This is absolutely one of the better reviews I've seen of the new Olympus. It seemed balanced and fair. I was also pleased to see your Yukon footage. I've lived here for more than forty years, and it's nice to see others appreciating our wonderful country and light. As for the winter temps? Well, you were lucky. This has been one of the mildest winters I can remember, but the harsh climate is definitely one of the main reasons I've shot Olympus for so long. Their cameras have proven incredibly tough and reliable for me no matter the conditions, something I am not able to say about my experiences with some of their competitor's products. Anyway, nice review. Thanks, and consider me a new subscriber.

I liked it. I got to handle their M1 Mark II recently in an Orlando FL camera store. I was really impressed with holding the Mark II with an 800 effective zoom and a 600 effective prime. I found myself talking to my son and the store rep while holding the camera with my right hand, while making a lot of expressive arm movements, for quite a bit of time (probably 30 minutes cumulative) and forgetting about the camera. The 300mm prime Pro is f4.

I would have liked to see a higher resolution EVF as well and they could have increased the size of the rear LCD, since there is so much space left. I personally would not mind a 4" display. I am wondering, what the 150-400mm lens will cost, when it is released next year... Thanks for the early review guys!

Great balanced review. I've seen a few other reviews now that been "too enthusiastic" or more commonly, overly critical of the shortcomings. I've shot all three major systems (Nikon FX, Fuji X, and Olympus/Panasonic m4/3) extensively, and have shot high level collegiate sports extensively. Yes, DoF is nice; yes more bokeh for isolation is nice; but they aren't everything. m4/3 has its place. It does seem to be a drawback, however, that the EVF is not quite up to par (many reviewers have commented on this) and low light performance does lack a bit for m4/3.

@R Rivera ...Yes but with a focal reducer (speed booster)you are giving your lens one extra step of light which means that a 2.0 is now a1.0..The focal amount of the lens..say a 55mm turns into more of an 85mm full frame equivalent like an APS-C...This vastly changes the equation and the lens is usually a little sharper too.

The more I shoot and the further we get into better tech, the more I REALLY don't care about a blown out background or high ISO performance. Just take good images, be a photographer or videographer. Get the good light, nail that action shot because its easier then it ever has to get great images. Complaining about the evf being low res is fine, but its not like it's impossible to get good images.

Decent review, showing pros and cons of this camera in a cleaner and less biased way that most of the other channels out there. I can't understand why they didn't looked for a better sensor, since 3 years would have allowed them to develop something new for sure. This cripples it a s a sport camera, where ISO sensitivity can make the difference in poor lighting; I also find unacceptable they just thrown in the old EM5MkII viewfinder just increasing magnification when out there there are a lot of better ones (Panasonic G9). This camera does a lot more things then the EM1MkII, but, as far as taking pictures, does not improve over an almost three years old camera significantly. I'm stuck with my EM5MkII, which is 5 years old and it's a bit slow. Video option is also nothing to write home compared to Fuji, Sony and Panasonic.Since putting it side by side with my Panasonic Gx9 didn't showed a marked quality improvement (except for 20Mp vs 16Mp) and if possible a very slight decrease of quality at high ISO, I'm now wonder if Tony Northrup wasn't actually right about M43 being "dead", or rather having reached it's development limits and it is time to switch to Fuji...

To me, I think that the most "honest" people are the ones who get an all-expense paid trip somewhere and still criticize a camera in the places where it needs criticizing. And some other reviews I have seen have done that. It is the easiest thing in the world to slather praise on a camera if a company paid to send you somewhere. That said, I'm not saying that this review was bad for not hating on the camera more, and they did go over some downsides. But the truth is that if someone spends thousands of dollars on something, they might want some videos that really highlight the downsides so they will know exactly what they are getting into before they lay out that much money on it.

