Olympus E M10 Mark II in 2023

I’ve had my EM10 mk2 for four years and it never lets me down. The contrast detect autofocus isn’t state of the art, as you say, but I’ve found for my still photography needs of photographing family and friends it’s pretty great. I appreciate it’s accuracy. It’ll either miss focus completely or nail focus. There’s no in between. I’ve had cameras lie to me, say they locked focus then my photo comes out fuzzy. It was my first EVF camera, I was relieved that I wasn’t bothered not to be able to peer through an optical viewfinder. The frame rate and resolution really have crossed the threshold into “good enough” territory. The EM10 mk2 has a split personality if you buy the optional Olympus grip. It makes the camera much more reassuring to hold, but remove it and the EM10 is back to being a tiny little pocket rocket. Finally, a “non spec sheet” delight of the EM10 mk2 is the super grippy, fine machining on the control dials. The knurling has great “bite” so making adjustments requires very little finger pressure. So yeah, after using Nikons and Pentaxes I finally found my happy place.

I made a little grip extension out of a piece of Walnut, 3M 2 side tape to the camera. It made a huge difference gripping the little Oly without adding the bulky unit.

The EM10 Mk2 is my go to street camera & love the 45mm F1.8. Here in New Zealand I have noticed the price for it is increasing as people find out about it.

Just picked up a new, old stock Em10 mkii from Olympus. It had 64 shutter actuations and a minty, perfect body. Lovely little camera and a great second body to go with my Em1 mkii. Great video; thankyou.

Great review (as always). It's worth noting that the Olympus E-PL8 is pretty much the same as the E-M10 Mk2 in terms of features and internals, plus it has a screen that folds fully down (for vlogging / selfies). You can also plug the accessory EVF into the hot-shoe port, if you want a view finder. Again, the E-PL8 has weight to it that makes it feel like a really good quality piece of kit.

The Mk II is an awesome camera. I'll never give up any of my OM-D EM10 models. They're just the perfect, light, take with you cameras for everyday photography and b-roll. Only the E-M5 compares favorably, albeit at a higher price point.

Thanks for the video! I bought a Panasonic GX9 thinking It would be a better camera all around than the E M 10 II. Not so. It will be on it's way to MPB, and I'll keep my old E M 10 II. As the owner of an original OM-1and OM-2 film, I just like the way Oly feels in the hand. Don't get me wrong the GX9 is built like a tank too, it just can't compete with the low light 5 axis IBS, IQ in the Oly, IMHO.

Nice review. I love my EM10m2 too. The mark3 is crippled and the mark4 much more expensive as it has 20mpix. So that makes the mark2 the perfect carry everywhere camera, especially with tha Pa20mm

Got a fair deal of gear but, truth be told, the walk around thing is this little friend that never lets me down. Got the mythical 12/40 2.8 but it pairs awesome with the 12 2.0, especially if you wanna carry it anywhere you go without feeling you carry a burden. Also works great with the 25 1.8.

Another nice video. I have had a used EM10Mii for a couple of years and for 300 it came with the kit and a zoom lens. Quickly became my go to camera and complements my 2 GX85's, G7 and G95. About 6 months back I found an EM10MiiiS for even less so I added it to my EDC collection and is soooo much fun to use.

I've been considering getting either the olypus EM10iii or the Lumix GX85, which one would you recommend? I'm leaning towards the lumix because it seems to achieve better video/photo quality wise, but the olympus looks like it has better stabilisation, looks wise i prefer the m10 but size wise the gx85, overall I'm really torn between these two! Another option is the Olympus EPL9, I'm looking forward to your answer!

@@inbloom2300 I love both. Olympus has done IBIS longer, I have a very old EPL1 that has 3 axis IBIS. Both tilt screen, well built, gx85 little smaller and unlimited video record. Neither have mic jack. I love the retro style look of the em10. Both are awesome.

thanks for this video, got one question for you: Does this Olympus EM10 camera become warm after being turned on for a few minutes without shooting videos(just looking through menu or shoot pictures)? I live in a tropical place, previously owned a Fuji xt20, and as soon as I turned it on, within 2 minutes I could feel the warmth in hand, and totally turned off my passion for shooting. So this potential issue is my biggest concern, would like to hear your input, thanks a lot.

Thanks! I edit everything in a 4K timeline so all of that 1080p footage from the E-M10 Mark II gets up-res’d. I learned that back when I was filming everything with the Canon M6.

