Great video again Jimmy. Re the outfit we were thinking “Rainbow” the kids program, shows our age 😀. I guess this lens was made to complement the 12-40 f2.8, but for me personally I think I would have preferred f4 to complement the 12-100. The problem with the Panasonic 8-16 is it zooms in a different direction to Olympus lenses. I did end up going with the Olympus 7-14 for handheld indoors, but the Panasonic 8-16 is very alluring at nearly half the weight and able to take light weight polarising filters to remove glare from objects.
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Haha, yeah, feeling the age for sure! I totally agree with the weight issue but then I also ended up using the Olympus due to the fact that I shoot indoor and low light a lot and 2.8 is much better than 4 in the end. Thanks for watching again!

great review - you state the min focus distance is 2cm, om website states 20cm (0.2m). Looking at the video it certainly looks closer to 2cm than 20! Can you confirm this? It makes this lens a very interesting proposition

Are you able to explain a little more or show a video of mounting filters to this lens along with cost? Love the lens but I think I will need filters for outdoor video. Because it looks like the filter would be mounted away from the lens, will that cause any issues or get in the way? Thanks and great video!!

I’m just curious if any of the photos shown here are actually sharp, as from the YT vantage point they all look smudgy and somewhat soft/blurry. Really interested in this lens though
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 4 жыл бұрын
It's sharp. You can't really tell lens quality from YT, compression is too high and sometimes depends on streaming speed. The best you should be viewing this is 4K.

Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 8-18mm f/2.8-4 Asph. is lighter 315g instead of 535g. It is also cheaper 1000$ instead of 1200$ and permits an 67mm filter. However the 1mm focal length difference between the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 8-18mm f/2.8-4 Asph. and the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO isn't negligible at all. The 7mm deliver 114° angle of view and the 8mm 107° angle of view.

Nice 😀one, been trying so many brands for years, Canon, Sony, Olympus...and for some reason turning back to Olympus for the size, portability and price. I just love the stability it has for run and gun video and photography. Lugging tripods gets super tedious at times. Thanks for all the great information you provide here. I am sending this message from Hiroshima, Japan. I used to use the Olympus E-M1 Mark II, but about a month ago I changed it to a new Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III. The lenses are OLYMPUS M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 300mm F4.0 IS PRO and OLYMPUS M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 45mm F1.8 [Black] I have an OLYMPUS M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm F1.8 [Black] and an OLYMPUS M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 25mm F1.2 PRO. I really like this camera because it looks really cool.

Hi Sean, it's same as all M43 compatible system. If no crop on video settings, 7-14mm is same across all M43 and equivalent to 14-28mm in full frame (35mm format)

Great video. I'm a bit of an overwhelmed idiot with all the technical stuff. Wondering if you could give me your opinion on which lens is best for what I'm looking for. I have an Olympus OMD EM10 and a few cheaper M.Zuiko lenses for it. But I am needing a wide-angle lens that will perform really well in low light situations such as clubs, weddings, parties etc. But also be a good all rounder for street photography etc as well. Would you say the 7-14mm f2.8 Pro is my best bet for this, or is there something else even better suited? Any recs appreciated!
@paulathomas4944
@paulathomas4944 5 жыл бұрын
Perhaps you should look at the 17mm f1.8? It's a great focal length for street photography and the wide aperture will help in low-light indoor situations.
@terrywbreedlove
@terrywbreedlove 6 жыл бұрын
I wish I had this focal length in a Pro version aperture F4. Keep it small and really well built with weather seals. Wide zooms don’t need a fast aperture for landscape and anything out doors. Focus and super sharp across the frame high quality images.oh and a filter ring
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, perhaps in the near future. Olympus do have a slower and more consumer-friendly version but not weather sealed, though it's tiny and many travellers use it. For landscape, I do agree, but for me, the 2.8 is valuable :)
@tobiasmoeckel
@tobiasmoeckel 6 жыл бұрын
I agree. I use my wide angle for landscapes as well, so speed is not that important. That's why I purchased the 8-18mm Pana Leica. Smaller, lighter, filter thread - perfect! And I even have an f/2.8 at the wide end (If I need f/2.8 for anything >11mm I use my f/2.8 standard zoom). Sure, you give up 1mm which makes quite the difference at an ultra wide angle, but 8mm are enough most of the time and given the pros, it is a trade off that is well worth it imho. Anyway, both are fantastic lenses!
@zardosspinosa6944
@zardosspinosa6944 5 жыл бұрын
I know its a good lens, but is it worthwhile sacrificing the loss of filters like a polariser or an 8 stop ND that can be easily attached to the 9-18, is the image quality that much better especially when it means actually getting the shot?
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 5 жыл бұрын
You can get filters for this lens, just need an adaptor. You can google it and you can buy it from Amazon I think. But that 2.8 really helps in low light and also astrophotography
@zardosspinosa6944
@zardosspinosa6944 5 жыл бұрын
@@Red35Photography Yes you are correct of course, I had a look, maybe not as simple as screwing on the filter. I can see the advantage of the 2.8 at times, indoors or enclosed market shots early morning, that said you are probably going to be using f4 for that depth of field and generally this lens would be used for outdoor landscape (altho there is a Japanese guy on Flickr who uses it as a portrait lens and takes stunning images) I do have the Samyang 12mm f2 and this morning went out and took some shots comparing with the 9-18 and apart from slightly different rendering not a whole lot of difference, the 9-18 was slightly softer at the edges but only seen on pixel peep. Of course the 9-18 feel a bit cheap and plasticy, but cannot justify the overall cost in the upgrade, with minimal improvement in image quality. Just a bit of gear envy I suppose.