It hurts to see how far m43 has fallen. I switched from m43 to Fuji a year ago and I still have a soft spot for Olympus and Panasonic. Not many people, if any, is going to buy this camera not because it's a bad camera, it's exactly the kind of camera Olympus should've released a few years ago and even then 3K price could be a stretch. Sad. In order for small sensor cameras to stay competitive requires a lot more imagination, if Olympus didn't force the vertical grip and instead used a round sensor for maximum utilisation of the 4/3 image circle. that could be a real innovation, one that can compete with APS-C or even attract FF users. Small sensor cameras shouldn't pretend to be large.

@@stevey500 The point of the Olympus system...minus this...is that your kit will weigh less. But if you care about weight, the body should matter as well, and this one weighs more than a Nikon D850. So I understand going small, with an E-M5 or PEN, and I understand going big, like a D850 with large lenses. But to save on lenses only to have a big body doesn't make that much sense. Nice review, however the built in vertical grip is a killer for the camera. It makes the camera bulky, too big too heavy and adds unnecessary cost ??? I love the MFT format just because the cameras are smaller, lighter and price is reasonable. I have the E-M1m2 and love that camera and also do 2 sec. exposures from my hand and no support. I too have the 50MPX mode but for my landscape photography it is practically useless, majority of my images are with longer shutter speeds 0.5s to several minutes and the 50MPX mode can't handle that. It would be better to have 30MPX sensor instead and not to fiddle with the pseudo 50MPX mode . The 20 MPX sensor is outdated anyway. High ISO is not a problem for me, the highest I go is about 800. Well this body is about 1 Kg and this is too much , I just got the PEN -F and is only 380g with the same sensor, IBIS and 50MPX and it cost $999 I think you had a good summary of the camera and we will see how popular it will get, my feel is that soon the price will slide down rapidly because you can get smaller , lighter and cheaper FF cameras.

It's a shame to always here people complain about things that will not change when shooting with M43. These are not limitation this is a M43 and if you were e pecking something different you are dumber than I thought. When somebody makes the change to M43 there is a reason. Personally for me it was size. I've owned other cameras and having to lug around a hug telephoto lens was a total turn off. Secondly I very rarely crop my photographs so my image always stay sharp and clean. Lastly, it seems only KZbinrs magnify the image to a point that most normal people never do. I got to use the OM-D E-M1X @mikescamer in Sac this weekend and the camera was absolutely awesome. I was blown away at what it could do and what I could in that short bit of time. If you don't like M43 then this camera is not for you or any M43. Remember a camera will not make you a better photographer. Look. Even if they've done a considerably bad job at targeting their demographic with their asking price, you have to at least see who they're targetting or your argument falls apart real quick. If MFT enthusiasts and the like are going to consider this camera, the asking price may seem very expensive. But they are targeting this camera towards action and wildlife shooters, who rely on their Canon 1DX II's or their Nikon D5's or their Sony RX10 or A99 (or wtf/e). How much are they? 1DX II ~6000 USD; D5 ~6500 USD, I hope you get the idea. Seeing as though you're the 655th cameraman to ever exist, they do have video features like OM-Log400 and DCI 4K (i personally can't wait for the trickle-down), but seeing as though the 1DX II *also* has those features or potentially more, Olympus *had* to offer something like it if they're competing with the Canons and the Nikons. And the EM1X seems like a steal to me on the basis of price.

Small lenses, lower weight. Really, really important to people who spend their lives lugging camera equipment around. I used to lug three bags to motorsports events. First was a basic bag with two Canon bodies and short lenses up to a 70-200. Second bag was a 300mm f:2.8 and the third was a 500mm f:4. All in all, that was more than 20 kilos of equipment and really awkward to carry (forgot about the monopod). With this I could carry two bodies (I don't have an E-M1x) and four lenses in one bag and it wouldn't be more than ten kilos. In fact, it would be less... in a single bag. Anyway, it's not actually that big when you see it next to a D5 or a 1Dx and it's about 30% cheaper. For sports/action/wildlife it makes total sense. New photographers would love it too.

