Peter, i have the 7-14 2.8 pro. A while back i took a photo seminar with a pro photographer in the joshua tree national park in California. The weather was pretty bad but in moments of clearing as i learned you can get outstanding dramatic photos. I learned from this seminar. Thanks for the great videos!

Lucky us, that we have you going out in those circumstances and share your views ans impressions! I have this lens and am pretty lucky with it, still looking out for good locations for using it. Keep on doing your videos, great stuff, learning a lot from you.

I own this lens and think Peter did an excellent job highlighting the pros and cons. I do like the lens very much and find it very useful for isolating a foreground subject against an interesting background, or for portrait-format panorama stitch shots. The only thing I don't like about this lens is the bulbous front element which doesn't allow the use of a threaded protective filter or threaded polarizer. You have to be extremely careful not to scratch the front element; never put this lens in a bag or in storage without its lens cap on, the way you can with a lens with a protective filter on. I shudder to think what the repair bill would be to replace a scratched front element (or even replace its non-standard lens cap, if lost, once the lens is no longer made). To be honest I find myself going out more often with the M. Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO rather than this one, as that one is almost as wide but lighter-weight and more compact, more versatile also as a midrange zoom, still has great optics, and allows threaded filters; if I think I might need a polarizer, that's the lens I want. If I could only afford one of these two lenses, I'd personally rather have the 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO, which is also less expensive. But make no mistake, this 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO is a first-rate lens, and if you choose this one as your only wide-angle lens, you will not be disappointed. Its focusing speed, sharpness and weather-protection are top-notch, as Peter demonstrated.

I had the Olympus 7-14 F2.8 for several years. Recently I sold it and bought Panasonic 8-18 F2.8-4 instead for the following reasons. 1. Panasonic is almost 1/2 the wight VS the 7-14 so I can throw it in my bag without thinking to much on the weight and will I use it or not. 2. Now I can finally screw a simple graduated or ND filter. Before it was almost impossible. The 3rd party solutions were very expensive, bulky and hard to carry. 3. On 90% of the shoots with 7-14 I use the 7mm so for me shooting photos with both lenses is equivalent to shooting at F2.8 4. The overall size of the lens is smaller so it is easier to carry. So in my case I gave up a little extra quality of the Olympus lens for practicality and fun usability.
@mfreider3 жыл бұрын
I were about to write almost the same list and you already did it ;) Went for PanaLeica 8-18/2.8-4 and don’t have any regrets. I am using it with NiSi M75 filter holder which has 67mm thread as result no need for any step down adapters - perfect match!

I keep trying to persuade myself that I don't need this lens or the 8mm f1.8 or the 12mm f/2 but I'm nearly ready to cave in to temptation and give in to buying either this lens (I have the other two of the f/2.8 trinity) or the 8mm f/1.8 to complete my prime set. Decisions, decisions!
@Centauri273 жыл бұрын
I gave in a few years ago and picked up this lens (used) to complete my PRO f/2.8 trinity. It's about the same size as the 12-40, but noticeably heavier. The strange thing is, when I'm on vacation, this lens is indispensable for interiors like cathedrals. But at home, it just mostly sits in my camera bag. I'm looking forward to the 8-25 PRO, which will probably replace my 7-14. I also thought long and hard about the 12mm f/2, but I ended up ordering the Laowa 10mm f/2 instead. And I already own three different fisheyes, none of them the Olympus 8mm.

As I wrote yesterday, I was catched between buying this one and a fisheye with my birthday coupon. What was the final solution? I bought this one (because of higher discount in absolute numbers and usability is much greater, too) in a new discount action at the Olympus/OM-D Czecho/Slovak shop and at the end of the month I will use my birthday coupon with other gear, maybe that fisheye. In Friday I will have this one in my hands. And because wide end is my favourite, I am somewhat impatient :D (12 mm of my "old" 2,8/12-40 Pro is too narrow for me).

I use the 7-14 lens primarily for aurora images. There is a good 3d printed adapter for this lens to use lee ND filters with it. I got it through shapeways. According to the olympus lens roadmap they are going to release a 8-25 pro lens. Unfortunately to me, it is f4. It will probably be an awesome lens and i will consider it, but i wish it was f2.8. Then it would replace my 12-40 and 7-14. Look forward to your take on it when it comes out. Fun video by the way. I live at 64degrees north over the pole on the opposite side of the globe from finland. -10f this morning here. Bit colder than normal for april 6.

I think OMDS will be making a series of f4 lenses. The good thing about f4 lenses is that they are smaller. i am waiting for the 8-25 f4 lens. If the image quality is like it is with other M.Zuiko lenses it will very a good lens.

I really enjoyed the videography and the exploring, fun, elements! Well done and thank you! Oh, and I have this lens and it's one of my keepers for m4/3. My other keepers are the 12-60 Leica and the 40-150 pro Oly. Sharpest zooms I've used for m4/3... and I've tried many, although sadly not Oly 150-400 - yet. But I have to say, I also have a Canon R5 and various lenses, including the 100-500 and, well, you know, they're pretty good. In bright sunlight? M4/3 is fabulous and a joy to use, but in low light? Sorry, the R5 and associated L lenses wins.

I would have bought this lens if I could have used my filters! I use screwable as well as rectangular filters, but none of them are applicable. There is one rectangular filter system that can be adapted but not the version I have. And it is the wide angle range where I use such filters mostly. So I habe to stay with the formidable 9-18 mm lens!
@rogman273 жыл бұрын
All my lenses are Olympus except for my wide angle. I chose the Panasonic Leica 8-18 as it had a screw thread for filters. However, after three years I have rarely used it, as my 12-100 is so versatile.
@bradw70843 жыл бұрын
Interesting that the visionaries are all reviewing ultra wide angle lenses atm & OMDS have a deal on...just before they release a new one! Almost as if they want to shift old stock before it becomes less desirable (likely 9-18 in particular). 😉
@ForsgardPeter3 жыл бұрын
Most likely the 9-18 will be replaced when the 8-25 f4 comes out. When that is? I do not know. With this OMDS wants us to look at the wide angles.