Thanks Alex for watching! Haha, I actually did mention about flare originally but not included in the end. It does flare little but they are nice flare! I always talk about flares in my videos as I love them and adds a little bit of romance to my couple and wedding photos. However, it's flare resistance is in line with the very best out there. I actually deliberately shoot against the sun to get the flare :)

I was dreaming of this lens for a while, but when I got it, I felt quite disappointed. Distortion is huge. Quality wise, it looks like pictures were taken on a phone. I noticed that in your shots people were straight, how did that happen? I was taking some pictures and couldn't fix distortion afterwards.

If you use photoshop or lightroom. There is tools where it can help you align your distortion shots. But you can only do so much. I recommend using these type of lens for real estate or architectural uses rather than for a daily use. Great lens nonetheless.

I shoot the Nikon D850 with 14-24 f2.8 , the weight is not a problem, however on an Olympus EM5 M2 with 7-14 f/2.8 the weight goes to the front & feels ill suited, not so sure that I’d feel the same with the larger EM1 M2 grip. The alternative Panasonic 8-16 f/2.8-4 is so nice on a G9. Both a great lenses & very nice for some close up shots & many other situations too!
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's one of the things I highlighted was the weight of this lens. Even on the EM1 II, it's front heavy but I do like the performance of this and it's valuable at weddings and some documentary work depending on space. I also value more on the constant 2.8 and f/4 is too slow for my use, despite how much I appreciate the light weight of the PanaLeica lens.

what i really really dont like about this lens is that is has a bit of play with the mount .. so when zooming it feels cheap on my GH5... it feels like when i was using some cheap converter ring stuff for old M42 lenses with my first sony camera.. so honestly i might have been better off getting a Laowa 7,5mm f2.0 and a sigma 16mm f1.4 that would have cost about the same.

This or 8-18 2.8-4 for vídeo ?
@Red35Photography
@Red35Photography 6 жыл бұрын
Cheers Marcospiki for watching our video. Well, that depends on two things, do you use filters (ND) for video or the flexibility in low light. The former will point towards the panaleica lens, but for lowlight, you have the constant 2.8 to play with. For vlogging and general walk around, the panaleica is lighter too so another consideration.

Glad you notice that, no of course not, but those tables were very fragile and needed the management of the venue to move. At wedding, time is usually limited and you work with your surrounding, and with over 100 people for this shot, it's a time consuming affair. If you want to see my next shots, it's on my FB. Why do people take photos in 2018?
@rezatravilla2893
@rezatravilla2893 6 жыл бұрын
Three things that give impact to the image. The lens, the processor and the sensor. M43 is a brilliant system. Yes the sensor were small but it gives impact to the lens size. With the small glass amount, they can put top notch lens elements. That way it cuts the cost production and sells it cheaper. Plus m43 processor also great. Also for consideration, if a small sensor can fight the bigger sensor such APSC and FF, isn't it we called technology.
