from the northern county of Yorkshire who had recently beaten Coe but was controversially not selected in Coe's place. The decision was the right one however because Coe won the gold medal at 1500m with Elliott only selected for the 800m, but it was hard for anyone not called Coe, Cram or Ovett because they were so much better than the rest, barring occasional blips in form or fitness. The press, or rather some of it, always felt justified about the selection furore in 1984 because in 1992 Coe became a Conservative politician!