This $3k camera is not overkill. It is stupid kill. At its core OM cameras are MFT meaning it has a tiny sensor. Olympus plumped this camera up to appeal to its loyal base. It is like Ford putting a V8 engine into an old Pinto and selling it for $40k. Why bother?

Not sure what Olympus was thinking when they came up with this camera.

I agree that there are challenges with Micro 4/3. But, they have done a very good job overcoming many of them in this camera and it gives options that other formats simply don't have, especially in regards to stabilization and utilizing compact telephoto lenses. If you don't like travelling with a tripod 7.5 stops of dual IS is very handy. And, being able to get a medium format sized file of a landscape or something static handheld could make this a good option for some people. Is this camera for everyone, definitely not. But, I don't think it's a joke at all. Having options is a good thing. :)

Looks like a great camera, for $1000..period...Whatever they drink or smoke at Olympus is some incredible stuff,or they just made up some random price.Seriously, you can,as someone said, get the Nikon D500 and glass..Nikon D810 used,D500 body together for a bit more,,Almost a D850 body....with another $1500,get a medium format Fuji GFX50R or a Sony A9,,Get the Sony A7iii and glass...Canon EOS R..Nikon Z6 and glass....I would never suggest to anyone what to do with their money, yet I am SURE they will nOT sell out their stock, and the price will severely drop by the spring.Expect firmware updates by next month, and the price at $1200 by June...$3000 for a micro 4/3 remake??

This camera is not meeting what it is designed for. I shoot sports and it’s a constant struggle with poor lighting indoors and outdoors. Most high school college games are scheduled in the evening and the poor high iso is the problem. This camera is DOA for me bc of that reason. I hope you guys went in deeper with the af performance. I know you guys are reviewing for a camera store and it’s looking more like it. I think you guys really have to deal with the negatives to be a review channel. Love your work but please review for us, not the manufacturers.

I've watched other reviews which went more into low light performance on this camera. Noise is what it is, m43 has never done great there, but auto focus was working really well even in very poor light, so it's not a total loss.

Do you really understand what´s the benefit of this system? I am not sure. Do you are a professional shooter? No, i can´t imagine. With this camera you get the shot. Under nearly every condition. And without light you don't impressive anybody with your fotos. With the M1 you can pre capture 0,5 sec. or 38 pictures. You can carry the system, esp. up to 600 or 800 mm. You have enough batterie and weather sealing and it works at low temperature. Little bit more DoF is nice`somtimes, more bokeh too, but when you don´t have your camera working or you are too late with pressing the button? Or your personal condition is limited?

For a 1000USD less, Id buy it ... even if it's m4/3 ...impressive, but too expensive ...

Sounds like an paid sponsorship rather than a proper review. You also throw in an ad for an airline. God I am sick of the unregulated bullshit wrapped up as a review.

For the money that thing costs I'd like to see a full frame sensor in a smaller body. And I still wouldn't buy it. I already have a Sony A7. And I paid less than a thousand euros for it, used.

EVF- still years ahead Canon 1dx ii and 1DC (i have it). Because it has focus peaking.

only the grip good about it, and better focus and IS improved as well, but overall, not worth.... i still want a em1 mk 2 but only have money for em10 mk3 so im gonna get the second one, i cant see this new one much better in video recording, not at all..

Probably because this camera isn't geared toward video capture at all. The large body cameras like these usually aren't the camera that film guys are looking to attach to their rigs. So, wait for the Em1_II successor for features like that.

Seems like it would be a serious product photography camera. If it's big numbers you want to see, think about the pay checks you could get using this for such things.

These sponsored photographers will trick people to buy this camera. Small sensor, high price tag, nothing is better than the A7iii which is better in every way.

People can and will make up their own minds based on the pros and cons of anything that is reviewed. Yes, we had help getting up to the North with some sponsors from the Yukon. But, that does not impact our impressions of a camera.