Great video! I got an E M10 Mark II myself some time ago. Now I'm trying around with it a bit but all my videos and pictures come out in pretty "poor" quality. I use the same lens but just the videos don't look anything like the video. I have no idea about cameras and am currently still reading up so my question is if there is a good beginner guide with video or explanation with which I can start well.

Why does people always talk negatively from the tilting waist level viewfinder screen? It is the second best screen hinge design, after the Fuji's X-T2 design, that adds a tilt to the right toward grip in 45 degree angle, so you can shoot vertically high and low properly. Every side articulating display is horrible by design. It has far more negative and compromising features for the general photography, that is > 90% of the time, than it has to offer that one of thousand benefits to be taking a selfie! If someone is serious about vlogging, then they should know that they need to put camera 4-5 meters from their face. At that moment you can't see a thing in that tiny 3" screen. And if you are smart one, you use wifi connection to your smartphone that allows you to have then all the video recording and exposure settings on your palm, when you are front of the camera. So you will see your position in frame, adjust the focus, set the exposure, start/stop the recording. Without ever walking to the camera, or trying to look tiny 3" screen past 2 meters, and be looking the side screen that distract viewer from eye contact. The tilting screen does exactly what the photographer requires, and wifi connection does everything that vlogger requires. And those who are for selfies by handhelding the camera at arms length? The whole purpose of the "selfie" is the unknown result from the photo by estimating the framing by lens direction, snapping the shot and then waiting film to develop to see the results what you got... Idea was never for seeing it before you take the shot and frame it perfectly, but the spontaneous and randomness in the result. That is even on smartphones the problem, don't use the frontal camera, use the rear camera. You don't see what the screen show, but you will get far better results when everyone look the camera, you have randomness in it and all. The side articulating screen is heritage from the late 90's when the LCD's were so bad that you didn't see proper exposure, you didn't see correctly it in sunlight, you needed to look it from proper angle, they were very vulnerable to damage as they were soft on surface, they were tiny 1", low resolution and you really couldn't do much with them than adjust settings. So Canon came up with the idea to protect the LCD when on the go, and adjust the tilt. Back then it was too expensive to have so nice hinges as tilting screens have today, so the hinges were huge plastic/metal ones with thick wires inside to get it working. It was better than fixed screen, but when tilting screen design came, it has been superior to that.

I had OMD EM 10 Mk 2 since my teenager years when I first got in to photography (you can see in my profile here), I bought it along with F1.8 35mm lens. I find that it is still good to this day for my usage. But I need to get it service for the Shutter and the leather cover is gone so I changed that (this cost 2,000 THB in Thailand) but aside from that I find it still very good. PS: I don't take photo as a professional, for a hobbist like me this is enough.

I've had for 3-4 years now. Only problem has been with kit lens occasionally not working with it. This a problem with lens not camera. Only other thing was dropped mine and battery cover broke but easy to buy and fit a new one via the Olympus/ om website. Am considering getting a pro lens to deal with the kit lens not working. Only problem is can't decide which one has price between f2.8 and f4 second hand not that great

There is a common problem on the tilt screen OMD models (EM10 and EM5] where a flex cable failure causes problems with the rear display, and occasionally switching to the viewfinder. The replacement cable is cheap, and there are numerous videos posted about the replacement process.

Is the OMD E-M1 II worth it in 2023? humm, let's flash back to 2016, i bought the camera for a backpacking trip based on all the good review, but it went back to the closets after the trip and hardly saw the light again. because after I reviewed the picture on my computer I realized I should have just carried my A7R II with a few Zeiss Loxia for the trip instead, HUGE HUGE difference in image quality. So my answer would be, no, not even back in 2016. I guess there is a reason why it was $650 brand new back then. It's kind of funny you mention no Mic input and no articulated screen so you can focus on photography, you made it sound like people with camera with those feature won't be able to focus on photography but busy taking selfie, i really find that pretty amazing comment to turn a shortcoming into a feature. since I don't have money to buy a sports car so I won't have to worry about getting speeding ticket, great !!! LOL.

I would say it's a good option for someone who wants to learn how to use a camera, how to expose, how to frame, even how to use ND filters. Plus, it's a mirrorless camera with pretty cheap lens options. At some point, if you are somewhat serious about photography, you'll want to move on from your phone.
