This program was the first of his I'd ever watched. I didn't know why, but there was something uplifting about it. I remember a comment about how bad his short program was, I'd rolled my eyes and thought 'oh, these stuffy commentators. He probably landed on the wrong foot or something on one of his jumps or something,' (don't worry, I can tell you're laughing at me by now.) Then I went and watched his SP... yikes. But ever since I've been a huge fan of his.

I love watching these older performances from Nathan, and one of the reasons why is because it reminds me just how far the Quad King has come and how much he has grown in these past few years. His skating still had a rawness to it here. He's so smooth and fluid now, and has complete command of the ice. Going from being traumatized at the Olympics during his SP to winning his FS, to now being a tough, three-time World Champ...not to mention that he has been undefeated and so dominant since the Olympics. Just, wow. No doubt, Nathan Chen is a skilled and talented individual, but what really impresses me is how resilient and disciplined he is. That resilience and discipline is why he's such an amazing athlete, why he was able to bounce back and grow so much. It's clear he can handle pressure and difficult situations better than most. What happened to him during the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang would have left a permanent scar on most athletes. As Nathan always mentions, training your body and honing your skills are important but at least 50% of being successful is dependent on your mental state. He's so humble, wise, and inspirational.

@@ameliahoward9861...2018 was his very first Olympics. He was a contender for the gold medal and had a ton of pressure from the media. He was young and the pressure overwhelmed him so he performed terribly on his short program, pretty much missed every jump, and ended up in 17th place. He was able to come back and skate this amazing free program the next day, scoring the highest out of anyone and jumping six quads which had never been done before, but because he already messed up his short program so badly, he did not medal.

Now we've got Ilja Malinin and I am sure Trusova would have tried six quads if the rules for women were different. Nonetheless somethings missing: Cause this isn't called jump skating, but figure skating. Means the art is a factor as important as triples and quads.

Ahh, glorious non-commentary version of this free skate- the other one (w/ NBC commentary, though) got blocked, so I'm glad there's another version back here. FYI and what the description/video doesn't tell you: -For those wondering what Nathan's tech layout is here, it's 4Lz, 4F2T, 4F (hand), 4T3T, 4T, 4S, 3A, 3F1Eu3S. That's 6 attempted (although 5 were clean) quads in this free skate...which is now almost impossible to replicate by anyone else other than Nathan b/c rules concerning quads have changed and free programs for men are now 30 seconds shorter and one jumping pass less. -What's the point of this being called the highest scoring program of the event if they don't even show you what Nathan got? He got 215.08 for this program (127.64 for technical, 87.44 for presentation), about

Nathan hasn't lost any competitions since that FS ! Unreal ! Undefeated 3 seasons in a row ! Who accomplished such a feat ? Neither Plushenko nor Yagudin and Boitano ...
@L1623VP
@L1623VP 3 жыл бұрын
Yagudin and Plushenko each had two non-consecutive undefeated seasons. Hanyu after 11 seasons has none. People focus only on Hanyu's Olympic golds and forget how hit-and-miss his career has been. He's not had a very consistent career. In fact, he did not win both his Grand Prix assignment competitions until the 9th year of his career, one year AFTER his gold in Peyongchang. In fact, on the way to the Sochi Olympics he lost both his Grand Prix assignment competitions. The next season after winning gold in Sochi, he lost both his Grand Prix assignment competitions again AND lost his world title. People don't realize that while Hanyu has had a good career, there are skaters like Plushenko, Yagudin, and Nathan who have had FAR better and more winning careers overall. Why? Because they're FAR better skaters. For example, Nathan has been skating for five seasons. In that time he's won 16 of 21 international competitions or 76%. That means he's won 3 out every four competitions. By the same time in Hanyu's career at the end of his fifth season, he'd only won 6 of 22 international competitions (including his Sochi gold) for an average of 27% or barely 1 in every four competitions. Hanyu has not had a stellar career and in many ways is over-rated. It has taken Hanyu 11 years to win 17 gold medals. Nathan has won nearly as many (14) in just 5 years, and we must remember he likely would have won gold at both the 2020 Worlds and 2020 GPF that were cancelled, giving him 16 golds. Hanyu with 17 golds over 11 years has almost as many second place finishes at 15. Both Yagudin and Plushenko won more golds than Hanyu in less time, too. Plushenko won 30 gold medals over nine seasons with two undefeated. Yagudin won 22 gold medals over 6 seasons with two undefeated. (Plushenko's gold count is higher because between 1999 and 2002 he competed in a third GPF competition, the German Bofrost Cup, that no longer exists) Plushenko, Yagudin, and Nathan all crush Hanyu with far more winning and consistent careers.

I didn't mention Hanyu, because he didn't have any single season where he would win all the competitions. He was close, it was "almost", but the "almost" makes a big difference. In the 2018/19 season, he lost only once... to Nathan in Saitama.

@@olegrostov9722 My post wasn't meant to be critical but to just add information about Hanyu because people focus only on his two Olympic golds and nothing else about his career. However, when you look at the entire scope of his career outside those two golds, it's good but there are skaters who have much more impressive careers. Just one of the more interesting points about Hanyu is that he's never had an undefeated season. In many ways, Hanyu is over-rated even in spite of his two Olympic golds.

Hanyu didn't have a consistent season over his career because that man has suffered the more injuries than anybody else..still came back giving world records and making histories and is still tryingto push the boundaries. Therefore I can't agree with you about him being over rated....The defence of an Olympic title is very difficult in figure skating especially with youth skaters like nathan and shoma uno are coming up and to compete with them with an injury ahead is really great. He is the only complete skater which the sport has to offer and is now one of the greatest in figure skating. No matter the result we should not compare him with anyone other be it nathan or someone else. Nathan is to win these Olympics now....so we must be proud to witness a legend competing with the one in the making

Even you compared them. You put one higher and the other lower. This is just the comparison.

They're both amazing. They each have different styles. Nathan is cool, relaxed and technically superior. Yuzuru is passionate, fluid, and artistically superior. They are both G O.A.T.S. and we are lucky to be alive in this era to witness this level of greatness. Think about the other elite athletes: Virtue & Moir, Pappadakis & Cizeron, White & Davis, Biles, Bolt, Fraser-Pryce, Felix, Ryan Crouser, Williams, Osaka, Gauff, Phelps, Ledecky, Manuel, ....and many many more in other sports. This is an incredible era we're in getting to see incredible humans doing extraordinary feats and setting records 👏👏👏👏👏👏

It was after this season when Nathan pulled out six quads at both the Olympics LP and 2018 Worlds LP that the ISU freaked out. They knew Nathan was unbeatable and so started to make changes to the rules and scoring system to try and hold him back so other weaker skaters could remain competitive...which was wrong. The first change was to limit the number of quads that could be repeated in a LP from 2 to 1. Then, they started reducing the base value of the quads. Since the 2018 Olympics, the quad lutz (which only Nathan does) has been reduced by 2.1 base points, and the quad flip (that only Nathan does consistently) has been reduced by 1.3 base points. Right now, there is only a 1 point different between Nathan's hardest quad, the quad lutz, and Hanyu's hardest quad, the quad loop. Now, the ISU is planning on further reducing the base value of the quad lutz and quad flip and making them both equal in base value to the quad loop, all at 11 base points. Are you seeing what's happening? The ISU is making both of Nathan's hardest jumps the SAME base value as Hanyu's hardest (and easier) jump in order to help Hanyu remain competitive because he's fallen so far behind having been beaten by Nathan by 22, 44, and 32 points in their last three competitions. This is wrong. Everyone knows the various jumps have different degrees of difficulty because of their takeoff. Therefore, the harder jumps SHOULD earn more points. These attempts at institutionalized cheating by the ISU on behalf of Hanyu are disgusting.
@divinearia1601
@divinearia1601 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, I absolutely agree that harder jumps should earn more points. What would be the point of learning them and doing them if they're not worth it? I mean, there's a reason why nobody is bothering with the 4A(except Yuzuru, 'cos he loves any kind of attention he can get). Do we know for sure they'll do this? And would these rules only apply to quads but not other jumps like triples and doubles?
@L1623VP
@L1623VP 3 жыл бұрын
@@divinearia1601 Yes, the rule only applies to quads. As you said, what will happen is that skaters will stop trying to learn the harder quads because there won't be a reason to if they're all worth the same amount of points. They'll largely disappear from competition if they don't keep the incentive to do them (more points) in play. They're dumbing down figure skating to try and keep lesser technical skaters competitive, and that's more than wrong, it's unfair. Social engineering has to place in sports. It should be: let the best man win. The rule is already written up. All the ISU has to do is enact it. The last information I found out about it online was that the ISU issued a statement saying that the new rule has been "suspended", and they gave no reason why. Hopefully it's because outraged fans and important people within skating raised objections, but I can only hope. It would be awful for them to institute it at all but especially in this upcoming Olympic season. Such a drastic rule change alters the way skaters construct their programs, and even train. What's really appalling is that while they consistently DECREASED the base values of the hardest quads (mandatory points that judges MUST award skaters who complete those elements) they INCREASED the grade of execution points range (discretionary points judges MAY award a skater for elements) from +/- 3 to +/- 5. So in essence they're reducing the amount of points judges must award skaters and increasing the amount of points they "may" away skaters if they feel like it. They're making the technical side of skating FAR more subjective than when the code of points was originally instituted. Now, judges have far more influence in determining the technical score because the amount of points they MUST award are lower, while the amount they MAY award is higher. It's disgusting because they're penalizing technically gifted skaters and giving others an unfair advantage. This constant de-valuation of quad points also makes it more difficult to break world records that were set under the previous point structure just three years ago when quads were worth more. These ridiculous changes affect so many aspects of the sport.

I totally agree with your point about the scoring system...why to reduce the base values of quards...skaters must try harder to catch onto them but cannot agree that they are helping Hanyu by doing this because he can also jump the lutz and loop....but last two seasons he was very obviously underscored and now even high level skaters and even Brian has commented about the scores they are giving him...and spectators are no idiots they can identify the biased judging system or whatever as I guess ISU wants him to retire now...But I'm happy that he is competing in this age with nathan and is just behind him last 2 seasons. Nathan is to win these olympics but hanyu will give us a chance to enjoy a great race....I hope everything goes by fairy so that no further questions are raised
